The following day, with the sun high in the sky, Layken finished his chores in record time and escorted Sara Beth to the pickup for the drive into Everton to get some necessities for Tab.
He shot a sideways glance as he turned the key and started the engine. “You look very pretty today, Sara Beth. I think mothering Tab agrees with you.”
Her cheeks turned pink, adding to her glow. “He’s a sweet boy, and I won’t deny he’s wiggled his way into my heart. But I’ll never replace his mother.”
“No, of course not.” He nosed the pickup toward the blacktop road. “It’s apparent that having him around agrees with you. And you trust him, or you would never have left Cuddles with him today.”
She chuckled. “He adores Cuddles. I know he’ll take care of him.” She clenched her hands together
