I stood frozen in front of Maris and Zachary, my breath shallow as Maris’ piercing gaze bore into me. I refused to meet her eyes, knowing exactly what was coming. Before I could react, a sharp sting exploded across my face as her slap sent me stumbling backward. I clutched my stomach instinctively, gasping.
"Mom!" Zachary’s voice rang out as he rushed to steady me. His hands gripped my arms tightly, fury lacing his words. "What the hell are you doing?"
