JARED'S POV
I drove straight to the hospital for the first time in three years. Memories that I'd tucked and put away came flooding back to me. This was torture.
Immediately I got to the hospital, she was carried on a stretcher and wheeled away.
The waiting room felt like a dead sentence and the smell of disinfectants, medicines and whatever f**k was smelling felt like I was being handed a cup full of poison to drink. I felt like running away.
It was in this same hospital that my wife and daughter got shot.
A trigger-happy bastard entered the hospital and started shooting people at random.
It was in this same waiting room that I had stood for hours before being told that my wife and daughter were gone.
The hospital wasn't my favorite place to be. In fact, I'd sworn never to set my feet in one even if I was dying, but here I was praying to the universe not to let me down this time and keep this lady safe.
The doctor came out after what looked like eternity.
“Mr Ashton, we just finished taking care of her, and she's stable for now. She hit her head so badly, and we don't know the level of damage done till she wakes up. We'll keep you updated as time progresses. We've transferred her to a private room and if you want to go be with her, you're very free”.
I felt relieved, at least she was alive, I wasn't responsible for someone's death. I closed my eyes and breathed a very long sigh of relief.
I went to stay with her, it didn't feel right leaving her on her own.
I had spoken with the police earlier, and they said they were going to go back to the accident site to check if she had any properties or anything that could be used to identify her, so I just needed to stay with her till her people came for her.
Morning came with me still seated on the chair by her side. I just didn't want to leave.
What if I left and then something bad happened? That was the case with Grace and Lily. I went back home to pack some more clothes for Grace and I came back to emptiness. No, that won't happen again. I can't be responsible for anyone's death.
“Mr Ashton, how are you doing?” asked officer Daniel, as he entered the hospital room. I stood up to shake him and his companion.
“Any news, I asked, were you able to identify her?”
“Unfortunately, we couldn't. We got to the site and only saw some clothes on the floor. From what we could see, it looked like some vandals got into her car ahead of us and drove off with it and, out of the good gesture of their heart, they threw some clothes on the floor,” officer Daniel said.
God this is bad, this is terrible.
“Let's just wait till she wakes up, and then we'll know more." With that, the officers left, and I was back to my thoughts.
Trust those hungry urchins to pounce on anything, yesterday was indeed their luck.
The only thing I could do was wait, since anything that would have led to us finding her family and relieving me of this nightmare was gone, I could only wait.
Wait and hope that fate doesn't play me a fast one this time around.
