Not all I wished for

834 Words
The sun was beginning to set, casting a warm golden glow over the quiet suburban neighborhood. The air was filled with a sense of anticipation, as if something extraordinary was about to happen. But amidst the serene atmosphere, a feeling of unease settled in the heart of a young girl named Quinley. Her mother, a vibrant woman with a contagious smile, had left the house hours ago after they had packed away the groceries. However, as the minutes turned into hours, Quinley's worry grew. She couldn't help but pace back and forth, her mind racing with unanswered questions. Why was her mother taking so long? And why did this situation feel so familiar, as if she had experienced it before? Finally, unable to bear the silence any longer, Quinley decided to retreat upstairs to her room. She needed a moment to gather her thoughts and regain her composure. As she entered her sanctuary, her eyes fell upon a her once neatly wrapped birthday gift, sitting on the counter. A surge of excitement coursed through her veins, momentarily distracting her from her mother's disappearance. With trembling hands, Quinley opened her book and took the pen once again. The night before when she blew out the candles on her birthday cake gave her a mixture of awe and confusion that washed over her as she realized that her desires had somehow manifested themselves into reality. However small the list, it was growing. As she flipped through the pages of the book, she couldn't shake the feeling that something was missing. Taking a deep breath, Quinley stepped out onto the rooftop, sitting down, leaning against the window frame. The cool breeze gently tousled her hair as she surveyed the street below. Her eyes scanned the row of parked cars, desperately searching for the one she had yearned for—a symbol of freedom and independence. But it was nowhere to be found. A sense of disappointment washed over her, threatening to dampen her spirits. She wondered why her wish hadn't been fully granted. Was it a sign? Or was it simply a coincidence? Quinley couldn't help but feel overwhelmed by the inexplicable events unfolding before her. As the evening wore on, Quinley's anxiety mounted. She couldn't bear the thought of her mother being in danger, lost or even worse has she just up and left. With a determined resolve, she grabbed her coat and hurriedly made her way downstairs. The front door creaked open, and Quinley stepped out into the fading light, determined to find her missing mother. The streets were eerily quiet as Quinley ventured into the night, her heart pounding in her chest. Every passing car made her heart leap, hoping to catch a glimpse of her mother's familiar face. With each step, she retraced the path she thought her mother had taken earlier that day, trying to piece together the puzzle that had suddenly consumed her life. Hours turned into an eternity as Quinley tirelessly searched, her mind filled with worry and fear. But just when she was about to lose hope, a familiar screech echoed through the silent night. Quinley's heart skipped a beat as she turned towards the sound, her eyes widening in disbelief. There, in the distance, was her mother and she was in a car, slowly making its way towards her. Relief flooded over Quinley, washing away the anxiety that had plagued her. As the car came to a stop, her mother emerged, wearing a smile that could light up the darkest of nights. With tears streaming down her face, Quinley rushed towards her mother, enveloping her in a tight embrace. In that moment, all the questions and uncertainties seemed to fade away. The lottery ticket her mother held in her hand earlier was more than enough to buy a car and a few other surprises. As they stood there, wrapped in each other's arms, Quinley couldn't help but marvel at the strange series of events that had unfolded. It was a reminder that life was full of unexpected twists and turns, and sometimes, the things we wish for may not come in the exact form we envision. But what truly mattered at that moment was the strength of their bond, which had withstood the test of uncertainty and fear. Together, they drove back towards the house. Hand in hand, ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead. And as they entered the warmth and safety of their home, Quinley couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude. Gratitude for her mother's safe return, and gratitude for the power of love and hope that had guided her through the darkest of moments. She went back upstairs and wrote about the day once again… Journal Entry 2 I don't think my heart could withstand losing my mother too, if anything, I've learned the most valuable gift is her and her love. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see my Dad but he made his choices and I hold nothing against him.
