Chapter three

“Good morning sunshine,” Kelvin said as soon as he walked into Anna's room holding a tray of food, he had a smile on his face as he dropped the tray on top of the table in her room. Anna stared at him as he removed the blanket from the bed, this woke Mario up, and he greeted his parents as Anna always taught him to greet every morning when he woke up. Kelvin put the tray on the bed and ordered them to eat, they all dug in to enjoy their English breakfast of bacon, eggs, sausage, black pudding, baked beans, grilled tomato, and fried bread. Anna and Kelvin were alone in her room when Mario was out playing in the garden with the gardener and his nanny, Sophia. Mario had a likeness for plants and flowers, he was always excited when he was in the garden. Anna hated how clingy Kelvin had been the last three days, whenever he was home he would be by her side following her everywhere she went inside the mansion, she had no private time alone and she hated it with passion but she didn't know how to tell him without sounding rude. Kelvin tried bringing up small talk to break the awkward silence between them because he wanted them to bond but Anna wasn't paying attention to him. He knew he didn't treat her right and he promised himself when he found them he was going to be a changed man but his temper failed him again, he knew he had to see a therapist to help him manage his temper, he wanted to be a good husband and a good father this time. The housekeeper returned from her break, and when she heard Anna was back she rushed to her room to see if it was true. “I can’t believe you are back,” she screamed out loud as she ran to hug Anna who was looking out the window, as Anna heard Camilla’s voice she turned around, and they both hugged each other with tears rolling down their cheeks. Camilla was fifty-eight old and had been the family housekeeper before Kelvin was born. “I thought you had escaped for good, how the hell did he find you, my dear child.” Anna had a mother-and-daughter kind of relationship with Camilla, she was the only one who made staying here bearable for her, she was the one who advised her and encouraged her to find a way to escape whenever the opportunity came. Anna thought Kelvin had sacked her, she didn't ask about her because she did not want to raise any suspicion that she was in on her plan to escape. Anna explained how she was found and forcefully brought back to Mexico against her will. “Where have you been? I thought maybe he sacked you or something,” Anna asked. Camilla shook her head and hugged Anna again. “Where is Mario my boy?” she asked with excitement. “Kelvin took him shopping, he's trying to buy him with money, trying to make up for the two years he lost,” she rolled her eyes. She told Camilla how great her life was in Cancun, how the town was, and how she struggled alone with Mario before she was able to get a job through a friendly neighbor. They spent the whole afternoon filling each other in about what happened in the last two years. “You have a visitor waiting for you outside,” Kelvin announced to Anna. Anna wondered who was looking for her at this time of the day, she didn't have any friends here anymore and she didn't inform anyone she was back in town for them to come looking for her. As soon as she stepped outside the mansion she saw Lucia, she turned around to walk back inside. “Please I need to talk to you, please,” she cried out. Lucia was the last person she wanted to see, she was one of the reasons she ran away from Mexico to start a new life elsewhere, a life without betrayal. She turned around and walked close to her old friend-turned-enemy. “I am sorry Anna, I am sorry for everything I did to you in the past.” she knelt crying. Anna rolled her eyes, she was not ready to have this conversation. “What the hell are you sorry for? Because I lost count of the endless things you did to me,” Anna screamed out in anger. “I am sorry for having an affair with your husband, I am sorry for poisoning your drink when you were pregnant out of jealousy, I am sorry for telling your husband about every plan you made, I am sorry for everything. My life has been a mess since I stopped being your friend, I let jealousy and anger get the best of me,” she said. Memories of how Anna almost lost her baby came flooding her mind. Flashback Anna and Lucia were sitting down in the sitting room catching up while drinking juice, Anna needed to pee so she excused herself leaving her drink on the table. She was just six months pregnant then and she was peeing a lot, she came back to meet Lucia eating cookies that were served to her by the housekeeper and she joined her to eat, when she sipped her juice it tasted a tad different but she waved the feeling off blaming her pregnancy hormones. It wasn't up to ten minutes Lucia received a call that she needed to deliver something to a customer, she excused herself and left. An hour later Anna was rushed to the hospital bleeding, the doctors were able to stop the bleeding before any damage was done. When the doctor told her she was poisoned and she was lucky that she and her baby survived Anna was surprised, she didn't know anyone who would want to kill her when she didn't do anything wrong. Kelvin called for his domestic staff at the mansion to all be interrogated, and they all confessed to being innocent. The police who were in charge of the case requested for them to watch the CCTV footage of the mansion before they made any arrest, Lucia was seen in the video footage pouring a liquid into Anna’s drink. The police called for the arrest of Lucia, she went on the run sending threatening messages to Anna and pictures of her and Kelvin together in different hotel rooms, she also told her she was the one who exposed all her plans to her husband, Anna was heartbroken by the betrayal. The case was dismissed by her husband without her knowledge, she found out when she called the head of police who was in charge of the case for feedback when she didn't hear from them for two weeks, Anna was shocked