“This is outrageous, how could he treat you like this?” “I don’t know, Diane. I’m so confused right now,” Tasha responded, running her hands over her hair. “Don’t worry if Derek doesn’t want you, I am here for you, Tasha.” Tasha smiled, acknowledging her kindness. “What are you planning to do next? I can help you secure a job at the company.” “Thank you Diane but the divorce is a secret, I don’t want anyone to know about it till I’m gone.” Diane tilted her head quizzically. “Gone? What do you mean?” “I want to relocate, Diane. I want to start a new life, anywhere far from here.” “I studied Graphic Design in college and although I have been with Derek for three years. I planned to use this money to get more degrees and a job even.” Although she had enough money, she didn’t want to start overspending the money. Derek had transferred into her bank account that morning without knowing what the future had in store for her. Hence, she had visited Diane before leaving the city. The previous night, she had stormed out of Derek’s bedroom to sleep in the living room, hoping by morning he’d be back to his senses or it’d be a bad dream and she’d be up and awake to reality. But those hopes had quickly been destroyed when the beep of her phone had awakened her first thing in the morning, with a credit alert from her bank. At first , it hadn’t been clear to her, but in that minutes that followed, Derek had emerged from his home office, asking her to pack her things and prepare to leave for the airport but she insisted that she see Diane before leaving. It was then the truth and the reality of the situation had finally dawned on her. Diane didn’t have any objections, in her opinion leaving the city was a good idea. It would keep her away from Derek and she wouldn’t be hurt by him again in the future. So, the two of them agreed to book their plane ticket and leave the next day. Tired and frustrated, Tasha rose to her feet, attempting to turn on the tv to take her mind off her situation for a while. She flipped through the channels but couldn’t see anything interesting. After a while, she gave up and was returning to the bed when a wave of dizziness hit her, causing her to fall onto the bed, as a slight headache began to form. She huffed in annoyance trying to rise to a sitting position, but this time, she didn’t need her strength to pull her through as the urgent need to puke had her scrambling to her feet and rushing towards the bathroom. “Tasha, are you okay?” Diane was worried, hoping it wasn’t what she was thinking. “Yeah, I’m good,” The bacon and toast she’d had for breakfast were soon floating in the toilet, while she was still bent over it, emptying her bowels. “I can’t fall sick now,” she murmured to herself, recalling that for the past five days, her mornings had been the same__feeling weak and dizzy, then throwing up. “Tasha, are you sure you’re okay? You look pale, let’s go to the hospital.” Diane suggested, staring at her face. “I missed my period, Diane.” It’s been two days into a new month and her period was yet to come. It was already nine days late. Never in her life had she experienced a late period. “Wait, are you pregnant?” Diane asked with her eyes wide opened. “No, it… it can’t be.. it was… Again, she shook her head in denial, but her heart was slamming hard against her chest, already seeing the possibility of the impossible becoming a reality. Without further thoughts, she flushed the toilet and sped out of the bathroom. “We need to go to a hospital or a pharmacy,” Diane suggested, quickly grabbing her purse from the bed. About thirty minutes later, they returned to the house with about five pregnancy tests, Tasha was fervently praying that her worst nightmare wouldn’t come to pass. Diane helped her as she urinated on all five of them and began pacing the room, while awaiting the results. “The results are ready, Tasha.” Diane announced. Tasha expelled a loud breath, telling herself to calm down as it couldn’t be. “They are all positive, Tasha. I’m so sorry,” Tears of distress and regret streamed down Tasha’s face as she sank down to the bedroom floor, blaming herself for landing in such a predicament. How was she going to handle the situation? How could she land herself in such a hopeless and helpless state? She was lost in the world and all by herself. Could she really take care of a baby when she wasn’t sure about her future? These questions and many more ran through her head as she continued crying. How could she be pregnant for the same man that has rejected her and even asked her never to show her face in the city again? “Tasha, everything would be fine. Derek doesn’t deserve you at all!!” Diane was furious, patting her on her shoulders. “Diane we need to leave this city as soon as possible, please we need to go,” Tired and drained, Tasha rose to her feet, heading for the closet. “Are you not going to tell him? Tasha do you want to suffer? You need to let him know what he did! He needs to take full responsibility for it!!” With tears-streaked eyes, Tasha protectively wrapped an arm around her flat stomach, staring down at it, “no, you are the only one that knows about this, Diane. Let it remain that way.” “Are you really going to do this?” “Diane, I don’t want to push it anymore, and I ask that you don’t push it either. Just let it go, I have accepted the fact that Derek and I are divorced now.” “Don’t worry Tasha, I’m here with you. When this child is born, I will help you raise him or her.” “Thank you, Diane. I really appreciate.”
