Rajveer goes into Ranveer’s room. He is listening to Amma jee’s story and taking notes. It is six in the evening, and they have been working for twelve straight hours except a fifteen-minute break. Rajveer has put down all the people he thinks are involved in this case or know something about Madumati. He is trying to link the points between Madumati’s and Gujrial’s stories. Ranveer has put down the important information from today’s episode of Ranvijy and Sameen’s story. He got to know a lot of people. Tonight, the trio will also be going to the Gujrial Mansion, since Sime and Jaya have returned. They have to start investigating them since they have done their background check.
Ranveer: “All good?”
Rajveer: “I need to ask her some questions.”
Ranveer: “Give her a minute so that she can complete this part.”
Rajveer: “Ok.”
After a minute, Ranveer: “You can ask her whatever you want.”
Rajveer: “Amma, I need to ask you something. In fact, about someone.”
Amma jee: “Go ahead.”
Rajveer: “Do you know about Madumati?”
Amma stares at Rajveer in surprise, as if she has seen something unbelievable or a ghost.
Rajveer: “Amma, I know you know about her, and I really want to know about her. You have to tell me. It is a very important lead.”
Ranveer looks at them in utter surprise. He is a bit confused.
Amma: “I can not tell anything. She will kill me.”
Rajveer: “She is not here. She cannot kill you.”
Amma: “She is here all the time. Haven’t you heard?”
Rajveer: “No, I want to know it from you.”
Amma: “She is a witch. She haunts people and harms them. She is wild and threatening.”
Rajveer: “Do you believe that?”
Amma is reluctant and does not say anything.
Rajveer: “Do you really believe that? After living with the Gujrial who was way ahead of his time, you still believe that. After what happened to Sameen and Alia, you still believe that?”
Amma stutters: “Yes, I do.” She is looking down and does not say a word.
Rajveer: “ OK, this will probably help. I talked to the girl named Geeti, the one you all said was haunted. She was not haunted, and she did not see anything. She acted that way because she loved someone and wanted to get married to that guy, but her family did not approve of that. It was just a made-up plan. She was found in the field with that guy and her family said she was haunted and did not know what she was doing. And about the things which went missing. Why is it like that the things which are missing were recovered from a tree? A tree under which some addicts get high. That is not a coincidence. People have been building on that story for so long and, you know, I know what the reality is. Also, you have worked with the Gujrials since forever. How is it possible that she was invited to a party, and you were not there? Mr. Gujrial celebrated her transfer to this area, and you do not know her.”
Amma: “All I know is that she was a fabulous police officer and Mr. Gujrial loved women empowerment. He was very focused on it and was the first one to send his daughter to the US when others did not even get a basic education. That was the reason he celebrated her arrival and victory?”
Rajveer: “Then why is it that the celebrations in this village happened on the same days when one of Madumati’s cases closed regardless of the place where she was posted?”
Amma: “I do not know.”
Rajveer: “Do you remember the period during which Mr. Gunrial was at Harvard?”
Amma has a flashback where Gujrial came home from London and started shouting as soon as she entered the door. All she could remember was him saying: “I got into Harvard.”
Amma: “It was 1944.”
Rajveer: “What a coincidence. Madumati was also at Harvard in those days.”
Rajveer looks at the sweat beads forming on Amma’s forehead. She is stuttering and her voice is breaking. She is trying her best to maintain her exposure.
Rajveer: “I know you have a lot to tell. I do not want to make things difficult for you. Please help me.”
Amma: “I can only say that sometimes very big families with white images have very dark secrets.”
Rajveer: “Amma, I know that, but we want to know those secrets. What happened in that part Amma?”
Amma: “I do not remember any party.”
Rajveer: “The party after which Madumati went missing and no one has seen her ever since.”
Flashback:
There is hustle and bustle everywhere. The Gujrial mansion is fully decorated with lights. There are people from every corner of the country. People are having wine as they celebrate yet another success of Madumati. Helpers make sure that everyone gets served and no guest is left unattended. Mrs. Gujrial is in all her glory. She looks beautiful as always. Mr. Gujrial is dressed in his suit and looks really graceful. The halls are filled with chatter and the kids are running everywhere. Madumati enters with her full remarkable personality, which can make men tremble in their shadow. She greets everyone with her usual charm. However, on her entrance, Mrs. Gujrial tightens the grip around her glass as if she will break it into a million pieces. But she does not let go of her composure. She goes to Mr. Gujrial and talks to him. Mrs. Gujrial does not like the site. She goes to the library and closes the door. After a while, she calls one of the helpers to pour her more wine. Amma enters the room. At that time, she is in her early thirties.
Amma: “I think you should not have any more wine. You have already had enough.”
Mrs. Gujrial: “You are no one to tell me a word. Who are you? A no one. Do as I say.”
Amma pours a half glass of wine. Mrs. Gujrial gulps it down in a single sip. She plays with the glass in her hand as she says: “You know everything Laila. Do not you?”
Laila (Amma jee) holds her as she is really tipsy. “There is nothing like that Madam.”
Mrs. Gujrial: “Can’t you see how happy they look together? She is talking to him, to my husband, in front of everyone.”
Laila: “They are far apart, Ma’am.”
Mrs. Gujrial: “Why cannot I see the distance? They must be laughing.”
Laila: “I can assure you one thing, ma’am, there is nothing romantic.”
Mrs. Gujrial: “What else can you tell me, Laila? No matter how successful she is, she has got a poor taste in men.”
Laila: “There is nothing like that, ma’am. You have to control yourself. There are a lot of people outside.”
Mrs. Gujrial: “People, who cares about them? All of them are naked. Today I will tell everyone.”
Laila: “Ma’am, ma’am.” She tries to hold her and drag her to the chair.
Mrs. Gujrial is so drunk that she is unable to get out of the chair. Mrs. Gujrial: “You are going to regret it tomorrow.”
After a while, she continues: “Laila, how many men do you have to put in your pocket or bed to get this much fame and success?”
She remains silent. Mrs. Gujrial: “Tell me. You are a good girl. You work hard all day and have got nothing. Look at her.”
Mrs. Gujrial gets a pistol out of one of the drawers of her table. “You know what? Never mind. Everything is going to end tonight.”
