Chapter 2: The Groom Card

746 Words
Amelia family lived in a beautiful two-story cottage in an upscale part of the countryside, complete with a spacious parking pad in front. As their low-profile Ford pulled up in front of the house, Amelia took a deep breath. She hopped out, but her long white wedding dress got caught on the seat, and she heard the fabric tear as she stepped onto the pavement, a big hole had formed in the hem. Surprisingly, she wasn’t bothered at all. Without hesitation, she reached down, tore off the trailing tail of the dress, and tossed it aside. Her gaze drifted to the closed villa door nearby. "Do you want me to come in with you?" A low, mellow voice asked from behind her. She suddenly remembered she wasn’t alone. Turning, she met the steady gaze of Johnson, her new husband from their whirlwind marriage. The thought made her feel a little awkward. She touched her nose nervously and smiled. "No, I’ve got this on my own." Even though they had just tied the knot, she wasn’t quite ready for him to meet her family. It felt like admitting that he wasn’t part of her world just yet. Luckily, Johnson didn’t press the issue. Instead, he reached into his pocket and pulled out a light green bank card, holding it out to her between his slender fingers. "Take this." She blinked, caught off guard. "What’s this for?" "I have things to take care of, so I can't stick around," he explained calmly. "Just head to our new place and grab whatever you need. If anything’s missing, use this card—no password needed." On the way here, he had mentioned buying a new house in Downhill and hoped she would move in with him. Since she wasn’t eager to stay with her family, she hadn't objected. But she hadn’t expected him to hand over a bank card like this, essentially putting her in charge. Talk about adapting quickly. Still, she wasn’t exactly thrilled about spending his money. She didn’t know much about him, aside from the fact that he drove an older ford worth a few eight of thousands of dollars. His family seemed pretty average, so it felt wrong to let him foot the bill—especially since he had just bought the house. But rejecting his offer outright didn’t seem wise either. After all, men had their pride. Rolling her eyes playfully, she placed her hand on his wrist and gently pushed the card back toward him with a flirtatious smile. "Come on, we haven’t even gotten our marriage license yet. Aren’t you worried I might just run off with your money?" "Not a chance," Johnson replied smoothly, his enchanting eyes lifting slightly, a playful glimmer dancing in them. "Unless your proposal was just a whim and you have no intention of being responsible for me." The way he said "responsible" sent a strange shiver through her. His tone was casual, but the words carried weight. She blinked, taken aback. "Of course I’m serious. It’s just that too Forward She hesitated, still wanting to refuse. But before she could finish, he had already slipped the card into her hand without a second thought. "Look, we might not have the legal certificate yet, but since we had a wedding, I feel like I ought to do my part, even if we’re not officially husband and wife." His gaze was steady, an undeniable presence radiating from him. Before she could protest, he continued, "Just take it. It’s not a huge amount, but it should help take care of our family." The edge of the card grazed her palm as she clenched it gently. "It’s not like you’re the only one responsible for the family." Johnson chuckled softly, a hint of charm in his voice. "Then think of it as my way of trying to earn brownie points. Just don’t turn me down." It would be embarrassing if his friends in their business world found out that he made the first move and got rejected. He insisted, and she sighed in exasperation. "Fine, I’ll keep the card for now." But in her heart, she was determined not to touch the money. She still wasn’t sure if they could make this work, so there was no point in spending his cash. Johnson gave her a knowing look, as if he could read her thoughts, but he didn’t push it. For him, her accepting the card was already a step forward
