The Heartbreak

1902 Words
Simon does not know that it is the same brooch that set the basis of the relationship between Sameen and Vijay. If someone knows that, then they will only assume one thing and that is that Sameen carried this brooch with her all the time. Simon puts the broken brooch in a plastic bag and sends it out to the forensic department for investigation. The team gets the news that Rajinder’s last rituals are going to be performed today; hence, they will have to discontinue the investigation. Simon does not end everything abruptly. Rather, she closes the area after looking into it thoroughly and marks it out so that no one enters the area. She tries to make sure that no evidence is left unattended, and no one tries to change it or remove them permanently. However, she keeps a certain degree of risk in check. After an hour of making sure that everything is in check, Simon and her team leave the site. Simon asks her team to go directly to the hospital and she goes to the forensic department to drop off the evidence. There the team is standing with certain reports and gloomy faces. They are all sad at the loss of their teammate, but they also have to work on the case. Simon: “Here is the brooch I found today.” One of the team members says: “We need to show you something.” Simon: “Okay.” Team member: “Come with me.” Simon follows them to the morgue. The guy stands at the head side of Alia and points towards a bald patch on her head: “Do you see this patch?” Simon: “Yes.” Team member: “She was tortured before she died. Someone pulled her hair.” Simon: “How can you say that? Maybe she had a medical problem.” Teammate: “If she had a medical problem, the patch would not look like that. Some hair is broken and it happens when the hair is pulled. I also need to show you something. Come here”. He moves towards Sameen’s hand and shows a big bruise on it. The bruise is in the form of a fingerprint. “This one is Alia’s. The angel on which this mark appears is when you hold the hand at the back like this.” He holds Simon’s arm and pulls her on her back. Simon: “So, it means that Alia was trying to act as a shield for her mom.” The teammate: “We can say that.” Simon pulls her hand from that guy’s grip, and he says: “I am sorry.” Simon: “You better be.” Simon has stopped saying okay to people’s unintentional touch since the incident. She makes them realize that they are wrong and that they do not have the right to hold anyone. The guy is embarrassed. Simon: “Is there anything else to discuss?” The guy: “There is a lot to discuss and a lot that my team wants to share. I think we can have a meeting some time.” Simon: “After Rajinder’s final ceremony, we can have a meeting and will keep Ranveer and Rajveer in the loop. They also have to attend it since we are all working on the same case.” The guy has a disappointed look on his face and Simon senses that too. She is not a fool, and her observation is very strong. She turns around and leaves the room immediately after saying: “I will see you at the meeting with others. Get everything ready.” The guy is the youngest head of the forensic department and is really arrogant. His name is Yash, and he is the lord of his field. He is too good to handle, and the irony is he knows that. No one has ever given him a shut-up call and Simon does that all the time. This is one reason that he attracts him to Simon. Nobody in the area knows that Simon is married and that she is Rajveer’s wife. In the hospital, the atmosphere is full of sadness. It feels as if the entire village is sad, and every particle of the air is sad. The people of the hospital are also tense, since none of them, how they are going to face Rajinder’s family. His death has murdered his parents’ hope and his fiancé-to-be's dreams. Things have come down like a house of cards for his family. As soon as Zain enters the hospital, everyone’s attention moves toward him. They know that it is not going to be easy. Zain enters the hospital in full pride and goes to his room. He sits beside him, holds his hand and says: “ You said that you wanted me to keep my head always high, I will never disappoint you. I will realize your dreams and I can’t wait to meet you. I may be holding this hand for the last time, but I know that you will always be there for me. You were the best thing that ever happened to me, man. You wanted me to live this life on my own terms, but from now onwards, I will live my life on your terms; fearless and humble. I promise you; I will never disappoint you.” He wipes tears from his eyes as he says: “I never thought that things would end like that. I did not want it to end like that and I never wanted to lose you. You were not just a friend; you were a brother