CHAPTER 5Another of the things that amused Frank about television police shows was that police personnel never seemed to be shown actually filling out paperwork. It seemed like the major part of every real-life cop’s job was doing just that. There were reasons for that, and Frank understood them well. At some point, there needed to be a legitimate chain of evidence that could be taken to trial and not shredded by skillful defense attorneys or rejected by exasperated judges. Every officer and every detective was constantly reminded that the care they exercised in establishing that chain of evidence, documenting every interview and every action, however minor, could ultimately make the difference between conviction and acquittal.
