It's Saturday, the day of the dance.
I am excited even though I did not consider going until two days ago.
"Morning gorgeous", Jenna greets with a still sleepy smile.
"I am so happy you are here!" I say in a whispered scream, hugging her close.
I just lay still, holding on to her for a little bit.
"Want to go for a run?" I say jumping up in bed. "Yes, ready in two!" she meets my enthusiasm, like we are some sort of extension of ourselves.
After getting dressed, we race down to the kitchen like we used to do when we were kids.
Mom is already awake and having coffee. "Hi mama, love you, bye mama" I shout as we pass her, still running to the back door laughing.
We choose to take a trail into the woods that leads to the hot springs. After 40 minutes, we get to the pools. It's beautiful here. The steam hangs like a soft cloud over the pools. It's peaceful and quiet, with only the light breeze whistling softly through the trees.
We did not plan to take this route, so we are not dressed for swimming. "There's no one here," we say together.
Laughing quietly, we both start getting undressed, keeping our eyes looking around for unwanted company. Being as quiet as possible.
Our heads snap, looking at each other, then into the woods, when we hear the rustling of leaves nearby. With soft giggles we quickly get into the pool, still looking for whatever made the sound.
"There look, it's just a little deer." she says in a whisper.
We both stand in the water quietly just taking in our surroundings and feeling the warmth of the pools. It's like taking a warm bath after a long day. How fun is it to still be so very childish sometimes.
"So you and Marcus..." she starts. I just look at her still pushing my arms through the warm water.
"He is quite concerned about you, huh?"
"Yeah, I guess he is."
"Still think that you two might be destined... what if it does not work out like that?"
"I don't know. We'll just take it for what it is then." I say, shrugging my shoulders.
"I mean, it would suck. Really suck."
I pause.
"Since Marcus turned 18. And he did not find his mate soon after," I gestured, waving my hands in a circle. "... the idea that we might be destined has been a thing for so long, that it might be hard to accept, "
"for both of us. And our families."
I haven't really thought of this since just now. I guess I am also very content with the idea.
"It will suck." I say again.
"You like him a lot," Jenna says with a soft smile. I nod my head slightly.
"Yeah, " my smile getting bigger as I linger on the idea. "It's easy." And silence falls over us again.
"So have you done any stuff yet?" Jenna interrupts my sweet moment.
"Jen!" I say, with a big gasp, splashing her with water.
"I mean, he is really... into you... and older, the guy must have needs for... stuff." she gestures.
"No..." I roll my eyes at her.
"He keeps himself busy... with..." I sigh.
"He has enough girls falling over him to keep him busy with... stuff."
"I knew he was a little man-whore." she says squinting. We both laugh out loud at her accurate assumption.
"Does it bother you?" she asks, still giggling.
"No... I don't know. He has never given a girl any real attention when I'm around."
"He keeps the PDA to a minimum."
Just then I hear the breakfast call at the pack house and welcome the opportunity to not have to continue with this conversation.
"Let’s go get some breakfast. I'm starving." I say, gladly cutting the conversation short. Jenna just looks at me with her left eyebrow raised. "You're always starving cuz."
On our run back my mind keeps going back to what Jen asked. Does it bother me that he is with other girls?
I really don't know. A little? Maybe.
When we arrive at the pack house the delicious smell of food knocks the thoughts of him right out of my mind.
"Oh my goodness, breakfast looks amazing!" Jen says as we walk into the kitchen.
"Good morning dears." Luna greets. "You look fresh and relaxed. Did you visit to the pools?"
How does she do that? I wonder. Does she follow me? Have spies? Surely not. I smile and shake my head to let go of the thought.
"Morning Luna." Jen and I say in unison.
"Thanks for having me." she continues.
"Always a pleasure, dear."
I pack my plate to the brim. "For a tiny girl, you sure have an appetite." Jen scoffs.
"I'm still a growing pup." I say making my best puppy eye face.
The room is filled with morning conversation. Everyone enjoying each other's company.
I notice that there is no sign of Marcus or Daniel this morning. Again.
Jen excuses herself from the table after eating. "I have a quick call to make home. I left my phone in your room. See you there when you're done?"
"Yep." I say, taking bite.
After breakfast, I walk back home. At the top of the hill I hear the loud thundering of vehicles approaching. I stop and turn to look down at the pack house parking bays.
Two black Jeeps stop. One belongs to Marcus.
I freeze looking at the scene unfolding below. My dad and Alpha gets out of the one Jeep followed by two pack warriors.
The one walks around to the back. Opening the back door he flings a body over his shoulder. It's white colourless hair and almost see through skin reflects like a bright light in the sun. Vampire.
Marcus and Daniel get out of his car. They both seem to be covered in dirt.
Marcus walks to the back of his car, just like the warrior did, but he stops suddenly. He looks up. Straight at me. He rakes his hand through his hair. Then looks down again before gesturing to Daniel to help him. Daniel opens the back of the Jeep and they each take out a body and flings it like a bag of potatoes over their shoulders.
They walk to the dungeon entrance. The dungeons are underground. Under the pack house.
They are still... alive?
When did this happen?
I remember now that my dad was not in the kitchen with my mom having coffee as they always do when we ran out this morning. This must have happened during the night.
Why would they keep them alive though?
I wonder if I should go down there, since the previous attack had something to do with me.
I stand for a while hesitantly. Jenna is probably wondering where I am.
I decide I'll give my dad a call when I am at the house and turn to walk home.
"Jenna!" I call as I walk into the house.
"Upstairs babe!" she yells back.
When I get upstairs, I see my bed packed with all sorts of pampering goods.
"Surprise!" Jen yells. "Ready for your facial madame?" she says, gesturing like a servant.
I step forward with a smile, ready to accept whatever she has planned.
