Chapter 11 – When Lines Start to Blur 🥺

767 Words
The evening air felt different. Charlotte couldn’t explain it, but as she stepped into the venue again, something had shifted. The decorations were nearly complete, the soft glow of lights casting a warm atmosphere across the hall. Everything was falling into place. Everything except her thoughts. “You’re early.” His voice came from behind her, low and familiar. Charlotte didn’t need to turn to know it was Alexander. Somehow, she always knew when he was close. “I have work to do,” she replied, keeping her tone steady as she set her bag down. A faint chuckle followed. “Of course you do.” She turned this time, meeting his gaze. He looked… different tonight. Less guarded. Or maybe she was just noticing more than she should. “Something funny?” she asked. “Just you,” he said, stepping closer. “You act like the entire wedding depends on you.” Charlotte crossed her arms. “It does. Someone has to make sure everything doesn’t fall apart.” “And you think I’d let that happen?” There was something in his voice that made her pause. It wasn’t teasing this time. It was serious. “I think,” she said slowly, “you enjoy making things harder for me.” Alexander smirked slightly. “Maybe I just enjoy watching you handle it.” Her heart skipped, and she hated that it did. Charlotte turned away, focusing on the seating chart laid out on the table. But she could feel him behind her again, closer than before. Too close. “You changed this,” he said, glancing at the arrangement. “Yes,” she replied. “It works better this way.” “For who?” he asked. “For everyone.” He leaned in slightly, his voice lowering. “Or just for you?” Charlotte’s breath caught. She turned to respond, but suddenly they were face to face, closer than she expected. The space between them felt charged, like something unspoken was building with nowhere to go. “You’re standing too close,” she said quietly. “And you’re not moving away,” he replied. Her heart pounded. He wasn’t wrong. For a moment, neither of them moved. The world seemed to fade into the background, leaving just the two of them in the quiet glow of the hall. Then Charlotte stepped back, breaking the moment. “This isn’t a game, Alexander.” His expression softened slightly. “I know.” “Then stop acting like it is.” He studied her for a second before speaking again. “What if it’s not a game anymore?” The question hung between them. Charlotte didn’t answer. She couldn’t. Instead, she turned back to the table, pretending to adjust something that didn’t need adjusting. Her hands trembled slightly, and she pressed them against the surface to steady herself. She felt him move again, this time not as close. “Relax,” he said, though his voice had lost its usual edge. “I’m not trying to make things worse.” “That’s new,” she muttered. A small laugh escaped him. “Maybe I’m changing.” Charlotte glanced at him, skeptical. “You? Changing?” “Surprised?” “A little.” He shrugged. “You’re not exactly easy to ignore.” Her chest tightened. “Good,” she said, forcing confidence into her voice. “You shouldn’t.” Alexander’s gaze lingered on her longer than necessary, something unreadable in his eyes. “That’s the problem,” he said quietly. Silence settled between them again, but this time it felt heavier. Deeper. Charlotte turned away first, grabbing a clipboard just to have something to do. She couldn’t keep standing there, not when every second felt like it was pulling her closer to something she wasn’t ready for. “I’m done for today,” she said. “So soon?” “Yes.” She walked toward the exit, her steps steady even though her thoughts were anything but. She could feel his eyes on her again, that same pull she couldn’t escape. Just before reaching the door, she stopped. For a second, she considered leaving without another word. But instead, she turned slightly. “Try not to ruin anything while I’m gone.” A faint smirk returned to his lips. “No promises.” Charlotte shook her head, but a small smile betrayed her as she stepped out into the night. And as the door closed behind her, one thought lingered in her mind— This wasn’t just tension anymore. It was something far more dangerous.
