CHAPTER 4 CONTINUES

Ava nodded, still unsure of how she felt, but sensing the sincerity in his words. It wasn’t that she couldn’t understand the hurt that had come with his previous marriage, it was just… What if the scars were too deep? What if their relationship couldn’t escape the shadows of what had come before? Before she could speak, her phone buzzed in her pocket. Pulling it out, she saw a text from her brother, Nathan. She frowned slightly—he never texted her at this hour unless it was something important. Nathan: “Ava, I need to talk to you. It’s urgent. Please call me.” A sense of dread washed over her as she excused herself from Ethan, walking a few feet away to call Nathan. The phone rang twice before he picked up. “Ava,” he said, his voice tinged with worry, “you need to come home. There’s been a situation with Mom and Dad. I think it’s serious.” Ava’s stomach twisted. “What happened? Is everything okay?” Nathan’s voice cracked slightly. “I don’t know, Ava. There’s a lot going on. I need you to come home now.” Without thinking, Ava ended the call and turned to Ethan, her expression serious. “I’m so sorry, I have to go. My parents… something’s happened. I don’t know what yet, but Nathan needs me.” Ethan nodded, his concern evident. “Of course, go. I’ll be here when you’re ready to talk.” Ava quickly gathered her things, her mind racing with worry. She had spent so many years trying to shield herself from the chaos of her family’s past, and now it seemed like she was being pulled right back into it. When Ava arrived at her parents’ house, she found Nathan pacing in the living room. His usual calm demeanor was gone, replaced by frantic energy. “What’s going on, Nathan?” Ava asked, her voice tight with worry. He didn’t answer immediately, instead gesturing for her to sit. “Mom’s been hiding something from us. Something big.” Ava’s brow furrowed. “What do you mean? What’s happening?” Nathan ran a hand through his hair. “I don’t know all the details, but it seems like Dad’s business has been in serious trouble for years. And now, everything’s unraveling. I think we might lose everything. The house, everything they’ve worked for…” Ava’s heart sank. Her parents had always been the foundation of her life, the solid, reliable constants. The idea of them facing such turmoil was almost too much to process. “What do we do?” “We stick together,” Nathan said firmly. “We get through this. We’re going to need each other more than ever.” As Ava sat there, her mind spinning with the weight of what was happening to her family, her thoughts kept drifting back to Ethan. She wanted to tell him about all of this about the pain, the turmoil, the uncertainty that had suddenly reappeared in her life. But there was a knot in her chest. Could she lean on him? Or was he carrying too much of his own past to be the partner she needed right now? And just like that, the weight of her family’s crisis and Ethan’s past collided in a way that made Ava feel torn in two directions. The weight of the evening lingered as Ava sat in the living room of her parents’ house, Nathan’s words still echoing in her mind. She could feel her heart split between two overwhelming worlds the one she had with Ethan, which felt like a sanctuary from the chaos of her past, and the world of her family, a world that was crumbling around her. For a long time, she had kept her distance from her family’s problems, her parents’ business struggles, and the financial messes that seemed to follow them from one crisis to another. She had always been the steady one, the one who held it together, never asking for help, always focusing on her own life and future. But now, it was clear that everything was coming to a head—and she wasn’t sure how to navigate it without losing herself in the process. Nathan sat down across from her, his face drawn, his usual calm composure gone. He looked like a man who was carrying a burden far too heavy to bear on his own. “Ava, we need to figure out how we’re going to handle this. I don’t know how much longer Mom and Dad can keep this from us. If they don’t get help soon, we could lose everything.” Ava nodded, her mind reeling. “I don’t even know where to start.” “You don’t have to do it alone,” Nathan said, reaching over to take her hand. “We’ll figure this out together. But first, you should talk to them. They need to know we’re here for them. I know they’ve always wanted to protect us from their mistakes, but it’s time to face the music.” Ava felt the familiar pressure of responsibility settling on her chest. The weight of being the dependable one, the one who could make everything better, was heavy. But now, as the reality of the situation sank in, she realized that her parents’ crisis wasn’t something she could fix alone. She wasn’t sure how to help them, or if she even could. She excused herself to make a quick call. As