The weekend came and went. Josey sat in her lab designing a system for the country of Wilshana. In her down time, she maintained the dimensional transporters and assistance for Nethersigh. They weren’t really needed though. Most of the people preferred flying or running to their destination.
The most crucial devices were created by the scientists. The weather machine that covered Nethersigh in clouds. The medicine prepared to remove vampires' deadly sensitivity to the sun. And the most pertinent of all was the blood storage machine.
She had finally found something to keep her busy until the boys came. She had so many questions and things on her mind about the pregnancy. When she found out Valin was alive, she was happy Victor would get to see his father and live in their country. It didn’t hit her until Liv and Adiv were talking about Amasai, that she would not get to keep Victor from day one. Victor would be cradled and fed in Dsa’s arms. Since she was no longer in Valin’s heart, he probably wouldn’t even allow her to hold the crowned prince.
Josey kept blindly sketching as her heart thumped loudly in her chest. Her hands trembled. A tear ran down her face as she thought about not being able to hold Victor or see his eyes open or hear his cries. She took deeper breaths then thought, “At least he will be close by, Amasai might have to live in Yanrana.” Josey covered her face with her hands and released some of the pain.
She wanted to wrap her hands tightly around Cofer’s neck for blocking her link. Once that link was intentionally severed he would need to be with her to recreate it. There was no way for them to communicate. Even if she tried to call his dimensional speaker it wouldn’t go through. Everything in the forest of Milv was primitive and demonic. It reminded her of Sambofah, except it was stuck between the human realm and Hell.
There was so much she had not thought through and as first time parents, she felt like her and Cofer were failing already. She needed him the most and he was off trying to hide secrets for as long as he could. She was sure that she knew all of his secrets but something was eating away at him.
By noon, Shion was rolling in a cart filled with an assortment of Josey’s favorite foods and craved items. She was going to give birth to two strapping baby princes. They needed to be strong to withstand the challenges ahead of them.
Josey took several salted cucumbers and a baguette filled with strawberry cream cheese from the cart. She felt weird eating the combination of food but it tasted like heaven. Shion stood by silently, ready to provide anything her queen and the princes may need. Once Josey seemed to finish with her lunch, she announced the schedule for the week.
There were several meetings to attend in order to finalize construction projects. Her dinner with her parents was moved to the current day. Her parents still worked at the research facility, near Priesham. They were more or less in the capacity of spies for the Cofer. Solvain did not question it though. He was still getting what he wanted from the two.
Hearing the news that her parents would be available sooner than the end of the week, took away some of her anxiety. The thought that she would need to hold all her questions in for that more than two more days made her stomach turn.
Josey drank a glass of apple juice and dismissed Shion. Her mind was a mess. She leaned forward, and rested her eyes.
The sound of sea gulls cackling rose in the darkness behind her eye lids. It had been a while since she visited her dream realm. She gently wiped her cheek. The ocean breeze left light flakes of cold water across her cheek. The smell of the salty fish water soaked the air. She left her nose raised to the sky taking in the sands between her toes. The smell of fish became stronger by the second, smelling more metallic and pungent than before. She refocused on the grainy texture that laden her hands. The sand was peculiar.
This was not her dream realm. Though she had not touched the sand, it continued to gather on her hands. She shook her hands to remove the access dirt but to no avail. Her thoughts ventured to the ocean in front of her. Small sudsy waves breached the shoreline. She took several steps forward and the ocean seemed to be trying to elude her. She moved quicker as the currents recessed. The grains accumulated on her legs and up her arms. She became stiff as a board. As the sand rushed over her body she lost the ability to move and breathe. She stared out into the muted world.
Her normal reaction would have been to call for Cofer as the existential terror rushed over her body. She chose to let go.
Josey’s eyes shot open and she stood up, stumbling backwards. Her heart beat at a thousand miles per hour. She fell to one knee and grabbed her chest. She tried hard to catch her breath, to settle what she was sure was a panic attack. Soon the tremors subsided. She stood up and the lights in her lab had come on, it was already evening time. She checked the clock and then quickly proceeded to hurry to get cleaned up and ready for dinner.
