Chapter 1

Damon Blackwell had been trapped in a coma for two months after a terrible car accident, leaving him in a vegetative state. After countless renowned doctors failed to wake him up, his father, Theodore, turned to a psychic. The psychic claimed that if Damon married the daughter of the Rowan family, she would bring him good fortune and help him regain consciousness. Without hesitation, Theodore used the Blackwell family's overwhelming influence to pressure the Rowan family into handing over their daughter. The news spread like wildfire among the elite circles. All the other heiresses were waiting to watch Juliette Rowan make a fool of herself. After all, everyone knew the Rowan family had only one daughter, Juliette. My parents were frantic. They couldn't bring themselves to let their precious daughter, the one they had spoiled rotten, marry a man lying unconscious in a hospital bed, even if the Blackwell family's wealth was beyond imagination. I stared at my reflection in the mirror and counted silently. Three, two, one. The door burst open, and my brother, Elliot, stormed in. "Amelia, you're the real daughter by blood. This marriage should be yours. Why should Juliette have to marry that useless man?" My parents rushed in right after him. From the worry written all over their faces, it was obvious they had come straight from Juliette's room. The moment the news came out that the Blackwell family wanted to marry the Rowan family's daughter, Juliette had refused at all costs. She locked herself in her bedroom and threatened to starve herself. My parents had nearly lost their minds and spent ages coaxing her into eating some oatmeal. They couldn't bear to sacrifice Juliette, so they came after me instead. I calmly looked straight into Elliot's furious eyes. "Have you forgotten something? When I was brought back to this family, Mom was the one who said Juliette was the only daughter of the Rowan family. She even announced in public that I had no right to inherit anything. The Blackwell family wants the Rowan family's daughter. If a daughter you already erased from the family records marries into their house, aren't you worried Mr. Blackwell will come after you?" Although Juliette was known to everyone as the Rowan family's daughter, she wasn't their biological child. After I was kidn*pped years ago, my parents adopted Juliette from an orphanage. For years, they raised her like their own flesh and blood and treasured her. The outside world had always believed she was their biological child. As for me, I grew up in the slums. When my parents finally found me when I was 18, they didn't want Juliette to feel threatened, so they told everyone that I was their adopted daughter. Juliette remained the Rowan family's only heiress. The day I returned home, Juliette held my hand and gave me a tour of the villa, pretending to welcome me with open arms. My heart, which had been uneasy in that unfamiliar place, finally settled down. Before I could even smile, we passed the swimming pool, and she suddenly stumbled and fell into the water. My mother didn't hesitate for a second. She jumped in and pulled Juliette out. Wrapped in a towel, Juliette threw herself into my mother's arms and cried like she had been wronged beyond repair. "Amelia said I stole her life. She hates me so much that she wants me dead." My mother hugged her tightly, soothing her. Then she turned toward me, her eyes filled with disappointment and anger. "How could you be so cruel? You don't look anything like my daughter. No wonder you grew up in the slums!" She didn't believe me no matter what I said. From that moment on, I became the outsider while Juliette remained the only princess of the Rowan family. In my previous life, they had forced me to marry Damon in Juliette's place too. Devastated by their endless favoritism, I had left home that night, bought a ticket to another country, and escaped from everything. But this time, I wouldn't let my emotions get the better of me. My remarks made them hesitate. My parents stayed quiet for a long time, unable to find the right words. Elliot let out a mocking laugh. "So now you're blaming Mom for ignoring you all these years? Amelia, how did I end up with such a petty sister? Compared to Juliette, you really don't seem like one of us at all!" In the past, his words would have shattered me. But now, they didn't mean a thing. I took a sip of coffee and said calmly, "Dad, Mom, I'm willing to marry into the Blackwell family."
