Chapter 7: The Listening Device

1519 Words
The next day, JRV LOGISTICS Praewa came to work as usual at JRV LOGISTICS, preparing meeting documents and numerous work files for the young executive. Today was another busy day, with many minor internal issues waiting for her to handle. The sound of footsteps on the marble floor made the secretary look up from the pile of documents. She gave a friendly smile to the newcomer. "Hello, Mr. Taipei, long time no see," she greeted the boss's close associate. Working with Onyx for many years had given her the chance to meet his subordinates several times. "Is Mr. Onyx available now?" "Mr. Onyx doesn't have any guests. He should be signing documents." Taipei nodded to the secretary, not paying attention to her unfashionably outdated attire. Praewa was about to inform the boss, but Taipei shook his head, signaling her to stay seated. Knock, knock. "It's Taipei." "Hmm, come in," a deep voice from inside responded. "Would you like some coffee or a snack, Mr. Taipei?" "No, thank you. I'll excuse myself." With that, the young man pushed open the door to the large office, and Praewa returned her attention to the pile of documents. "Did you find anything?" Onyx leaned back in his chair and asked immediately upon seeing his close associate. "As far as I've checked, I haven't found any irregularities among our subordinates." "..." "I've had someone keep a distant watch on the subordinates responsible for deliveries, to see if they're secretly contacting anyone behind our backs." "..." Onyx sighed deeply. Yesterday, he had already checked the surveillance cameras and saw no suspicious behavior. But deep down, he believed there must be someone inside secretly passing information to the enemy. The room fell into silence. Taipei stood still in front of the desk, allowing Onyx to ponder. The young mafia leader rested his chin on his hand, twirling a pen in his other hand, gazing around the room thoughtfully. He felt a twinge of suspicion when he noticed the angle of the low table in front of the sofa had shifted from the previous day. With an IQ higher than average, the young man could remember small details accurately, but initially, he hadn't noticed because he wasn't paying attention. He squinted, staring at it intently, causing Taipei, who was standing there, to look in the same direction as his boss, but he couldn't grasp the young man's thoughts. Onyx moved his chair and walked straight to the low table to look for any irregularities. "In three days, we'll change the location for the next shipment. Yesterday's incident really upset the client." Taipai frowned in confusion at first, but when he saw his boss's gaze, he began to understand, because the next meeting was actually scheduled for next week. Taipai began to walk around the room, inspecting items as he responded to his boss. "Where to?" "Let's go with the xx riverbank outside the city." "This shipment is quite large; we should prepare more guards." The two men walked around the room, picking up and examining items, from flower vases to shelves, and behind picture frames, until Taipai reached the old document shelf on the other side of the office, pulling out files and placing them on the floor for thorough inspection. His fingers brushed against something on the back of a file, which he quietly raised to show his boss. "Sending too many people might raise suspicion. Select only the best 20." Onyx's voice remained calm, but his eyes blazed with anger beneath his glasses when he saw the small bug attached to the back of the document file. His strong hand gripped the file tightly, his arm veins bulging, clearly showing his current mood. This revealed the traitor was closer than he had anticipated. "Get everything ready for 10 PM at the xx riverbank. Don't let too many people know." With that, Onyx crushed the tiny bug in his hand, destroying it completely. Taipai swallowed hard in fear, realizing that someone was daring enough to plant a bug in the young mafia's private office. "..." The tall figure said nothing more, casting a sharp glance at his confidant before striding past his subordinates. Taipai understood the implication that they would continue the conversation elsewhere. Bang! "Where is the president going? There's a meeting in 5 minutes," Praewa quickly stood up, calling after the tall figure as he walked briskly out of the room. The dangerous aura made the secretary's hair stand on end. "..." The young man remained silent, not responding, causing the woman to direct a questioning look at his close subordinate instead. "Uh... well" "The boss has some business. You can attend the meeting in his place, Ms. Praewa," he said, bowing his head in farewell to her and following the young president out. Praewa stood agape, bewildered, until she regained her composure, by which time her boss had vanished into the elevator, leaving all responsibilities to the secretary alone. "Oh, what is this? Praewa has to take care of everything again!" The small frame muttered in frustration, quickly rummaging through the necessary documents and hurrying to the meeting room. Despite being exasperated with her boss, considering her six-figure salary, she ultimately had no choice but to attend the meeting without the company's president. Onyx didn't go far; he just sat in his private car parked in front of the company. He grabbed the expensive laptop beside the seat and furiously typed to search through past video files. A cold aura intermittently emanated from his muscular frame, making Taipei and another subordinate too afraid to say anything, fearing they might provoke their boss into an outburst. Onyx was seething. The fact that a listening device was planted in his private office was an unforgivable insult. He continued to scan through the images, clenching and unclenching his fists repeatedly. His anger began to rise. Even though there were cameras in the room, the spot where the culprit planted the listening device was a blind spot the surveillance cameras couldn't capture. Nevertheless, he managed to get a list of some suspects. A housekeeper had accidentally bumped the reception table, causing it to shift from its original position. That incident made him suspicious and led to the discovery of the hidden item. "Find out the information and bring these two in for questioning." Onyx turned the laptop screen to show Taipei, who was sitting in the front seat. The faces of three individuals appeared on the screen, two of whom were housekeepers who had cleaned his room. "And then..." "I'll handle this one myself," Onyx interjected. His handsome yet sinister face twisted into a menacing smile as he spoke through gritted teeth, pulling the laptop back onto his lap. He stared at the image of a woman with disheveled hair and thick glasses, with a strange, inexplicable feeling surfacing intermittently in his chest. Praewa slumped onto her desk in exhaustion after having to attend a meeting in place of her boss for nearly three hours and then dealing with the remaining stack of documents. Her energy was nearly depleted. She glanced at the small clock on her desk and felt disheartened when she saw how much time had passed since the end of the workday. She stretched slightly to shake off the fatigue, read through the documents in front of her for a while longer, and then glanced at the door to Onyx's office. The small figure decided to push the door open and walked straight to the young man's desk. The spacious room still held a slight chill from the air conditioner. The darkness made the room feel eerie when she was alone. She used the light streaming in from the open door to go through the files on the desk, opening them one by one. While she was engrossed in the numbers, two large men silently stepped in from behind. Before Phraewa realized she was no longer alone, a large black cloth bag was already over her head. "Ahhh! Who! Let me go!" She screamed at the top of her lungs in shock, her heart pounding wildly in her chest. She struggled and resisted with all her might, but her body was tightly restrained. Though she couldn't see, she sensed that the assailant was much larger than her. Her small hands clawed at the arm encircling her waist, jabbing with her elbow and kicking with her feet at the large body behind her in an attempt to escape. But it seemed she couldn't make him flinch at all. All she could hear was the heavy breathing close to her ear. "Let me go now! Help! Someone, please help!" Phraewa shouted, hoping a security guard would hear, but the other party didn't let her scream for long. Thud! She instantly lost consciousness when a hand struck the back of her neck with full force. She would have collapsed if not for the strong hands supporting her. He crouched, slung her unconscious body over his shoulder, and walked out of the office, with the other man closing the door behind them. They both disappeared without anyone noticing.