out of her mind that he let her go scot-free with all charges dropped. When she confronted Kelvin he beat her up and locked her inside her room for three days, he directed the housekeeper to open the door only when she was going to give her food and water. “Please forgive me, my old friend, I know it's of no importance but I just want to let you know I didn't make the first move, your husband did. I am so so sorry, I wish I could take back the time and do things differently” Lucia begged. She used her knees to walk to Anna, she held the tip of her gown. Anna pushed her hands away, she didn't have anything else to say to Lucia, so she went back into the house and ran to her room crying. Talking to Lucia brought back all the memories she had tried to bury for over two years. Kelvin went out to meet Lucia, he helped her stand up and cleaned her tears. “I hope you didn't tell her what would upset her, I invited you here so you could apologize to her and not to f*****g make her cry,” Kelvin screamed at her while pulling her hair, he dragged her to the parking lot. He looked around to see if anyone was outside, it was nine p.m. already and everywhere was dark, now that he was sure they were alone he gently fondled her breast. “I will surely come back for you, I just need to settle with my wife, give me a little time to put everything back in order here and I will come for you, my love.” Lucia hissed, she loved him and hated him at the same time, she couldn't get enough of him, and even when she tried to run away from him she found herself going back to him. She hated that he had her wrapped around his fingers but still, he couldn't let go of Anna who never wanted him from day one. He kissed her goodbye and ordered her to leave, he didn't go back inside until he saw her walk through the gate and heard the sound of the gate being locked after her. Kelvin didn't want to be like his dad but he found himself being more and more like him every day, he was stuck between wanting to be better today and getting worse the next day. He was doing the same thing his dad did to his mom to Anna, he didn't have a good childhood memory and he didn't want that for Mario. He knew he needed therapy to move past his childhood trauma for him to be a good husband and a good father. He sat down on the balcony, which was his favorite part of the house, this was where he would hide whenever he wanted to be alone as a child. Flashback to his childhood came rushing. Flashback ◦ "Go to your room you little rascal, this will be the last time I will ever remind you never to barge into my room whenever I and your mother are having a conversation," Kelvin's dad screamed at him every time he wanted to beat up his mother. He would run out of the room to peep through the keyhole, he would watch his dad beat up his mom mercilessly. She never made a sound so no one would hear what was happening to her, the next minute she would be outside with a smile on her face going on about her day like nothing happened. He grew up hating his dad, he was ten years old when he tried to kill his dad but he was caught and sent to a rehabilitation center abroad where he spent five years. He came back home when he was fifteen years old because it was part of his mom’s dying wish to see him, she was sick with cancer and had a few months left to live. He blamed his dad for his mom's sickness and hated him more for not signing his release form earlier so he could be with his mom and help take care of her. He only had memories of his father being abusive to his mom, his hatred grew more when he lost his mom. He turned rebellious and joined a gang right after. The sound of his phone ringing brought him back to reality, he brought out the phone from his pocket, it was a call from Lucia to tell him she was pregnant. He hung up the call angrily and left the house in search of her. When he got to Lucia’s house she wasn't home, he called her several times but she never answered. He was about to leave when he got a text. “I'm at our usual spot” with her picture attached to it, she was in his hotel room, and she had her key because it was where they usually met, he never for one day took her home. He angrily drove to the hotel, he stopped at the hospital on his way to get abortion medicine from his doctor friend. When he got to the hotel he ordered dinner and wine for two. Lucia stood up smiling when she heard the door opening, she was expecting a hug and a kiss from Kelvin. “Tell me you were joking when you told me you were pregnant,” Kelvin said as soon as he opened the door. Lucia’s smile disappeared seeing that she got the opposite reaction from what she was expecting, she was surprised, she knew Kelvin wanted more kids because he had confessed to her that he wanted three kids or more if possible, he didn’t want his children to experience the loneliness he did growing up as an only child. “I found out this morning, I thought you would be happy my love,” Lucia said. She was crying at this point, she knew he wasn’t someone to be toyed with, and from his reaction, he wasn’t pleased with the news. He moved closer to her while she slowly moved backward around the room, she was scared of the evil look he had on his face, she knew it was going to end up badly for her. They heard a knock, it was from room service. “You can come in,” Kelvin called out. The room service greeted and dropped the food on the table before excusing herself out of the room. “Let’s eat, you know I like my food hot.” Lucia joined him at the dining table, they both ate and drank together without saying a word. “You know you are not keeping that baby right? I want to fix things with my wife not break it fully by getting her best friend pregnant. It’s time for you to finally move out of Mexico as you’ve always wanted.” Lucia knelt crying. “I thought you wanted more kids, or you don’t just want from me?” she asked. Kelvin nodded his head with a wicked smile, he knew it was time to let her go, it was fun while it lasted. “Now drink this,” he handed her the drugs.
