Chapter 12 – Almost Isn’t Enough 💙

866 Words
The venue was busier than usual. Charlotte stepped inside, instantly noticing the difference. Staff moved quickly, final adjustments being made as the wedding drew closer. Everything was almost ready. Almost. “Charlotte!” She turned at the sound of her name. A man she hadn’t seen before approached her, dressed neatly, a confident smile on his face. “I’ve heard a lot about you,” he said. “You’re the planner, right?” Charlotte nodded politely. “Yes. And you are?” “Daniel,” he replied, extending his hand. “Friend of the groom.” She shook it. “Nice to meet you.” “I have to say,” Daniel added, glancing around, “this is impressive. You’ve done an amazing job.” “Thank you,” Charlotte said, offering a small smile. “You must be exhausted,” he continued. “Can I get you a drink later? You deserve a break.” Charlotte hesitated for a second. It wasn’t unusual for guests to be friendly, but something about his tone felt… intentional. Before she could respond— “I don’t think she needs that.” The voice was cold. Charlotte didn’t have to turn. She already knew. Alexander. Daniel glanced past her, raising an eyebrow. “And you are?” “Someone who knows she’s busy,” Alexander replied, stepping closer. His presence shifted the air immediately. Charlotte exhaled quietly. “Alexander, it’s fine—” “No, it’s not,” he cut in. Daniel looked amused. “Relax, man. I was just talking.” “I can see that,” Alexander said, his jaw tightening slightly. Charlotte stepped between them. “Both of you, stop.” There was a brief silence. “I appreciate the offer,” she said to Daniel, keeping her voice calm, “but I have a lot to finish.” Daniel studied her for a moment, then smiled. “Another time, then.” “Maybe,” she replied politely. He gave Alexander one last look before walking away. The tension didn’t leave with him. Charlotte turned slowly. “What was that?” Alexander didn’t answer immediately. His gaze followed Daniel before returning to her. “You were entertaining him.” “I was being polite.” “He was flirting.” Charlotte crossed her arms. “So?” “So?” Alexander stepped closer. “You were going to say yes.” “No, I wasn’t.” “You hesitated.” Her chest tightened. “That doesn’t mean anything.” “It means enough,” he said quietly. Charlotte shook her head. “You don’t get to act like that.” “Like what?” “Like you have a say in who I talk to.” His expression hardened slightly. “Maybe I do.” The words hit harder than they should. Charlotte stared at him. “You don’t.” “Don’t I?” The space between them felt smaller again, the air thick with something neither of them could ignore. “This isn’t your business,” she said, though her voice wasn’t as steady as before. Alexander’s gaze dropped briefly to her lips before returning to her eyes. “It feels like it is.” Her breath caught. For a moment, everything else faded—the noise, the people, the movement around them. It was just the two of them again, standing too close, saying too much without actually saying it. “Alexander…” she started softly. He didn’t respond. He just stepped closer. Close enough that she could feel his breath. Close enough that if either of them moved just a little— Charlotte didn’t step back. Neither did he. “Say something,” he murmured. “I don’t know what you want me to say.” “The truth.” Her heart pounded. “You wouldn’t like it.” “Try me.” Silence stretched between them, heavy and fragile. “I don’t like how you act,” she said finally. “You’re controlling, arrogant—” “And yet you didn’t walk away.” Her words caught in her throat. Alexander’s voice softened. “That’s the part I don’t understand.” Charlotte looked at him, really looked at him this time. Not the arrogance. Not the teasing. Something else. Something real. “I don’t understand it either,” she admitted. That was all it took. He leaned in slightly. Her breath hitched. This was it. The distance between them disappeared— “Charlotte!” The moment shattered instantly. She stepped back, heart racing, turning toward the voice. One of the staff members waved her over urgently. “I need you for a second!” Charlotte blinked, trying to regain composure. “I—I’ll be right there.” She turned back to Alexander, but the moment was gone. The tension was still there, stronger than ever, but whatever had almost happened… hadn’t. “Later,” he said quietly. Charlotte nodded, though she wasn’t sure what that meant anymore. As she walked away, her heart refused to calm. Because this time, it hadn’t just been tension. It had been something real. And next time… She wasn’t sure she’d be able to stop it.
