“Ila!? ILA!” I shook her limp form over and over, hoping for any sign of life, but there is nothing.
The dining hall erupts into chaos; the clatter of dropped plates and silverware, screams, and the pounding of feet fill the air as people attempt to flee in a panicked rush. The Elders’ desperate pleas for order punctuate the angry tones of Alpha Dean’s argument with Graham and Katie. Hannah is sobbing uncontrollably into her phone, her shoulders shaking with each choked sob.
I stand there, unable to move. Numbness consumes me as I clutch Ila to my chest, my heart pounding in my ears against the suffocating screams around me. I don’t understand what happened.
