Lyra Kael didn’t slow down at all while carrying me through the hallway. I tried not to look at his face again because every time I did, my chest tightened in a way I couldn’t explain. The guards we passed looked surprised but didn’t say anything. They stared for a second then bowed their heads quickly. I turned my face away, embarrassed that anyone was seeing me like this. Again. He pushed open a large door at the end of another hallway and stepped outside. Warm air brushed across my skin and the fresh scent of flowers filled my nose before I even saw anything. When he lowered me to my feet, I stared straight ahead. The garden stretched wide, full of every kind of flower I could think of. Bright colors everywhere and soft grass that looked like no one had walked on it for a long time.