to me.” Rajinder’s parents never liked Zain because of the religious differences, but now his mother comes into the room and hugs Zain. She wipes his tears and says: “We have lost one son and we can’t afford to lose you, son. Try to compose and handle yourself.” Zain: “I need to tell you something.” Rajinder’s mother: “Is it that important?” Zain: “More important than anything.” Rajinder’s mother: “I will not be able to handle any more bad news.” Zain: “Please sit down. Rajinder wanted to tell you something but was afraid that you and his father would be angry. However, I think you need to know it. You know about Gurpreet?” Rajinder’s mother: “I can’t talk about that girl at this moment. My son has left this world and you are talking about the girl who trapped him and made him go against his parents' will. I do not believe that this is happening. My son is dead, and you are talking about her.” Zain: “She deserves to be here, and you should not stop her.” Rajinder’s mother: “I will never let that happen.” Zain: “Can you afford to lose another Rajinder?” Rajinder’s mother: “What do you mean?” Zain: “She is pregnant.” Rajinder’s mother: “What do you mean?” Zain: “She is carrying Rajinder’s child and he was more than happy when he got to know about that. However, he was afraid to tell you because of your reaction. The kid was his choice, and can you even imagine what that girl is going through now. Just put yourself in her shoes.” Rajinder’s mother: “I am not shameless like her.” Zain: “I am sorry, I do not want to say it, but if she is shameless, then so was your son, because you could not get pregnant on her own. You are my elder, and I do not want to misbehave with you, but she deserves to be here, and the kid deserves to be a part of his or her father’s last rituals. Do you even have an idea about how difficult her life is going to be from today onwards? I am sure if you had an idea, you would not have been sitting here like that.” Zain leaves the room to give his mother some time to think. He comes out to find Gurpreet standing in a corner covering her face in a veil and crying. He goes over to her and maintains a respectful distance between them: “I am sorry.” These are the only words that come out of his mouth. Gurpreet: “So am I.” she looks at him with eyes full of tears. “Can I see him for one last time please?” Zain: “Come with me.” Gurpreet follows him to the room. As she walks, she looks down and does not lift her head even for a second. As soon as she sees his mother, she hides behind Zain. Gurpreet was always a shy person and Rajinder’s mother hated her since she wanted him to get married to a girl as per her choice. In reality, Gurpreet was Rajinder’s wife. The day his mother rejected her, he got married to her in a secret ceremony. No one knew about that other than the two people who tied the knot. Now, when they came to know about the pregnancy, they wanted to make their relationship official. That was the reason that Rajinder wanted to propose to her. Zain did not know about their wedding, but he did know about the one who was about to come. When Gurpreet hides behind him, he says: “No one will hurt you unless I am here. I used to call you Bhabhi (sister-in-law), but from this moment you are my sister, and I will respect you as my daughter. No one will ever lay a hand on you.” Rajinder’s mother comes forward and Gurpreet flinches. She thinks that she will slap her, but instead, a hand creases her cheek. She opens her eyes to see that Rajinder’s mother is standing just in front of her. She has tears in her eyes as she says: “I am sorry at your loss.” A loud cry escapes Gurpreet’s mouth as she hugs Rajinder’s mother. She hugs her back tightly. The two ladies cry a lot. Gurpreet is unable to control her sobs when Rajinder’s mother says: “You have to take care of yourself for the sake of Rajinder you are carrying. Try to breathe, daughter.” Another cry escapes her mouth as she says: “Please, promise me you will never take this kid from me. Please, this is the only thing I have. I have nothing. Please, please promise me you will never take him or her from me. Please, promise me that you will not make this kid pay for what we did.” Rajinder’s mother looks at her face full of tears and tries to relax her. She says: “I promise you that no one will take this kid from you. This is yours and Rajinder’s kid and you have all the rights over this kid. The kid is all yours, I promise.” Gurpreet thought that since her husband had died and no one knew about their wedding, people would think that it was a love child and would snatch her child away from her. She thought to herself that she was weak and would not be able to protect her kid. She was weak, scared and heartbroken.
