Chloe sat on the edge of Ethan’s plush sofa, her hands trembling as the weight of her family’s struggles bore down on her. The air between them was charged, heavy with unspoken tension. Ethan stood a few feet away, his arms crossed, a conflicted look etched onto his face.
“Thank you,” Chloe murmured, her voice barely audible. She felt small and vulnerable,he stared at her confused not knowing what to say.
Ethan moved closer, kneeling in front of her so their eyes met. “Chloe, you’re stronger than you think. Don’t let Nathan or anyone else make you feel powerless.”
His words struck a chord, and she felt a tear slip down her cheek. Without thinking, she leaned forward, seeking solace in the warmth of his gaze. Their faces were mere inches apart now, and she noticed the way his breath hitched.
Ethan hesitated, his hand hovering near hers before he finally gave in to the moment. He cupped her cheek gently, his thumb brushing away her tear. “You deserve better,” he said, his voice low and rough.
Before Chloe could process his words, their lips met in a soft, tentative kiss. It was as if the room faded away, leaving only the two of them in a whirlwind of emotions. The kiss quickly deepened, fueled by a combination of desire and the need to escape the pain that plagued them both.
Chloe’s hands found their way to his shoulders, clinging to him as if he were the only solid thing in her crumbling world. Ethan pulled her closer, his arms wrapping around her we kiss grew more fervent. Their breaths mingled, their heartbeats racing in unison.
The intensity of the moment consumed them, and Chloe felt as though time itself had stopped. The outside world, with all its problems and betrayals, ceased to exist. There was only Ethan—the man who had saved her, who had seen her at her lowest, and who now held her as if she were the most precious thing in the world.
But just as quickly as the kiss had begun, Ethan suddenly pulled away. His breathing was ragged, his hands still resting on her waist but his eyes filled with conflict. Chloe blinked, her lips still tingling from the kiss, as she tried to comprehend his abrupt withdrawal.
“Ethan?” she asked, her voice shaky.
He stood up, putting some distance between them as he ran a hand through his hair. “I shouldn’t have done that,” he muttered, more to himself than to her.
Ethan turned to face her, his expression pained. “Chloe, in as much as I feel something for you, I can’t. I can’t take the case.”
Her brow furrowed, confusion and hurt flashing across her face. “Why not? You’re one of the best lawyers in the city. You could help me—help my family. Why won’t you do it?”
Ethan exhaled heavily, his shoulders slumping. “It’s not about whether I can or not. It’s about my family. My sister, Sophia… she loves Nathan.I know he's an asshole but she’s been through so much because of him. The only time anyone in my family tried to intervene in her relationship with him, she ran away. It nearly destroyed her.”
Chloe frowned, trying to process what he was saying. “But Nathan is ruining my life. He’s ruining my family’s life. How can you stand by and let that happen?”
Ethan’s jaw tightened, and he looked away, guilt evident in his posture. “I’m not standing by. I’m trying to do what I think is right for everyone involved. My sister’s happiness matters, Chloe. She loves Nathan, and she’s convinced he’s the one for her. If I take this case, it’ll create a rift in my family that we may never recover from. I can’t do that to her.”
Chloe’s eyes filled with tears, and she shook her head. “So, you’re just going to let Nathan destroy innocent people’s lives because your sister loves him? That’s your justification?”
Ethan flinched at her words but didn’t back down. “It’s not that simple, Chloe. You don’t understand what it’s like. My mother once tried to separate Sophia and Nathan. My sister packed her things and disappeared for weeks. We thought we’d lost her. After that, we all promised not to interfere in her relationship as long as she was happy. I’m not breaking that promise.”
Chloe stood, her emotions boiling over. “And what about me? What about my family? Are we supposed to suffer because your sister can’t see Nathan for who he really is?”
Ethan’s gaze softened, but he didn’t waver. “I wish I could do more for you, Chloe. I really do. But this… I just can’t.”
Chloe’s shoulders slumped in defeat, her tears spilling freely now. “So, that’s it? You’re just going to walk away?”
Ethan took a step closer, reaching out as if to comfort her, but stopped himself. “I’m sorry,” he said, his voice barely above a whisper.
Chloe stared at him, her heart breaking all over again. She had been so close to believing he could be her savior, her lifeline. But now, she realized she was truly on her own.
Without another word she picked her things and left his home,
