Episode 2: The Day They Let Go

1106 Words
Three weeks after the ridiculous promise... Life at Brookshire University had become a whirlwind of deadlines, practical exams, farewell parties, and graduation preparations. The campus buzzed with excitement. For most students, graduation marked the beginning of their dreams. For Adrian Carter and Ethan Brooks... It was the beginning of goodbye. --- The university auditorium echoed with applause as the dean concluded another rehearsal for graduation. Students poured out in groups, laughing and taking pictures. Adrian, dressed in a simple white T-shirt beneath a denim jacket and black jeans, leaned against the hallway wall while scrolling absentmindedly through his phone. A loud voice interrupted his thoughts. "Adrian!" He looked up. A middle-aged man wearing an expensive tailored suit strode toward him, followed by two assistants carrying folders. "Mr. Harrison?" The man smiled professionally before extending a hand. "I'm glad I found you." Adrian shook it. "What brings you here?" "I've been trying to reach you." "My phone has been off." "I noticed." Mr. Harrison handed him a business card. "I'm a talent manager." Adrian frowned. "I know." "I represent several actors." "I know." "And after seeing your audition tape..." He smiled. "...I'd like to sign you." Adrian froze. "My... audition?" "The one you secretly submitted six months ago." Adrian blinked. He had almost forgotten about it. It had been a random dare from one of his classmates. He never expected anyone to actually respond. "I..." "You have potential." Mr. Harrison continued. "Natural expressions." "Excellent screen presence." "And most importantly..." "You make people look." He paused. "Our agency wants you." Adrian stood speechless. "This could change your life." --- Meanwhile... Ethan was inside the university medical laboratory. His white lab coat fluttered slightly as he organized specimens under the supervision of Professor Lewis. "You've received another recommendation." Ethan looked up. "Another one?" The professor nodded proudly. "Saint Matthew Children's Hospital." Ethan's eyes widened. "The residency program?" "They personally requested you." Ethan couldn't believe it. The hospital accepted only a handful of graduates every year. It was his dream. His hands trembled slightly. "When do I begin?" "In two months." Professor Lewis smiled warmly. "You've earned it." --- That evening... The sky glowed orange as the sun slowly disappeared beyond the campus lake. Adrian sat beneath their favorite oak tree. The folded promise rested in his hands. He unfolded it. The ink had already begun fading. He smiled. "So we're really graduating." A familiar voice answered behind him. "We are." Ethan walked over carrying two cups of coffee. "The usual?" Adrian accepted one. "My hero." "You say that every time." "Because it's true." They sat together in comfortable silence. Finally... Adrian spoke. "I got an offer today." Ethan turned. "For what?" "Acting." Ethan's face brightened immediately. "Adrian!" "That's amazing!" "You actually got in?" Adrian nodded. "They want me to move to the city after graduation." Ethan smiled proudly. "I knew you'd make it." "You never doubted me." "Never." Adrian looked away. "What about you?" "I got accepted." "Accepted where?" "Saint Matthew Children's Hospital." Adrian's eyes nearly popped out. "No way!" Ethan laughed. "Way." Without thinking... Adrian threw his arms around Ethan. "You genius!" Ethan laughed as he hugged him back. "Congratulations." "You too." For a brief moment... Neither of them let go. The world around them disappeared. It was just the two of them beneath the old tree. Then... Reality returned. They slowly stepped apart. Adrian scratched the back of his neck awkwardly. "So..." "So..." "We're both leaving." Ethan nodded. "Looks like it." Neither of them knew what to say next. --- Graduation arrived faster than expected. Caps flew into the air. Families cried. Friends embraced. Hundreds of cameras flashed across the university lawn. Adrian and Ethan stood together in their graduation gowns, taking what felt like hundreds of pictures. "This one!" "No, this angle!" "Smile!" "Adrian, stop making weird faces!" "I'm photogenic." "You're impossible." "I'm unforgettable." Ethan smiled. "You really are." They laughed. Neither realizing how much those words would hurt years later. --- The celebration continued late into the evening. Music filled the campus. Students danced. Some cried. Others exchanged gifts. Adrian and Ethan slipped away from the crowd one last time. Back to the oak tree. "This place is going to miss us," Adrian said quietly. Ethan nodded. "So will I." Adrian turned toward him. "We're not saying goodbye." "No." "We'll call." "Every week." "We'll visit." "Definitely." "We'll stay best friends." "For life." Adrian held out his fist. "For life?" Ethan bumped it gently. "For life." --- The following morning... Life moved faster than either of them expected. Adrian's agency immediately flew him overseas for months of intensive acting training. Ethan began preparing for his residency, where eighteen-hour shifts quickly became normal. The first week... They texted every day. The second week... Only at night. The third... Every few days. Then once a week. Then... "I'll call tomorrow." Tomorrow became next week. Next week became next month. Months quietly turned into years. Neither intended to let the friendship fade. Life simply kept getting in the way. --- Ten Years Later... Camera flashes exploded across the red carpet. "Adrian!" "This way!" "One more picture!" "Smile!" Thousands of fans screamed as thirty-year-old Adrian Carter stepped out of a sleek black luxury car wearing an impeccably tailored charcoal suit. He smiled effortlessly. The smile that had made him one of the country's biggest actors. The smile magazines called irresistible. The smile directors paid millions for. But the moment the cameras turned away... The smile disappeared. His manager walked beside him. "Happy birthday." Adrian gave a tired nod. "Thirty already." "You're getting old." "Don't remind me." "Big plans tonight?" Adrian shrugged. "Sleep." His manager laughed. "Your fans think you'll be celebrating with some mystery lover." "I don't have one." "Exactly why the rumors exist." Adrian simply smiled faintly. No one knew... Behind the glamorous life... Behind the awards... Behind the fame... He went home every night to an empty apartment. Far across the city... Inside the bright pediatric wing of Saint Matthew Children's Hospital... Dr. Ethan Brooks knelt beside a little girl holding a teddy bear. "Does it hurt here?" The child nodded. Ethan smiled gently. "Then we'll make it better together." The little girl smiled through her tears. To every child in the hospital... Dr. Ethan Brooks was their hero. To every parent... He was the doctor who never gave up. But when his shift finally ended close to midnight... He walked into an empty apartment. Placed his keys on the table. Loosened his tie. And quietly whispered to himself... "Happy birthday, Adrian." He stared out the window for a long moment before softly adding, "I hope you're happy."
