**Chapter Nine: Secrets of the Past**

1436 Words
Alexander woke to a city bathed in early morning light, but the sunlight felt strange on his skin. It was bright, yes, but sharp, almost too sharp, as if the world itself had changed overnight. His body still hummed with the remnants of last night’s surge—power that he could not control, energy that left him exhausted yet restless. He sat up slowly in his room, running a hand through his hair, trying to calm the strange rhythm inside him. He had fought instinctively yesterday, a force rising within that he did not understand. It scared him. And yet… there was a thrill he could not deny. A faint knock at the door broke his thoughts. “Alexander? Are you awake?” Mary’s soft voice carried through the wood. He froze. Even the sound of her voice sent a ripple through him. “Yes,” he called, voice hoarse from tension. “Come in.” Mary opened the door cautiously, carrying a small basket of pastries. Her cheeks were rosy from the morning chill. “I thought you might like some breakfast,” she said, setting it on the small table beside him. “You look… tired.” “I am,” he admitted, rubbing his eyes. “I can’t seem to rest properly anymore. Something inside me…” He paused, unsure how to explain the fire, the power, the wild instinct that had awakened. “…it’s changing me.” Mary stepped closer, her eyes searching his face. “I noticed. Yesterday… what happened out there in the forest… it wasn’t normal.” Her voice was gentle, but firm. “I don’t know what it is, Alexander, but I want to help.” He looked at her, really looked. She was so calm, so determined, and yet there was a vulnerability that made him ache. He had never felt this pull toward anyone before—not like this. “I don’t know if anyone could help me,” he admitted. “Not yet. I don’t even fully understand what I’m becoming.” Mary smiled faintly, trying to ease his tension. “Then we’ll figure it out together. I trust you, and I know you can handle it.” Her words grounded him, soothed the wild heat within just enough for him to breathe. “Thank you,” he whispered. After breakfast, Alexander decided he needed answers. The shadow from the forest had not been random; it was deliberate. And if someone was watching him, then perhaps there were other pieces of the puzzle waiting to be found. He moved to his father’s old study, a room he had rarely entered. Dust lined the shelves, and cobwebs clung to the corners. Yet despite the age of the place, it held a strange energy, as if it remembered him. Something about it felt alive. He ran his fingers over books and papers until one caught his attention: a small, leather-bound journal, tucked behind larger tomes. The cover was worn, the edges frayed. He opened it carefully. Inside were pages of notes, sketches, and letters—most of them illegible to him, but some words jumped out: Alpha, bloodline, power, legacy. Alexander’s pulse quickened. His father had written of him? Of his abilities? Of a destiny he had never been told? “Mary,” he called softly. “I think… I’ve found something.” She entered behind him, glancing at the journal with wide eyes. “What is it?” “I don’t fully understand yet,” he admitted. “But it’s about my family… about me. Something I wasn’t told.” Mary leaned closer, careful not to touch the delicate pages. “Do you want me to help?” she asked. He hesitated, then nodded. “Yes. I don’t even know where to begin, but… I can’t do this alone.” Together, they studied the journal. Sketches of symbols, strange diagrams, and notes in a careful, almost secret hand filled the pages. Some spoke of abilities, training, and rituals; others hinted at danger, enemies, and a legacy that seemed heavy and unavoidable. Mary frowned. “This… it sounds dangerous,” she said softly. “Are you sure you want to know all of this?” Alexander ran a hand over his face. “I have to. I can feel it in me—something powerful. Something growing. And I can’t ignore it anymore.” A sudden noise outside interrupted them—a low, deliberate shuffle. Alexander’s senses flared instantly. Someone was near the window, watching. He moved quietly, positioning himself in front of Mary. “Stay behind me,” he whispered. The shadow shifted. The figure was tall, cloaked, but Alexander could feel the malice emanating from it. His muscles tensed, his instincts coiled. He had faced this before, but today he felt something different—a new strength, a surge he could not fully control. Mary’s hand brushed his arm, steadying him. “We can do this together,” she whispered. He nodded, letting her presence ground him, as he had done before. The figure lunged, faster than thought. Alexander reacted instantly, intercepting it with a force he didn’t realize he possessed. The figure staggered, retreating slightly. Mary, fearless as ever, kicked at the figure’s leg, causing it to stumble further. Alexander’s instincts flared; he surged forward, fists striking with raw power. The figure recoiled, then vanished into the shadows. Alexander exhaled slowly, chest heaving. “It’s coming,” he said, voice low. “And it won’t stop.” Mary nodded, placing a reassuring hand on his shoulder. “Then we’ll face it. Together.” They returned to the study, though neither spoke much. The weight of the journal pressed on Alexander’s mind, but the encounter had reminded him of something important: he was not alone. Mary had his back. Somehow, her presence made him stronger, calmer, sharper. Hours passed as they combed through the journal. Symbols and phrases began to make sense, little by little. Alexander realized that his father had left him more than just a name—he had left him clues, tools, and a path. Yet the path was dangerous, filled with enemies, tests, and unknown trials. Mary pointed to a page, her finger trembling slightly. “Look here. This part… it mentions a shadow, a figure that tests the Alpha. It says something about the awakening…” Alexander’s heart skipped. Could it be connected to the figure from the forest? To the one that had attacked him today? He didn’t answer aloud. Instead, he traced the lines with his finger, feeling the weight of what was coming. Later, as the sun dipped toward the horizon, they left the study together. The city streets were quiet again, but the tension remained. Alexander could feel it—the eyes watching, the danger waiting, the forces gathering. Mary walked beside him, careful not to crowd him, but close enough that her presence anchored him. He wanted to say something, but words felt heavy. Instead, he glanced at her, and she met his gaze. No words were needed. Trust. Connection. Something unspoken, building. The shadows deepened as night fell. Alexander and Mary paused at the edge of a narrow street, listening. A distant rustle, a whisper, a shadow slipping across the rooftops—it was all around them. Alexander’s senses flared again. He could feel the presence of Amber, Christian, and Poya lurking somewhere ahead, even if he didn’t yet know them fully. Danger was coming, inevitable and unrelenting. Mary squeezed his arm gently. “We’ll face it,” she said again, with quiet determination. Alexander nodded, drawing strength from her courage. He didn’t know the full extent of his powers, the secrets of his past, or the dangers waiting in the shadows. But one thing was certain: they would face it together. And somewhere beyond the city, unseen and patient, forces were stirring. They were aware of him now, aware of the awakening. And the hunt would not wait. The night closed around them, heavy and full of whispers. Alexander’s heart beat with anticipation, fear, and a strange thrill. He had glimpsed a fragment of the life he was destined to lead—a life of power, danger, and destiny. Mary walked beside him, unaware of just how much she was entwined in it, but Alexander felt it. A bond, unspoken, unbroken. Something that would grow stronger as the coming days unfolded. The future was uncertain, the shadows deep, but one truth remained clear: his life, and hers, would never be the same again. And the secrets of the past were only the beginning
