Amelia stood frozen.
For a moment the glittering ballroom blurred around her, the laughter and applause fading into distant noise.
All she could see was him.
Alexander Kingsley.
The man was standing only a few steps away from her.
The man she had fallen asleep beside last night.
Her heart pounded violently in her chest.
“Amelia.”
Alexander’s voice was softer now.
Closer.
Her breath caught.
He saw me.
Slowly, she turned around.
Their eyes met.
The familiarity of his face struck her like a physical blow.
Strong jaw.
Dark eyes.
The same features she had traced with her fingertips only hours ago.
The same man who had kissed her goodnight.
The same man who had whispered that he loved her.
But tonight those same lips had just announced his engagement to another woman.
“Hi,” Alexander said quietly.
The word sounded absurd.
Small.
Meaningless.
Amelia let out a sharp laugh before she could stop herself.
“Hi?” she repeated.
Her voice trembled slightly.
“That’s what you’re going with?”
Alexander ran a hand through his hair.
A nervous habit she knew far too well.
“I didn’t know you were here,” he said.
Amelia stared at him.
“You didn’t know?”
She reached into her purse and pulled out the elegant invitation card.
The gold lettering shimmered under the chandelier lights.
“You mean this invitation?”
Alexander frowned.
He took the card from her hand.
As he read it, confusion slowly replaced the color in his face.
“I didn’t send this.”
“I know.”
Amelia folded her arms.
“I figured that part out.”
For a moment neither of them spoke.
The silence between them felt unbearable.
Finally, Alexander looked up.
“You weren’t supposed to find out like this.”
Amelia blinked.
Something inside her cracked.
“Find out?” she repeated softly.
“You mean find out that the man I woke up next to this morning is getting engaged tonight?”
Her voice rose slightly.
A few nearby guests turned their heads curiously.
Alexander glanced around before lowering his voice.
“Amelia, please—”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“No, don’t do that.”
“Do what?”
“Act like this is something small.”
Her chest tightened painfully.
“You slept with me last night.”
Alexander went silent.
Amelia continued, her voice trembling now.
“You held me.”
Her fingers curled into fists.
“You kissed me goodbye this morning.”
Her throat burned.
“And then you came here and got engaged to someone else?”
Alexander looked away.
“I was going to tell you.”
“When?”
She laughed bitterly.
“After the wedding?”
“That’s not fair.”
“Isn’t it?”
Amelia searched his face desperately.
Looking for something.
Anything.
A sign that this wasn’t real.
But all she saw was guilt.
“I thought you’d understand,” he said quietly.
The words felt like a slap.
“Understand?” she repeated.
Her voice was almost a whisper now.
“You think I’m standing here trying to understand why the man I love just humiliated me in front of half the city?”
Alexander stepped closer.
“You know how important this deal is.”
She stared at him.
Deal?
“Victoria’s family controls half the investors backing Kingsley Technologies,” he continued.
“If this partnership happens, the company will explode.”
Amelia felt sick.
“So that’s it?” she asked.
“You traded me for a business deal?”
“It’s not like that.”
“Then explain it to me.”
Alexander hesitated.
And that hesitation said everything.
Amelia let out a shaky breath.
“I believed in you when no one else did,” she said quietly.
Her voice was softer now.
More dangerous.
“I stayed up with you every night while you built that company.”
She gestured toward the ballroom.
“I supported you when every investor rejected you.”
Her chest tightened painfully.
“I loved you when you had nothing.”
Alexander looked genuinely ashamed now.
“Of course, that meant something to me.”
“Did it?”
“Yes.”
“Then why her?”
Alexander didn’t answer.
Instead, his gaze drifted toward the ballroom.
Amelia followed it.
Victoria Laurent stood at the center of the crowd, laughing gracefully as people congratulated her.
The massive diamond ring on her finger sparkled under the lights.
Amelia felt her stomach twist.
“So that’s the life you wanted,” she said quietly.
“It’s complicated.”
Amelia laughed again.
But there was no humor in the sound.
“No,” she said.
“It’s actually very simple.”
She looked him straight in the eyes.
“You chose.”
Alexander opened his mouth.
But before he could respond—
A smooth voice interrupted them.
“Alexander?”
Both of them turned.
Victoria Laurent was walking toward them.
Elegant.
Graceful.
Perfect.
Her long black gown shimmered as she approached.
Her smile was warm.
But her eyes were sharp.
They moved slowly between Amelia and Alexander.
“Everything alright?” she asked sweetly.
Alexander straightened immediately.
“Yes. Of course.”
Victoria stopped beside him.
Then she turned toward Amelia and extended her hand politely.
“I don’t believe we’ve met.”
Amelia looked at the offered hand for a moment before shaking it.
“Amelia Hart.”
Victoria’s eyes flickered with recognition.
“Ah,” she said softly.
Her smile deepened slightly.
“Alexander mentioned you once.”
Alexander stiffened beside her.
Victoria continued calmly.
“It’s nice to finally meet you.”
Amelia slowly pulled her hand back.
“Yes,” she said quietly.
“Very nice.”
Victoria tilted her head slightly.
“Did you enjoy the party?”
Amelia studied her carefully.
Something about the woman’s tone felt deliberate.
Calculated.
Then she remembered the invitation.
The elegant handwriting.
The gold seal.
“You sent the invitation,” Amelia said suddenly.
Victoria’s smile widened just slightly.
“Well,” she said lightly, “I thought it would be rude not to.”
Alexander turned sharply.
“You what?”
Victoria ignored him completely.
“You and Alexander were together for quite a while,” she continued smoothly.
“I thought you deserved to hear the news personally.”
The words were polite.
But they cut like knives.
So this had been intentional.
This humiliation.
This pain.
Victoria had planned it.
Alexander looked furious now.
“Victoria—”
But Amelia lifted her hand.
“It’s fine,” she said softly.
She looked directly at Victoria.
“Thank you for the invitation.”
Victoria smiled sweetly.
“You’re welcome.”
Silence stretched between the three of them.
Then Amelia looked at Alexander again.
Something inside her finally settled.
Not peace.
Not yet.
But clarity.
The man she loved had chosen ambition over her.
And he had done it without honesty.
Without courage.
Without even telling her the truth.
She straightened her shoulders.
“Well,” she said calmly.
“I should let the happy couple return to their celebration.”
Victoria’s smile brightened.
“How thoughtful.”
Amelia ignored her.
Instead, she looked at Alexander one last time.
Really looked at him.
The man she had loved.
The man she had believed in.
The man she had trusted with her heart.
And suddenly she realized something.
He wasn’t the man she thought he was.
“Goodbye, Alexander,” she said quietly.
Then she turned and walked toward the exit.
Her heart was breaking with every step.
But she didn’t stop.
Not this time.
Because the moment she stepped out of that ballroom…
She already knew one thing.
She was leaving.
