The moment Pakhi Sharma clicked Join Meeting, her heart pounded in her chest like it was trying to make an escape.
It was her first call with the client team. Her first formal introduction. A new project, a new company, and an entirely remote setup—yet the nerves felt no less real than a boardroom presentation.
“Hi, good morning everyone,” she said as the audio connected, her voice a little more confident than she felt.
“Good morning,” came a few scattered replies.
Then one voice stood out.
Calm. Deep. Unhurried.
“Hi, Pakhi. "Welcome onboard,” the voice said. “I’m Rehaan from the client side. We’re glad to have you.”
That was it. No video, no face—just a name and a voice that immediately struck something in her. Rehaan. The name sounded graceful, almost poetic. And the way he said her name—slow, deliberate, like he meant it—lingered for reasons she couldn’t explain.
She swallowed, hoping her voice didn’t betray the odd flutter in her chest.
“Thank you, Rehaan. Looking forward to working with you all.”
The rest of the call passed in a blur of project scope, delivery schedules, and tech stack overviews. Pakhi spoke only when spoken to, scribbled notes like her life depended on it, and kept her camera off, just as everyone else did. That’s how most remote calls worked—efficient, faceless, forgettable.
Except this one wasn’t.
Something about the way Rehaan handled the conversation—polite, firm, never dismissive—stayed with her. He didn’t interrupt. He acknowledged every speaker. He even corrected someone gently without making it awkward.
It was rare.
After the call ended, she sat still for a few seconds longer, headphones still on. Her screen had gone back to the meeting summary screen. Empty. Quiet.
But that voice—Rehaan’s voice—was still echoing in her ears.
She didn’t know what he looked like. She didn’t know how old he was. And she certainly didn’t know why just one call had left her this curious.
But as she stared at her blank screen, she whispered to herself, almost amused:
It’s just a voice, Pakhi. Don’t be ridiculous.
And yet, somewhere between the formalities and sign-offs, something had shifted. She didn’t know it yet, but her life had quietly taken a turn she couldn’t see.
A name had been planted in her mind.
And slowly, unknowingly… her heart had begun to respond.