she stepped out onto the porch, she pulled out her phone and hesitated before dialing Ethan’s number. Her thumb hovered over the screen for a moment, but the ringing stopped her thoughts as he picked up. “Ava?” Ethan’s voice was warm and calming, as always. “Are you okay? You’ve been gone a while.” “I… I don’t know if I’m okay,” she said softly, her voice faltering slightly. “There’s been an emergency with my parents. I’m not sure what to do. Nathan and I are trying to figure everything out, but it’s a mess.” “I’m so sorry, Ava,” Ethan replied, his tone filled with concern. “Is there anything I can do?” She wanted to say yes. She wanted to lean on him, to ask him to help her navigate this storm that seemed to be spinning out of control. But the truth was, she wasn’t sure if she was ready for him to be pulled into this whirlwind of family drama, especially given the walls he’d built around his own past. “I don’t know if I can ask you to be a part of this right now,” she said, her voice filled with uncertainty. “This… this is a lot. And I don’t want to bring you into something so messy.” Ethan was silent for a moment, and she could hear the deep breath he took on the other end. Then, softly, he replied, “Ava, you don’t have to go through this alone. You don’t have to protect me from your family or your past. I care about you, and that means I care about everything that’s part of your life even the tough parts. If you need me, I’m here.” Her heart fluttered at his words, but the walls she had built around herself in response to her family’s chaos suddenly felt like they were crumbling. Could she really let him in? Could she really allow herself to trust him with her most vulnerable moments? Before she could answer, he added, “I know it’s a lot to ask, but you don’t have to carry this burden by yourself, Ava. I’m not going anywhere.” Tears pricked at the back of her eyes, and she blinked them back, not wanting to break down in front of him. “Thank you, Ethan,” she whispered. “I just… I don’t know if I can handle all of this.” “You don’t have to handle it alone,” he repeated. “You have me.” Ava closed her eyes, letting his words settle in her heart. Maybe this was the moment she needed to trust someone completely. Maybe it was time to stop carrying all the weight herself. The next few days were a blur of meetings, phone calls, and stressful conversations with her parents. Their financial struggles, which had been hidden from her and Nathan for so long, were worse than they had anticipated. The situation with her father’s business was dire, and despite their best efforts, it seemed like they were on the verge of losing everything. Through it all, Ethan remained by her side. He checked in with her every evening, offering support and a shoulder to lean on. He didn’t pressure her to share more than she was ready to, but he was there when she needed to talk. His patience was a balm to her raw emotions, and each time they spoke, she felt herself growing more comfortable with the idea of leaning on him, of letting him into the chaos of her world. One evening, after a particularly draining phone call with her parents, Ava sat on the porch of her parents’ house, looking out at the horizon, the sunset casting a golden glow over the world. She felt exhausted, drained by everything happening around her, but when she looked down at the bracelet Ethan had given her, she realized something important. He had given her more than just a physical gift. He had given her a promise a promise that no matter what happened, they were in this together. Her phone buzzed, and she picked it up to see a text from Ethan. Ethan: “I was thinking we could take a break this weekend. A real one. Just you and me. No talk of family or business, just us. What do you say?” A smile tugged at her lips. She needed that more than she realized. Ava: “That sounds perfect. I could really use a break from all this. Where should we go?” Ethan: “I was thinking we could take a drive. I know a quiet spot by the lake. It’s peaceful. Just us, the stars, and the sound of the water.” Ava: “That sounds exactly what I need.” She set the phone down, feeling a little lighter. There was still so much to figure out with her family, so much uncertainty looming ahead, but for the first time in days, she allowed herself to imagine a moment of peace, a moment where she could just be with Ethan, away from the world. As the weekend approached, Ava couldn’t help but feel a sense of hope beginning to blossom. Maybe their story wasn’t as simple as she had once imagined it, but maybe that’s what made it so real. Love wasn’t perfect, and it certainly wasn’t easy, but with Ethan by her side, she felt like she could face anything. And perhaps, in the quiet moments by the lake, she would find the strength to let go of the past and trust that, together, they could write a new chapter.
