CHAPTER 4: THE SHADOW IN THE MIRROR

1372 Words
The sharp, metallic click of my apartment lock echoed like a gunshot through the suffocating silence of the night. I dragged my exhausted body inside the dimly lit foyer, kicking off my heels with a ragged sigh. A sharp, white-hot throb shot straight up from my bandaged ankle, reminding me of the sheer physical toll the last twenty-four hours had taken. The golden ink on Alexander’s classified marriage agreement felt like an indelible brand burned directly onto my skin. I was officially bound to the most dangerous executive in the city—a man who had held my bare ankle in his palm hours ago and sealed my fate with a cold, possessive whisper inside a rain-slicked limousine. I had no energy left to analyze Alexander’s true motives, nor the impending war with the syndicate. But duty in the digital shadows called, regardless of my physical exhaustion. I sat down at my vanity desk, wincing as I adjusted my stance. I applied a light coat of pastel makeup, popping in bright contact lenses and pulling a soft, blonde cosplay wig over my natural hair. Within minutes, the sharp assassin who had carved a scar into a mafia heir was replaced by a sweet, flawless anime aesthetic. I booted up my streaming software, and the moment my live camera broadcast went online, the chat box exploded with rapid-fire messages. I forced a bright smile onto my face, forcing my voice into the cheerful cadence my audience adored. PING. A massive $2,000 donation alert suddenly flashed across the top of my screen, bathing the dark room in a bright golden light. The username lit up in bold font: "A". [A]: "You are pushing yourself beyond your limits tonight. Shut down the broadcast and go to sleep." My breath hitched. The underlying authority in his text carried the exact same unyielding tone Alexander had used when he raised my leg onto his thigh hours ago. A sudden chill swept over my skin. I forced a playful giggle for the camera, thanked him warmly to keep up appearances, and immediately terminated the stream. Exhaustion finally crushed my defenses. I stripped off the wig, washed away the makeup, and collapsed onto my bed in a delicate black silk nightgown. My ankle was throbbing softly beneath the tight compression wraps. I pulled the heavy duvet over my shoulders, closed my burning eyes, and allowed the heavy darkness to swallow my consciousness. My mind drifted into a heavy, feverish haze where the boundaries of reality and nightmares dissolved entirely. In the suffocating dimness of my sleep, I felt the air in the bedroom plunge below freezing. I tried to shift my weight, but a sudden, crushing weight pinned my wrists violently against the mattress above my head. The rich scent of Alexander's cedarwood cologne seemed to blend with the metallic stench of rain and fresh copper blood. Wake up, Eliana. It’s just a nightmare, my subconscious screamed. I thrashed against the grip, forcing my heavy eyelids open, expecting the empty room of a bad dream to dissolve before my eyes. It didn't. The weight pressing down on my chest was terrifyingly solid. The suffocating heat of a real human body trapped my legs against the mattress. The grip burning into my wrists was made of bone and steel. A tall silhouette leaned down out of the shadows, his face illuminated by the moonlight filtering through the open balcony doors. Sleek silver hair fell over his forehead. Crimson eyes flared in the pitch-black darkness with an unhinged, predatory hunger. And right across his sharp cheekbone was the fresh, bleeding crimson line I had carved with my razor blade hours ago. Dante was not a ghost in my mind. He was in my room. "Did you really think a fever dream or a piece of paper could protect you from me, little bird?" Dante purred, his deep, velvet baritone echoing directly against my skin. My blood ran completely cold. Real panic surged through my veins like electricity. I bucked my hips, trying to slam my knee into his torso, but he shifted effortlessly, pinning my lower body beneath his heavy frame. "Get off me!" I hissed, my voice razor-sharp, dropping the helpless secretary façade completely. Dante chuckled—a dark, reverberating sound that sent shivers straight down my spine. He lowered his head, his sharp jawline brushing against the sensitive skin of my neck. His gloved hand slid up from my wrist to cup my throat, his thumb pressing with agonizing precision directly over my hammering pulse point. "I saw the confidential alerts on my drive here, Eliana," Dante whispered, his warm breath fanning across my lips, his crimson eyes gleaming with a terrifying, wild madness. "Alexander Vance declared his engagement to an unnamed, protected woman. The underworld thinks he's hiding a fragile heiress." He leaned in closer, his teeth lightly grazing the line of my jaw, sending a violent shockwave through my blood. "But my informants inside his network know the truth," Dante growled softly, his thumb tracing the curve of my lower lip with dangerous obsession. "He didn't hide a socialite. He hid you. Alexander thinks he can sign our corporate alliance by day and keep you locked away by night. But he doesn't know what you taste like when you're fighting for your life. He doesn't know the lethal look in your eyes when you hold a blade to a man's throat." "He will kill you for breaking into this building," I rasped out, glaring up into his crimson eyes with pure, unadulterated venom, refusing to show him a shred of weakness. "Let him try," Dante purred, his smirk widening as he traced the outline of my face with his gloved finger, lingering on my lips. "A war with the Vance Empire is a small price to pay for a prize like you. We still have a corporate contract to sign tomorrow, Eliana. I'll be in your office every single day... just to watch you pretend you don't know who marked my face." Before I could reach for the hidden blade tucked beneath my pillow, the quiet hum of a heavy black sedan idling directly on the street below echoed through the open balcony window, followed by the sharp, metallic crunch of footsteps approaching the hallway outside my door. Dante paused, his eyes flicking toward the door with a slow, dark amusement. He leaned down one last time, pressing his lips so close to my ear that his breath burned my skin. "Your 'fiancé' has very fast security, Eliana. But remember this feeling... because next time, no one will be coming to save you." With inhuman speed, Dante released his grip, stepping back into the shadows of the balcony and vanishing into the rainy night just as my heavy oak apartment door was unlocked from the outside. I sat up, gasping for air, my heart pounding violently against my ribs as the door swung open, revealing the tall, imposing figure of Alexander Vance flanked by armed guards, his dark eyes scanning the room with lethal intent. Alexander crossed the room in three long strides, his sharp gaze locking onto the open balcony door before dropping to my trembling frame, my silk gown, and the faint, lingering red mark on my neck where Dante’s thumb had rested. A dangerous, terrifying darkness washed over Alexander's face—a quiet rage far more menacing than Dante’s wild insanity. "He was here," Alexander stated, his voice dropping into a low, deadly growl that vibrated through the quiet room. He reached down, his large, warm hand cupping my jaw with a surprisingly gentle firmness, turning my face to inspect the skin. "Did he touch you?" "I handled it," I breathed, forcing my posture straight, trying to reclaim my composure. Alexander’s eyes narrowed into twin slits of pure ice as he stepped closer, his body blocking out the cold night air rushing through the balcony. "You are my fiancée now, Eliana. Moving forward, you don't handle anything alone."
