After a satisfying evening, Selina returned to Maple Forest residence at half-past ten, feeling a rare sense of indulgence that left her both relaxed and tired.
After her bath and skincare routine, she drifted off to sleep without any trouble, despite this being her first night staying here.
In the middle of a deep sleep, a shrill ring from her phone cut through the stillness of the night.
Startled awake, Selina saw "Marina" on the caller ID and quickly answered.
"Hello, Aunt."
"Why did it take you so long to answer? Where's Calvin? I can't get through to his phone."
It was Marina's usual reproachful tone.
"I'm at the hospital with my mom tonight, and I don't know where Calvin is."
Selina hesitated before lying, not ready to divulge their impending divorce or the need to prepare her grandfather for the news.
"You don’t know? As Calvin’s wife, shouldn’t you be at home taking care of him? How do you even call yourself a wife? I never approved of Calvin marrying you. If it weren't for Old Mr. Rollin's decision, you wouldn't have been able to set foot in the Rollin family home. And now, staying out all night? After five years of achieving nothing, and you can't even manage to have a child. What use are you?"
Selina absorbed the tirade in silence, took a deep breath, and responded softly, "Aunt, is there an emergency with Calvin?"
Marina wouldn't have called at this hour just to scold her.
"Oh, right! I was so upset I almost forgot. Grandfather's been hospitalized; he's in the emergency room right now. I can't reach Calvin; you need to find him and come to the hospital!"
Marina hung up abruptly, leaving Selina frozen, phone in hand, as if she had lost her soul. The only person in the Rollin family who genuinely cared for her was Old Mr. Rollin—the patriarch!
Snapping back to reality, Selina quickly dressed and called a cab to Yeinan Villa.
She attempted to call Calvin throughout the drive, but as expected, he didn’t answer.
Upon arriving, she rushed inside without turning on the lights, calling out, "Calvin, Calvin!" as she ran upstairs.
She pushed open his bedroom door and flicked on the light, only to find the bed empty—no sign of him.
Clutching her phone, she pondered where he could be at this late hour. After a moment, she called Calvin's assistant, Joe, who as his personal assistant was always on standby and most likely to know Calvin's whereabouts.
Joe picked up quickly.
"Mrs., what’s the issue so late at night?"
"Where’s Calvin?" Selina asked directly.
Silence followed on the other end.
"There’s no need to hesitate, just tell me. Grandfather is critically ill."
As soon as she finished, Joe replied, "He might be at Galaxy Bay."
"Thank you."
Selina was about to hang up but heard Joe add, "Mrs., I’ll wait for you at the entrance of Galaxy Bay. It might be difficult for you to get in alone."
Selina hesitated for a few seconds before softly agreeing, "Okay."
She arrived near one in the morning, and Joe was waiting at the gate of the upscale community, Galaxy Bay, known for its tight security similar to Yeinan Villa.
"Mrs., this way."
Following Joe briskly inside, he confidently led her to a building and pressed the elevator button.
Standing in front of a closed apartment door, Joe stepped back to give her space.
With a surge of courage, Selina rang the doorbell, her trembling hand betraying her feigned composure.
After a few rings, the door opened to reveal Candice.
"I need to see Calvin," Selina stated directly, ignoring Candice’s expression.
A moment later, Calvin appeared in casual clothes, as if he belonged there.
He first glanced coldly at Joe, then turned a bland look towards Selina.
"What’s the matter?"
His voice was cool and composed, exuding an inherent dignity, devoid of the embarrassment expected of a man caught in a compromising situation.
"Grandfather is in emergency care. Aunt couldn’t reach you and sent me to find you," Selina explained.
Calvin scoffed but remained silent, his eyes mocking.
"Believe it or not, it’s up to you."
With those words, Selina turned to leave, forcing herself to stay calm and walk firmly, not letting the pain show as she moved her heavy legs.
"Get some rest; I’m leaving now."
The voice behind her lacked the earlier coldness, now carrying a hint of warmth.
Selina’s lips curled into a cold smile, realizing this was his version of tenderness.
In the elevator, Selina stood in the corner, expressionless, while Joe also tried to make himself as small as possible.
Calvin watched Selina through the elevator glass, his face grim, saying nothing.
"Go back," he instructed Joe upon exiting the elevator, before pulling Selina into his black Bentley.
The car sped through the night. Selina looked out the window, her mind uneasy with worry about her grandfather, ignoring Calvin’s somber expression.
"Selina, can you have a little dignity?" Calvin's voice cut through the silence of the car, cold and biting.
Selina turned to face him, her gaze calm.
"Keeping Grandfather up so late, did a dog eat your conscience?"
Calvin glanced at her disdainfully, his words sparse and measured.
Selina gave a self-deprecating laugh, "Yes, it was eaten by a dog, one that even after five years still hasn’t warmed to me."
"Are you seeking death?" Calvin’s voice was frosty, laden with scorn, "You hand me a divorce agreement in the morning and then use Grandfather to play games in the evening. You really have some nerve."
Selina didn’t want to speak another word to him, turning her head to look out at the quiet, cold night. They were getting divorced, and she forced herself not to make the same mistakes, not allowing herself to feel heartache.
Upon arriving at the hospital, Selina rushed to see her grandfather, exiting the car at the hospital entrance and running to his room, while Calvin parked alone.
At the VIP room door, Selina hesitated for a moment, took a deep breath, and gently pushed the door open.
It was now past two in the morning, yet the room was still filled with many members of the Rollin family, except for Calvin.
The overwhelming scene made Selina’s heart sink, and tears blurred her vision instantly.
"Why are you alone?" Selina barely stepped in when Marina pushed her out, peering down the corridor.
"Didn’t I tell you to find Calvin? Where is he?"
"He..." Selina bit her lip, reluctant to mention Calvin at this moment, but eventually said, "He went..."
Before she could finish, a sharp slap echoed through the hallway.
"Useless thing, can’t even find your own husband. At a time like this, those who should be here aren’t, and those who shouldn’t be are eager to show up. You’re so eager to come here, isn’t it just to perform well in front of Grandfather, hoping he’ll give you some shares? You really dare to dream!"
Calvin stepped out of the elevator, heard Marina’s voice, furrowed his brow, and said softly, "Aunt."
