Chapter 2: Opportunity

616 Words
Luna bit her lip, striving to infuse her tone with casual ease. "Yes, it has been five or six years since we got married." Sam fell silent. A chill crept up Luna's spine. She struggled with social interactions, especially with imposing personalities. In her youth, she could mask her character flaws with a gentle demeanour. But as she matured, she had to concede that perhaps she truly was like the moonflower depicted in novels—unable to exude unmatched strength, incapable even of meeting someone’s gaze directly. "Well, nothing urgent, I'll take my leave now." Luna forced a smile at Sam, eager to distance herself from him. "Let's exchange contacts; meeting after all these years must be fate." Sam's voice echoed in her ears. Luna clenched her lips, mustered her courage, and gently declined, "No, thank you. It's been many years since we last met; let's keep it that way." With a brief apology, she turned and slowly walked away. Sam's gaze lingered on Luna. Slender and graceful, she seemed fragile. The intimidating stare made Luna unable to even glance back. Back at home, she finally exhaled. For Luna, the encounter with Sam seemed like a passing breeze, stirring no ripples in her heart. Her immediate concern was earning a livelihood. Kiki, now four years old and attending kindergarten, required parental care. With Edward gone, only she remained to shoulder the responsibility. Without a means to work, given Kiki's dependence on her, Luna's financial resources dwindled. Edward, fond of investments, had a foreign account from which he provided her with monthly expenses. Apart from a sizeable compensation she received when Edward first disappeared, which was spent in search efforts, she now possessed only a modest sum, including a recent check of two hundred thousand. While her assets were substantial, including a fully paid house and a car under Edward's name, selling the house was not an option due to S City's exorbitant real estate prices. Kiki's education was a priority, leaving Luna feeling anchored. Recalling the novel's narrative, Luna pondered a potential move to another city. However, she realized that such a decision might not yield a better life but instead exacerbate their circumstances. So, for now, she had to stay put. Amidst her anxieties, Luna's phone vibrated. It was a message from a client. Ever since Kiki started kindergarten, Luna had been exploring ways to earn money. With a knack for nail artistry, she created an online presence showcasing her work. Each design received praise, garnering a steady client base. As inquiries flooded in, Luna's eyes sparkled with hope. Perhaps transitioning to a freelance nail artist could provide a viable income stream. Responding to a potential client's request for a home visit, Luna negotiated a time slot. The offer of 5000 yuan for services left her stunned—it was a significant sum. Although hesitant due to Kiki's presence, Luna proposed bringing her daughter along, seeking understanding from the client. An affirmative response bolstered Luna's spirits. On Saturday, Luna, armed with her nail art supplies, accompanied by Kiki, headed to a client's upscale residence. Welcomed by the housekeeper, Luna met Rowena, a poised and elegant young woman. Identified by her online moniker, Luna greeted Rowena, who complimented Kiki's charm. Transitioning to their purpose, Luna inquired about starting the nail session. Under Rowena's watchful eye, Luna began her meticulous work, demonstrating professionalism that garnered respect from the onlookers. Despite being noticed for her beauty, Luna remained focused on her task. As the day unfolded, Luna's client expressed satisfaction, and even amid unexpected interruptions, Luna's resolve remained unwavering. The mention of Sam's arrival sent a ripple of intrigue through Rowena, promising an unforeseen turn in their day.
