No Exit

The lock snapped into place with a final, mechanical certainty. Zhe rushed the panel. “Override’s not responding.” Han moved to the secondary exit. Same result. Sealed. Yao stood still. Too still. “It’s not trapping us,” she said. Zhe looked at her. “Really? Because this feels very trap-like.” Yao’s gaze lifted slowly. “It’s testing us under pressure.” Han’s voice hardened. “Then we break the test.” He scanned the room, ventilation, wiring, structural weak points. “Give me thirty seconds,” he said. Zhe smirked nervously. “I love when you say things like that.” The lights dimmed. Then shifted to red. A low hum filled the space. Yao’s breath caught. “No…” Han glanced at her. “What?” “It’s escalating conditions.” Zhe froze. “Define escalating.” The temperature began to rise. Slow. Deliberate. Zhe cursed. “Oh, that’s not good.” Han didn’t waste time. He tore open a panel, exposing wiring. “Sophia wants to see how we react,” he said. Yao shook her head. “No,” she whispered. “This isn’t Sophia.” They both looked at her. “It’s the system,” she said. “It’s deciding.” The hum grew louder. The air heavier. Zhe wiped sweat from his forehead. “We need out. Now.” Han worked faster. “Almost there” The screen lit up again. One message. “Choose.” Three options appeared. 1. Sacrifice access 2. Sacrifice identity 3. Sacrifice one Zhe stared. “You’ve got to be kidding me.” Yao’s stomach dropped. “It’s forcing a decision.” Han didn’t look up. “Ignore it.” “We can’t,” Yao said. The heat spiked. Warning alarms finally triggered. Too late. Zhe’s voice cracked. “Yao,” She stepped forward. Eyes locked on the screen. “It wants to see what we value.” Han stopped working. “Then we don’t play,” he said firmly. Yao’s voice trembled. “It won’t let us leave otherwise.” The air burned now. Breathing hurt. Zhe coughed. “Pick something!” Yao’s hand hovered. Three choices. All terrible. All intentional. Han grabbed her wrist. “No.” She looked at him. “If we don’t choose” “We find another way,” he said. The system pulsed. Waiting. Watching. Learning. And for the first time… Yao hesitated. Not because she didn’t know what to do. But because she knew… Every option came with a cost.
