“Mother, what are you doing here?” I say, still recovering from the shock of my mother’s sudden presence. A spark of rage begins just below the surface, like a volcano waiting to erupt. So much has happened today, and the day wasn’t even over. With the investigation still incomplete, and a crucial conversation with Ila about the future looming, my day was far from over. I was feeling tired and edgy. I really didn’t need my mother throwing herself into the mix.
She smiles sweetly at Ila like old friends. “I’m visiting a friend in the hospital, Kane. What else would I be doing here?”
