Violet’s POV I didn’t even know why my legs had carried me to his office. After what he did to me yesterday, I Shouldn't be here. But here I was... Somewhere inside me--- beneath all the bruises, all the bitter silences, all the cold mornings--- I still believed that something in Xaden might be worth saving. That maybe, if I walked in and reminded him of who we were… of who he used to be… he might look at me and come to his senses. But gods, I was wrong. So very wrong. The moment I pushed open that door and saw her, sprawled across his lap like some crowned victory, all breath left my lungs. It didn't creep away--- it collapsed out of me like dying stars. My legs gave way under me. My heart didn’t shatter. No, it ripped--- like parchment set aflame. He saw me. His eyes met mine.
