Chapter two

Anna walked around the mansion, the house was beautiful no doubt, but it was filled with so many hurtful memories. She felt a nudge at her feet and looked down to see Mickey, her dog. The only kind thing Kelvin ever did for her was to buy Mickey, and it was after she complained severely of being lonely being indoors all the time. In his words “Here’s a dog for you to keep you busy, better make sure he doesn’t mess up my house or else I will kill him” She remembered carrying Mickey for the first time, and he couldn’t stop wiggling his tail out of excitement. Mickey was a brown and black German shepherd dog, he was always by her side all day before and after she had her son, Mickey was her best friend who always tried to fight off Kelvin whenever he pounced on her. She felt bad about leaving him behind, but she knew she wouldn’t be able to take care of a baby and a dog alone without a job, the only money she had was the one she stole from her husband’s wardrobe when he traveled. Anna ran calling Mickey to chase after her, which he did excitedly, he was barking and wiggling his tail as he chased after his owner.

“Lunch is ready ma’am,” the kitchen assistant told Anna. Anna thanked her and went inside to have her lunch with Mario who was always by his father’s side even though he scared him, he never let Mario out of his side, he was trying to make up for the lost times. She excused herself after lunch and walked away leaving Kelvin and Mario who were still eating their lunch. Anna went to her favorite part of the house, the only place with no bad memories for her, the pool. This was where she came to clear her mind when she needed to get away from Kelvin, she took off her slippers and clothes, leaving just her bikini on. She jumped into the pool, not caring about anything else aside from the feeling of the water on her skin this hot afternoon. She swam for about an hour before sitting down on the side of the pool with her eyes closed and her legs wiggling inside the pool.

She opened her eyes when she heard footsteps coming towards her, she turned around to see Kelvin, and she jumped up and grabbed her clothes. “Go get dressed we have somewhere to go in the twenty minutes,” Kelvin said in a calm yet commanding voice. She nodded her head and quickly put on her dress before going into the house. She quickly had her bath and hurriedly got dressed without applying makeup on her face, she was naturally beautiful with smooth oily skin. She brushed out her hair and let it fall on her shoulders. Kelvin was already waiting for her in the car outside the mansion, as soon as he saw her he came down to open the car door for her, Anna rolled her eyes, pushed the door back to close it, and then opened it herself. Kelvin stood staring at her with a smirk on his face as he went back into the car and started it.

The drive to town was quiet, Anna’s eyes were glued to her new phone watching videos online until she felt the car stop, she looked up and saw that they were in front of a hospital, she looked at Kelvin who had a smile on his face. “Let’s go in and you will find out why we are here,” he said. She got out of the car and followed him, she didn’t want any trouble, she promised herself to be of good behavior until she was able to escape this time with all her documents, passport, and also enough money so she could run to a faraway country. They were directed to the lab where Anna’s blood was taken, she was handed a pee sample cup for her to pee in, and she was directed to the restroom. Anna never said a word, she did as she was told without any complaints and without asking any questions. She knew what they were here for, Kelvin wanted her to be tested to know if she was pregnant or had any type of infection before he went intimate with her. He was always so careful about his health because his father died of AIDS which was passed to him by his concubine two years after he lost his wife, Kelvin’s mother to cancer. Anna dreaded s*x with him and she knew she wouldn’t be able to escape it but this time she was going to take charge of it, no more painful s*x, it was either her way or no s*x at all.

“Mommy, mommy,” Mario screamed as he ran to hug her, she carried him and planted kisses on his face while he giggled. She rarely spent time with him since they came back a week ago, Kelvin made sure he was always with him so he would get used to being around him and not see him like a stranger anymore. “Mommy I’m hungry.” Anna carried him to the kitchen to prepare his favorite cereal for him, she sat beside him to watch him eat.

Flashback

“Be gentle,” Anna cried out in pain as Kelvin pushed her against the kitchen table, he cleared the table by pushing away the plates, cups, and flower vase that were on top of it on the floor. He forcefully carried her up, tore her gown, spread her legs apart, and quickly took off his trousers. “Call my name baby,” he whispered to her ear. Kelvin slid in and out of her with full force, he thrust in and out of her nonstop for straight ten minutes while Anna cried and pleaded for him to stop. “Clean this place up, I don’t want the maids to know we made love in the kitchen.” He put on his trousers and walked out of the kitchen, leaving her alone to clean up all the mess he made. Anna fell as she tried to stand up, her legs were weak and she had bruises on her intimate area, she cried in pain as she cleaned the kitchen.

“Mommy I’m done eating,” Mario said while tapping his mom who was lost in thoughts, she snapped back to reality. Mario wiped off her tears with his napkin. “Please don’t cry Mommy, did I make you cry? I’m sorry mummy.” Anna carried him with one hand and put the plate in the kitchen sink with the other. Every part of the house except the pool triggered a sad memory for her, she needed to leave there for her mental health. She wished she was back in Cancun, even though she lived in a small village she loved it there, the people were nice and welcoming, and she peace there for the two years she spent. She worked in a manufacturing company there, the company had a free daycare for their staff's children for free, it was easy to check on Mario when she was working so she didn't have to pay a babysitter to look after Mario while she was at work. She missed the town and all of her friends so much.

It had been raining for hours, the wind blew against the windows all over the house like they were going to shatter at any moment. The electricity was cut off due to the wind, and the emergency solar lights were quickly turned on by the gardener. Anna watched Mario hide under her blanket, he held her leg with both hands while he tried to sleep, Mario has always been scared of rainy and windy nights since he was born. Anna loved rainy nights, she usually enjoyed reading at night, the sound of the wind on the windows added a dramatic vibe to the atmosphere when she read a scary novel at night. She picked up her phone beside her bed to look at the time, it was nine-fifteen p.m. She slowly pulled herself to reach the shelf beside her bed trying not to wake Mario who snuggled up her leg tight, she brought out her scary novel from her shelf and turned on the night lamp on top of the shelf. She was lost in her novel when she heard a knock on the door, she chose to ignore it wishing the person would go away thinking she was asleep, but she was wrong, the door opened and Kelvin walked into the room. Anna took the blanket down to show him Mario was on the bed sleeping beside her, he understood what she meant but he wasn't here for that, he only came to check on Mario since he wasn't in his room after he tucked him for the night. He handed Anna her test results and left, Anna opened the envelope and brought out her test results, and a piece of paper fell on her lap with a written note. “I know I hurt you in the past and also when I hit you the other day, your running away with our son was an eye-opener for me. I want us to try again this time I promise to be better and do better with you holding my hand every step of the way” Anna hissed when she read the note, she knew he didn't mean them, it was just a way to make her believe he would change so she could stop all her plans of escaping, she tore the note and the test results to pieces and put them inside her shelf so she could throw them away the next morning, she went back to reading her book before sleeping off.
