The gain or loss

As soon as the three people reach home, the change into their pajamas and sit in the lounge. Rajveer gets up from the sofa after some time and says: “Today was a very busy day. I am so tired. Does anyone need tea?” Both people raise their hands in the air and say: “Me.” Rajveer smiles at the two people and moves his head as to say that these guys will never grow up. While Rajveer is in the kitchen, Ranveer says to Simon: “Thank you so much.”

Simon is confused as she asks: “For what?”

Ranveer: “For taking this decision. I know it will not be easy for you after all that happened ages ago, but I think this is the biggest and the best step that you have taken.”

Simon: “I do want kids, but I know he wants them more than anything. He has been talking about having kids since the day we decided to be in a relationship. He loves kids. But from that day onwards, he never talked about that. Sometimes I wonder what I did to deserve this guy.”

Ranveer: “He is a gem.”

Simon: “The most precious one.”

Ranveer: “I am so happy for you two.”

Simon: “When are you going to talk to him?”

Ranveer: “About what?”

Simon: “We both know what I am talking about. Today, Rajinder’s death has made us all think about life in a different way and I think he loves you two more than anything. He will understand. You must talk to him soon otherwise I will do that.”

Ranveer: “I will talk to him. Give me a few more days.”

Simon: “No more days. You must talk to him today. Otherwise, I will talk to him in the morning.”

Ranveer sighs in annoyance as he looks at her and says: “I understand your concern and I will try.”

Simon gets up from her seat and moves closer to Ranveer. She holds his hand and says: “See, I love you guys and want the best for you. I can neither see you like this nor her. I do not know how much I love her, but I love you a lot. Sometimes I think that I will tell my kids that ‘I love your uncle more than you guys, so you better shut up.’ I do not care if you take me wrong, but I can’t see you like this. You have to talk to him.”

Ranveer: “I know you love me, and I love you more. I totally understand what you are saying, and I will talk to him. Right now, I think you should focus on yourself and should not take any kind of tension. I will take care of this, I promise.”

Rajveer comes out of the kitchen with cups of tea in his hands: “I think we should go upstairs and sit. The weather is amazing, and we all need to relax.”

Ranveer: “Let’s go.”

They have big smiles on their faces as they run upstairs leaving behind Rajveer who has an annoyed look on his face: “I will not let you guys win like that.” He shouts from behind.

Ranveer: “We have already won.”

When Rajveer reaches the roof, Simon and Ranveer are sitting on the chairs and Rajveer takes the third one.

Simon: “The weather is awesome. I am loving it.”

Ranveer: “The view is making it even more beautiful. Look at the sky.”

They all look up with hope in their eyes to see the beautiful stars up there. Ranveer: “I have heard that when people leave this world then they become stars.”

Simon smiles while looking above: “If so then that brightest star is my daughter.” She points at the star which is the brightest and the most beautiful one.

Rajveer looks at her and says: “But my star is sitting just here.” Simon looks at him and smiles. She snuggles into a hug, and he holds her tightly.

The Past

Simon. Ranveer and Rajveer are in the freshman year of their university. They are happy and excited for everything. Simon and Rajveer have been married for six months now. Despite that they have moved into university and have different majors, the three are inseparable. The three live in the same home. Since, university is away from their home, they all have rented a home and are staying together. Today, Simon is worried, and she thinks that her life has turned upside down. She took a pregnancy test in the morning, and it came out to positive. She does not know how to tell Rajveer about that since they had not planned anything like that. Both of them have big dreams about life and they both have a lot to do before starting a family. She does not know hoe to react. She is standing in her room, looking at her reflection in the mirror, thinking about a lot of different things when her hand unconsciously moves to her abdomen. For a moment she thinks that she can feel the life that is growing inside her, but she has to make sure. She carries her bag and goes to a maternity clinic. She is sitting in the lobby when a nurse comes out of the doctor’s room and says: “Simon Gupta, it is your turn.” For a moment Simon freezes in her place, then gathers all the courage she can muster up and enters the room. The doctor looks at her in shock, as she is too young to visit such a clinic. The doctor starts asking a few questions:

Doctor: “Hi, Simon. How are you doing?”

Simon: “I am good. How was your day?”

Doctor: “It was good. You look pretty young. What is your age?”

Simon: “I am eighteen.”

Doctor: “What brought you here?”

Simon feels embarrassed as she tries to explain what she is feeling. She opens up her mouth, but no words come out of that.

Doctor: “Simon, if you will not tell me, how will I be able to help you?”

Simon takes a deep breath and says: “I took a pregnancy test in the morning, and it was positive. Can you please confirm it?”

Doctor: “Ok.”

The doctor does a few checkups and takes certain tests. After twenty minutes, she comes back and says: “The test was right. You are six weeks pregnant.”

Simon had a shocked and complex look on her face. It looks like the blood has left her body as her skin turns pale: “Six weeks?”

Doctor: “Yes.”

Simon looks down as she tries to absorb what she has just heard. Doctor: “Does your family know about this?”

Simon: “About what?”

Doctor: “That you have this kind of relationship with someone. About what you did?”

Simon: “What do you mean?”

Doctor: “From the look on your face, I can say that you were not ready for this, and it was the result of your mistake. You should have controlled yourself. How could you do that to your parents? You ruined their names. I feel sad and sorry for them.”

Simon smiles and says: “You do not have to feel anything for them, and I have not ruined their names. You are misinterpreting things. You are right in saying that I was not ready for this, but you are wrong in saying that it was a mistake. I am married and my parents have known about that since they got me married. It is not an illicit child. Rather, this child is the result of my marriage to my favourite person. I got married six months ago.”

The doctor has an embarrassed look on her face: “I am so sorry for what I said. Why are you sad then?”

Simon: “I do not know how to tell my husband about this. We are still young and have big goals to achieve. I do not know how he will react. I am worried about that. I do not know if this news is a gain or loss.”

Doctor: “I understand. See, being a young couple is never easy. You must talk to him, and I think if he loves you, he will take care of this. I do not know anything about him, but if he is man enough, then he will support you and will never leave you. If you guys agree to keep the child, nature will support you in its own ways and I have seen thousands of miracles every day. On the other hand, if you guys think that you cannot have the kid right now, then you are young and can have the kid later. Abortion is always an option.”

At the mention of abortion. Simon flinches a bit and then looks at the doctor in utter surprise and confusion. She tries to compose herself as she says: “I will discuss it with my husband.”

Doctor: “If you guys need any kind of help, I am here.”

Simon: “Thank you, doctor. I will see you later.”

Simon is about to leave the room with her tests in her hand when the doctor says: “You are a strong little girl. I have seen fire in your eyes, and I know that you will do great. Today, you will see whether your favourite person is also the best fit for you or not. I know it is not easy for you, but it is best to talk about it soon as, in the future, things could get a little difficult for both parties. I hope you do not take me wrong, but I also want you to believe in yourself and your choice before you talk to him.”

Simon nods and leaves the room.
