ADELINE’S POV He kept standing and staring at me without moving like he just saw a ghost and I couldn’t help but feel uncomfortable as his gaze was all over me. “It’s really you…” he said again, guilt flashing across his face and I couldn’t help but frown. “I have no idea what you’re talking about, Mr. Hartley,” I replied, trying to keep my voice calm. “Madam Brown asked me to fill in for the nanny position. The doorman directed me here.” “Mr. Hartley?” I called when he didn’t respond and he seemed to snap out of whatever trance he was in. “Oh… I’m sorry about that.” He paused, still staring. “Don’t you remember me at all? Eight years ago?” I stiffened. “Look, Mr. Hartley,” I said carefully, “I think you’ve made a mistake. I’ve never met you before. And I don’t understand why you’re looking at me like… like you’ve been searching for me all these years.” His expression faltered. “You really don’t remember, Adeline?” he asked softly, reaching for my hands which I pulled away immediately. “I only came here for an interview, not this,” I said, my voice firm. “Please keep your boundaries.” “Oh… I’m sorry,” he said quickly, taking a step back. “I must have mistaken you for someone else.” “Seems so, sir,” I replied. He led me to the living room and despite everything, I couldn’t help but admire how breathtaking the house is. “Have your sit” he said, pulling me out of my thoughts. “Madam Brown only asked me to fill in for her as a nanny here but she didn’t give me the full details of how everything is.” I said as I took a sit “I believe Madam Brown must have chosen you for a reason, I don’t think I need to interview you” he said “You pass” he said and I couldn’t hold on to my excitement anymore and I jumped up and shouted. “Yay!” I shouted, jumping to my feet and spinning around happily, completely forgetting where I was and unaware of his gaze on me. His gaze lingered on me again… longer this time. Not the kind of look you give a stranger, but the kind you give someone you’re trying to remember. “I’m sorry, " I said when I finally regained my senses. “I couldn’t hold in my happiness, honestly “Thank you so much, sir. I won’t disappoint you,” I said, trying to sound professional despite the excitement bubbling inside me. “It’s okay” I think you have a lot of things to learn and where should I start from?” “You can start from anywhere, trust me I’m a very smart lady and I can comprehend anything you say.” “Your duties aren’t too complicated,” he continued. “You’ll be taking care of my son.” I blinked. “Your… son?” “Yes.” “Your job is to be a nanny to Oliver, my seven year old son, my mother has always been taking care of him but she has been out of the country and since then Madam Brown has taken over and now she’s resigning due to a personal reason.” He paused for a moment. “I don’t know why Madam Brown chose you but you must have some potential and that’s why I gave you the job so please don’t disappoint me” he added. “I promise not to disappoint you but can I see your son and when should I start the job? Moreover, how much will I be paid in a month? “Oliver is currently in school, and you will meet him when he gets back,” he said. “As for your salary, you’ll be well taken care of. Madam Brown will brief you on the rest before she leaves.” “You can start working here tomorrow” he added. “You’ll will staying here.” I blinked. “Staying…here?” “Yes. It’s part of the job.” “But I have three part-time jobs,” I said quickly. “Madam Brown didn’t mention anything about staying here.” “You can choose between this and your part-time jobs,” he said calmly. “You’ll be paid two thousand dollars a month.” “What?” I jumped to my feet again. “Two thousand dollars?” I didn’t even hesitate. “I’m in!” I said quickly. “I don’t need to think about it.” “Alright then,” he said. “I don’t think there’s anything else to discuss.” He said and left. I let out a small breath after he left, my excitement slowly settling… but that strange feeling still lingered. Why did it feel like I had just stepped into something bigger than a simple job? “Come with me, Adeline ” I turned to see Madam Brown approaching with a gentle smile. “Madam Brown, how come you are here?” I asked giving her a hug. “How come you are here? I wasn’t expecting you to be here. “Boss called me and asked me to show you around and explain everything to you in detail to avoid unnecessary drama” she replied. “Ohh” I said She nodded warmly. “I’ll show you around. As we walked through the house, she explained a few things, Oliver’s routine, meal times, his preferences, but honestly, my mind kept drifting back to him. The way he looked at me, said my name, like he knew me, I could see the guilt in his eyes. “This will be your room,” Madam Brown said, opening the door. I stepped inside and paused. The room was beautiful. Clean, spacious, and more comfortable than anything I had ever lived in. “Wow… thank you,” I said sincerely. “You’re welcome,” she replied. Then her expression softened slightly. “Oliver is a good boy. Quiet… but very observant.” “I understand,” I said. She studied me for a moment, like she wanted to say something else. But instead, she just smiled. “I trust you” she finally said. “Should I wait till Oliver arrives from school before leaving? You know I wasn’t informed about staying here before so I haven’t prepared” I asked ““You should meet him first. But… he’s a handful sometimes,” she said lightly. “Don’t take it personally if he tests you.” But I’m sure you will enjoy the time you spend with him” she replied. Her warning made me curious. I followed her down the hall, wondering how a seven-year-old could be a challenge. When Oliver arrived home, he was exactly what she described… and more. His eyes narrowed as soon as he saw me, and he crossed his arms. “You’re the new nanny?” he asked, his voice sharp and wary. “Yes… I’m Adeline,” I said, kneeling slightly to meet his gaze. “I’ll be taking care of you from now on. I hope we can be friends.” He scoffed and turned slightly away, muttering, “I don’t need a nanny.” I blinked. “Oh… okay. Well… I’ll just do my best to help you, then,” I said, forcing a smile. Liam, meanwhile, seemed determined to make me fail before I even started. But im not the type to give up like that not when I will be paid two thousand dollars monthly. “How about this Liam, let me work for two weeks straight and if you still don’t like me then I will go” I said “I’m sure you won’t regret this because you asked for it,” he said in a sharp tone. “I won't, “ I replied. “Since it’s like this, I think you should know the rules.” Rules? “My rules.” I raised a brow. “Alright…let’s hear them.” “Rule number one: Don’t touch my things.” “Rule number two: Don’t enter my room without knocking.” “Rule number three: Don’t tell me what to do.” I blinked. This kid… “And rule number four,” he added, his voice dropping slightly, “don’t try to act like my mom.” That one hit differently and the air changed. “I won’t,” I said softly. His expression hardened again. “I hate it when women get close to my dad,” he said coldly. “My dad belongs to my mom. The moment you break the rules… you’re out.” “I agree,” I smiled. From the corner of my eye, I saw Mr. Hartley standing in the doorway, watching silently. There was a glint of warmth in his gaze, only a faint flicker of… something I couldn’t read. I’m determined to get this job no matter what even if this little devil is going to show me hell because the money is definitely not going to waste. “You won’t last long” “I will,” I said, smiling. “Let’s see” Perfect. This was going to be… interesting.
