"Eva, hurry your ass up. We are gonna be late for school!" I bellowed up the stairs.
A horn honked out front. I grabbed my stuff and headed out the door. Mom runs out of the orchard and gives me a hug, just as Eva comes out. Mom gives Eva a hug, too." Happy Birthday, my girls."she says to us. Dad yells, "Spaghetti tonight! Happy birthday!" From the garden.
Josh honks his horn again as I roll my eyes and climb into the back with Eva. Kelsey looks back at us from the front seat, "OMG!! I can't believe you guys aren't skipping school. It's like your sweet sixteen birthday. You should be sleeping in and planning out your big birthday bash." Josh just shakes his head, knowing his sister cares nothing for school and everything about a great party. They moved into the farm neighboring ours, and the four of us have been thick as thieves. Kelsey is a couple of months old than us, and Josh is a year and a half older.
The day flew by with the usual tests, quizzes, and homework dumped on us. At lunch, Eva and I grabbed our usual table.Josh and Kelsey were already waiting for us.
"Please tell me you guys are planning a massive party for your birthdays this weekend." Kelsey inquired.
"If by massive party you mean the four of use scarfing pizza and junk food, while binge watching movies, I'm totally in." I replied. Eva piped in with "That's a great start, sis, but what about the new skating rink in town?" It even has a bowling alley! A little bowling, skating, and more junk food."
"What about both? make it a full weekend, and even add some arcade time. I owe Sage a rematch at foosball." Josh added.
"Sounds perfect!" Eva and I said at the same time. The bell rang, and we all headed off to our last class of the day. Eva and I had gym class. Neither one of us enjoyed it. We were both strong and athletic due to living on the farm, but I was more interested in baking. I loved to bake and spent every chance I could in the kitchen with mom. Poeple came from all over to buy our pies, jams, and pastries. Eva's passion was music. She had a siren's gift of music.
Finally, gym class was over.
We met at our lockers. Eva and I headed outside to meet up with Josh and Kelsey. They seemed to be bickering again. Kelsey threw up her hands and groaned in exasperation. While we slid into the back seats. "What's up?" I ask. Being a sensitive friend, but not sure I really wanted the answer. Kelsey starts ranting about some hottie named Tyler, who she wanted to include this weekend. Apparently. Josh one told her it was rude to invite others before asking us.He wasn't wrong. Josh then told Tyler to get bent. The rant ended with her yelling "UGh stupid overbearing brothers." With a huff and an eye roll. Josh just looked at me in the rear view mirror and rolled his eyes with a smirk that I couldn't help but share. It wasn't long before we made it to our long drive. Josh dropped us off at the end of the driveway, same as any other day.
As I stepped out of the jeep, I looked at Eva, both of us sensing something off. We waved goodbye and headed down the drive.
I could smell smoke once we rounded the bend in the driveway. Eva and I began running towards our farm house, screaming for our parents. No one answered. The house was a blaze, we couldn't enter.Eva ran towards the orchard and I started running as I saw a lump in the garden. "No no no," I said. "Dad?" I tried to shake him, and his head rolled away, still holding a silent scream on his face. Before I could make a sound, Eva flew screaming from the orchard. She had tears streaming down her face, and I knew she had found mom in there. We were starting to fall in shock. How could this happen? who would hurt our parents. All of a sudden, the orchard was filled with a roaring blaze, and a lady flew out of it like the devil was chasing from the next orchard. "He's found you!" she screamed at us.
"Who are you and who found us?" I asked. She told me her name was Jenna and was our biological mother, that she hid us from our father, who destroyed her family and coven. Whatever that meant. She grabbed Eva's hand and mine, and the next thing I knew, we popped up a remote town I had never seen.
Jenna took us to a little diner and ordered us some fries. None of us wanted to eat, really. Eva just stared out the windows with tears still running down her cheeks. I just tuned in and out of Jenna's explanation and plan.
We left the diner and grabbed adjoining rooms at a local in. Eva asked me what I was thinking, and honestly, I had no answer.
"Do you believe her? What about mom and dad? Who is going to take care of them?" she asked.
"I don't know. I'm pretty sure the fire everywhere took care of mom and dad. Jenna roasted the place before we left."
"Do you think she is crazy and the one who killed them?" she asked me.
"No, she looked as scared as we were. she said he was still searching for us. People are either going to think we died or that we started the fire. Josh and Kelsey are gonna go nuts. God, I hope they are safe."
