Clack! Clack! CLACK! Their bokken collided with brute force. Ryuten twisted, stepping inside Tokegu’s guard, and slammed him to the ground with a thud that turned heads in the yard. “Savior?” Ryuten scoffed, wiping sweat from his brow. “Pfft… you’re pathetic.” He circled Tokegu slowly, bokken resting on his shoulder. “I don’t understand what Yuki sees in you.” That did it. The air around Tokegu seemed to shift. Ryuten raised his bokken high and brought it down in a clean, punishing arc but it hit nothing. Puff. A burst of smoke curled through the air, and Ryuten spun wildly, searching. Too late. A shadow shifted behind him, and an arm snapped tight around his throat, Tokegu’s voice low and calm in his ear. “You talk too much.” Tokegu held the choke just long enough to prove the point, then released him without a word. Ryuten dropped to one knee, gasping, shoving himself backward across the dirt. His eyes burned with confusion, rage barely held back by shock. “You… you’re a monster!” Tokegu didn’t flinch. He simply stood there, calm, steady and silent. The surrounding shadow still seemed to cling, like it hadn’t fully left. Takemaru stepped forward, face unreadable. “That’s enough.” The yard was silent now. Every trainee frozen. Every eye locked on Tokegu. “Ryuten! Go rest now!” barked Takemaru, his voice sharp, cutting through the tension in the yard. Ryuten staggered to his feet, glaring one last time at Tokegu before storming off, his frustration palpable. Takemaru turned to Tokegu, his eyes narrowing with suspicion. “You moved like you did before,” he said quietly. "That wasn't just skill, it was something else." Tokegu's body was still humming with adrenaline, but he could feel the weight of Takemaru’s gaze. His voice was low, almost hesitant. “I didn’t mean to. I just… I lost control. When he spoke about Yuki… something inside me snapped.” Takemaru’s expression tightened, and he took a small step forward, lowering his voice. “You’ve done this before. That… speed. It’s like you're not moving with the fight—you’re moving ahead of it.” Tokegu’s eyes flickered with uncertainty. “It’s like my body already knows what’s coming, and when I get angry… it’s like it takes over.” Takemaru’s gaze was heavy, calculating. “You’ve tapped into something deeper. Something that should stay hidden. We can’t let this become your go-to reaction.” Tokegu felt a cold unease creep up his spine, but he didn’t speak. Takemaru had already said too much. Ryuten’s fists were still clenched tight, his knuckles white against the stone wall. The frustration was eating him alive. "I can't do this," he muttered, the words barely escaping through gritted teeth. The familiar, soft voice of Yuki broke through his thoughts. “Ryuten…” she started, her tone gentle, but carrying the weight of concern. He spun around, too quickly, and almost knocked into her. “What now, Yuki? You here to tell me I’m not good enough as well?” Yuki stood still, a calm presence amidst his storm, her eyes searching his face. “I don’t think it’s Takemaru you should be worried about defeating,” she said quietly, almost too calmly. “Maybe it’s yourself.” Ryuten blinked, his mind spinning. “What the hell does that mean?” Yuki’s gaze softened, her voice careful. “You can’t keep fighting yourself, Ryuten. Your anger is clouding your judgment.” Ryuten scoffed, the words laced with bitterness. “Oh, so you think I’m just supposed to sit back and let him walk all over me? You think I’m supposed to let him win?” She didn’t flinch at his tone, but Ryuten could see a faint sadness in her eyes. “No… I think you're only losing when you don’t control it. When you let it control you.” He shook his head, frustration thick in his voice. “I don’t understand why you love him so much. Why him and not me? We should be together.” Yuki's expression tightened, her words gentle but firm. “Ryuten… you’re like a brother to me. But that’s all we’ll ever be.” Her words hit him like a physical blow. He recoiled slightly, anger flaring again, but this time with a different kind of sting. “A brother?” he spat, barely controlling the surge of bitterness. "That's all I am to you?" Yuki took a step back, her voice softening. “Ryuten… I don’t want to hurt you. But you’re focusing on the wrong fight. You need to understand that you’re worthy just as you are. You don’t have to compete with him to be enough.” Ryuten scoffed, quickly turning to walk away. Yuki reached out, her fingers brushing against his arm. “Ryuten, wait!!” But he pulled away, his body trembling, not from fear, but from the storm building inside him. He turned his back to her and walked off. "Who the hell does he think he is?" he growled under his breath. "He's taking everything from me." His jaw clenched as he neared the edge of the yard. Just before disappearing around the corner, he glanced back over his shoulder, eyes locking with Yuki’s one last time.. "Everything." he muttered.