When Josey got to the front door of their mansion, Shion stood ready to walk next door with her. “You don’t need to. I will be alright.” Josey said to her. She squinted her eyes at Shion. “Why is she being so protective all of a sudden?” Josey thought then moved past her. Her parents' front door was no more than 40 feet away. Halfway there a resident stopped in his tracks while walking with his family and asked if she needed him to stay by her side.
“Not going far but thank you.” Josey said, a little annoyed. The man and his family bowed deeply then stood and watched Josey.
She increased her pace. She was sure Shion was watching her too. The number of eyes attentively stalking her were burning into her skin. She started to feel uneasy. First her weird dream, then that. As she arrived at her parents' doorstep she looked back to see if they were still watching. They were. And several other vampires stood quietly on the other side of the street, watching her. Her heart rate increased as she ascended the staircase, before she reached the top step her father had opened the door.
“What the f**k is going on?” Sueli asked Josey. A chill ran up her spine unlike any other.
“Darling are you okay? Come in quickly, please.” Sauti asked out of concern.
Before she could answer, Freda hugged and kissed Josey. “Did you walk over here alone?” Freda spoke into Josey’s ear while she hugged her.
“Mom, I live next door.”
Sauti placed his hand on Freda’s shoulder, then looked at Josey. “Let’s take a seat. We need to catch up. It has been awhile.”
It had been a while. In fact, she hadn’t spoken to or seen her parents since the night Valin died. She didn’t see them because they were conveniently next door but because they were never home. That had not changed. They were always in the middle of some form of ground breaking research.
Josey sat in the living room on the sofa with her dad, while her mom sat in the chair next to the sofa. A cook had been called in to prepare their meal.
Josey twiddled her fingers shortly before breaking the deepening silence, “If you don’t already know Valin is alive.” She paused to gauge her parents' reaction. Both looked down but neither were surprised. [They knew.]
“So I am assuming you were in on the cover up?” Josey scoffed.
“Not voluntarily.” Freda quickly responded. Her dad continued looking down.
“Well.. I have been working in the castle. My body guards are Yanrana Rogues. They told me something that I would like for you to confirm.” She said as she leaned in to look in her fathers eyes.
“The more I look at you father, the more I realize that we haven’t seen each other because you were avoiding me.” Josey sat back and crossed her arms.
“Honey. {sigh}...a lot of surprising things happened over the past 5 months. I couldn’t wrap my head around most of it. And then a large percentage of it, I required graceful timing.” Sauti looked up. His purple eyes had a slight glow.
“Did you have a vision of me that day, too?” Josey asked.
“Yes. We,the descendants’ were alerted of your presence in order to mate with you before you could ascend.”
Josey raised her brows and looked confusedly at her father.
“Wait. I feel like we are talking about two different times. When was your vision?”
“The first one was when Sueli came to the human realm. The day of your wedding.”
Josey took a deep breath, “How many visions have you had of me?”
“Three.” Her father whispered.
“But the rogues said they only had one?”
“The higher the rank the more alerts, one gets.”
“Alerts…You have to be kidding me.. Are you saying that my soul's presence sends out f*****g alerts?” They hadn’t even gotten to her actual questions and she was already irritated.
“Yes. Sueli's entry into this world sent out a mating beacon. Since she can only exist here for 24 hours, only those compatible to produce the highest quality children were notified. You were already with Cofer when the others arrived. “
“How many?”
“Six. They made it to the front of the above ground castle but couldn’t get in. I met with them. There were your twin cousins from Sambofah, the crowned princes. Then four other crowned princes from the larger kingdoms within Yanrana. Two of which were already married. You understand why?” Sauti waited for Josey’s response.
“Sueli's offspring would be the reigning King of all kingdoms of Yanrana?”
“Correct. Her ascension would only be on hiatus until she gave birth to the child which history concludes to about 4 months. Then she….ascends. “
