I looked at my mother in disbelief.
"I didn't do anything wrong. Why should I apologize to her?"
"You embarrassed Juliette in front of everyone and made her the target of everyone's gossip. You even spilled wine on her and ruined her dress. How could you still claim you did nothing wrong? Amelia, don't be so heartless."
Elliot stormed into the room, furious. He had just heard about what happened after coming home from work and rushed over to demand an explanation.
"I didn't do anything wrong!"
He let out a cold laugh and grabbed my arm.
"You're going whether you like it or not."
His grip tightened around my arm. I frowned and snapped at him.
"Elliot, I'm about to become Damon Blackwell's wife. I'm no longer someone you can bully. You'd better think twice before touching me."
His hand froze.
After a moment, he reluctantly let go. Then his gaze shifted toward my housekeeper, Jane.
He suddenly reached out and grabbed Jane by the throat.
"You're going to marry into the Blackwell family, so of course I won't touch you. But her? I can still do whatever I want to her, right?"
Elliot showed no mercy. Jane's face quickly turned red as she struggled, desperately looking at me for help.
He knew exactly where my weakness was.
"Fine. I'll go."
My nails dug into my palms as I followed Elliot forward.
Mark was still by Juliette's bedside, carefully applying ointment to her injuries. Even a slight frown from her was enough to make him look heartbroken.
I swallowed my humiliation, forced down the hatred surging inside me, and pushed my tears back before whispering,
"I'm sorry."
Juliette's lips curled into a smug smile. She leaned close to my ear and whispered,
"See? So what if you're the real heiress? Don't you still have to bow your head and apologize to me? Do you understand now? In this family, I'll take everything that belongs to you, piece by piece."
She leaned comfortably against Mark's arms, looking victorious. Just then, a loud commotion came from outside. The servants excitedly announced that people from the Blackwell family had arrived with wedding gifts.
The gifts filled the entire courtyard and stretched all the way into the living room. There were so many that the room was practically overflowing.
Juliette had lived a life of luxury for more than a decade, but even she rarely saw such extravagant gifts. She shot me a jealous look before speaking in a bitter tone.
"You really are lucky. These priceless wedding gifts prove how much the Blackwell family values you. I guess I'll never have this kind of fortune."
The moment my mother noticed the disappointment on her face, she immediately felt sorry for her.
"Oh, silly, we would never make you feel little when you got married. If you like these things, I'll have Amelia leave them all behind for you. How about that?"
Juliette instantly smiled again. The way she looked at me became even more arrogant.
"Never mind. Damon is only a useless man. If Amelia had a child to rely on someday, that would be different. Otherwise, she'll need these things to secure her future. How could I take them from her? But I really wonder, how she's going to have children with a vegetable?"
Juliette blinked at me with an innocent expression. I clenched my teeth and refused to give her the reaction she wanted.
She thought my future would be miserable, but she didn't know compared to the Blackwell family, this home was a nightmare.
Damon and I quickly completed our marriage registration. Since Damon was in a vegetative state, there was no wedding ceremony, but the Blackwell family still sent a custom-made wedding dress. On the day I left, I would wear it, and the Blackwell family would send a car to pick me up.
My mother had originally promised to accompany me to the Blackwell family on my first day there, so I wouldn't have to face everything alone.
But right before we were about to leave, one housekeeper rushed over, saying Juliette suddenly felt extremely anxious and uncomfortable.
My mother didn't hesitate for even a second before lifting her skirt and hurrying away.
Jane stood up for me, her voice slightly trembling.
"Miss Rowan, how could Mrs. Rowan leave you alone on your wedding day?"
I looked at my mother's worried back as she walked away and swallowed the bitterness rising in my throat.
"Let's go. We shouldn't waste any more time."
I had gotten used to this kind of neglect long ago. Yet every time it happened, why did my heart still ache?
After arriving at the Blackwell family, the unfamiliar surroundings gave me no chance to dwell on my sadness.
Before entering Damon's bedroom, my heart had been racing. I didn't know how to face a husband who was unconscious, and I had no idea what kind of life awaited me.
The only thing I knew was that I wanted revenge.
But when I opened the door, the room was empty. Damon wasn't there.
While I was still trying to figure out what was happening, a low chuckle came from behind me. I turned around, and a clean cedar scent brushed past me.
The Damon everyone believed was trapped in a deep coma was standing right in front of me. His complexion was healthy, his cheeks carried a warm color, and he was smiling at me.
When he looked down at me, his eyes seemed to hold countless shards of golden light, bright enough to leave me stunned.
Then he pulled me into his arms.
"Thank goodness, I finally found you!"
