The room fell silent as both Derrick and Grey stood before Elder Thomas, their heads bowed in shame. Annie, still shaken from witnessing the intense confrontation between the two, couldn't help but feel a surge of fear and confusion. She knew the fight was more than just a power struggle.
Elder Thomas's stern gaze pierced through the tension-filled atmosphere as he continued, his voice firm and commanding. "You both should be ashamed of yourselves. This behavior is not acceptable in the presence of your mate, Derrick," his tone was disappointing.
Derrick hung his head low and his chest heaving from the fight. "I'm sorry elder Thomas, I lost control," he admitted, his voice filled with remorse. He knew he had let his emotions over him.
Grey, too, expressed his regret. "I apologize as well, Elder. My actions were uncalled for," he confessed, his gaze shifting between Elder Thomas and Annie. Despite his pride, he knew he had crossed a line.
Elder Thomas sighed heavily, his expression softening slightly. "Apologies won't undo what has been done, it's just the beginning" he acknowledged. "We need to find a means to resolve this conflict before it erupt to violence."
Grey looked at him. " Really? Then I still don't get why you think Derrick is worthy of the throne and not me." He said this, looking at Elder Thomas.
"He is your brother, and by right, he is the legal Alpha of the Astral pack. You will wait for your turn."
Grey turned to face Derrick. "I know you are planning on having Annie sent away if she is not the woman you fell in love with, but I am saying it now that she is going nowhere."
Annie looked at Derrick. "Is that true? Where are you planning on having me sent away? All your promises, are they false?" Annie asked, looking at him with disbelief, "I can't believe I trusted you." She shouted, walking out of the room with Elder Thomas going after her.
Derrick looked at Grey and clenched his fist. Both had always been at loggerheads since they were kids.
"I am going to make you regret what you just did. If you want the throne badly, you must be ready to kill for it. Try killing me." Derrick snarled at Grey.
Grey walked out of Annie's room and headed towards his quarters. He kept thinking of what could be wrong with Annie. A part of him wanted to be there for her, while the other part wanted the throne. He was about to enter his chambers when he met Helena halfway. "What did you do? I thought you said you didn't care about her. She can stay in the pack. Really? Are you growing any feelings for her?"
Grey was not in the mood to talk to her. He looked at his stomach, and he saw he was bleeding. Feeling tired, he sat down in front of his chamber, looking weak. He looked at Helena and saw that his vision was blurry. Helena's words began to get muffled as he went into an unconscious state. He heard Helena rush towards him, shouting. His eyes closed as he felt a hand lift him to the floor.
Annie, on the other hand, walked out into the serene compound. Many of the servants wondered in awe and looked at her. "Sheila is back." They whispered among themselves. Elder Thomas wakes closer to Annie and places a hand on her shoulder. "Did you know? Did you even care that I would be sent away? Don't tell me you plan on using me just to help your so-called Alpha regain his sanity." She yelled at Thomas.
"Can you just calm down, Annie.? I don't know what Grey meant with what he said. Trust me when I say I am looking out for you. I am sure Derrick is not planning on sending you packing." Elder Thomas defended himself.
Annie sobbed gently and cleaned her teary eyes. "Who is Sheila, by the way?" Annie asked
"That is a long story, but I will be glad to share it with you if you don't mind," Thomas said, gently sitting down on the bench before him. He patted a space beside him and asked Annie to sit down.
"Am I dying? Doctor Jayden said that I am..." Annie looked at Thomas.
"You are not dying. We need Derrick to man up and take responsibility. Many kingdoms and clans would take an opportunity to strike at us if they noticed we were left unprotected by an Alpha."
"Grey is more than willing to lead the pack. While not letting him?" Annie asked. The thought of her not dying made her happy, and she knew there was still hope for her.
[SIGHED]
"Grey had been cursed by the moon goddess for trying to steal Sheila from Derrick. If he is to lead the kingdom, then we all would perish under his reign." Elder Thomas gently said it with a sigh and looked at the horizon.
"What do you mean curse? Can't it be undone? And why is loving someone a crime?" Annie asked with a bewildered expression.
"Like I said, it is a long story, but I guess I can quickly share it with you." Elder Thomas spoke gently and asked one of the maidservants beside him to get him a glass of water. Elder Thomas rested his back and began the story.

FLASHBACK
"Grey, stop this madness. She belongs to Derrick. They have been mated and will soon be getting married. How can you tell me she belongs to you?" Brandon shouted at him.
Brandon was the recent Alpha and also the father of Grey and Derrick. Derrick stormed into the chamber and looked at Grey.
"I don't care what happens, but I won't let you have her, she is mine. Besides, why her? There are many women in the pack you can choose to be your bride, so why, Sheila?"
"Don't ask me that question, Derrick. We both know she is my mate, as she belongs to you." Grey replied
Brandon sank into his chair and didn't know what to do. "
As tensions escalated in the chamber, Brandon struggled to maintain control over his sons. He had always hoped that they would work together to lead the pack, but now their rivalry threatened to tear everything he had worked for apart. He knew he had to find a way around all of this, but how?
"Enough!" Brandon's voice boomed, cutting through the heated exchange. "I will not have my sons fighting over a woman like common savages. You both know the rules. Sheila is bound to Derrick, and that is final. You can pick another woman of your choice, and I will have you marry her, but not Sheila."
Grey's jaw clenched in frustration, but he knew his father's words held weight. Still, he couldn't shake the feeling of injustice burning within him. "But what about my feelings, Father? Am I to ignore them while Derrick gets everything he desires? You have always sided with him since we were little, and I see that that hasn't changed one bit."
"How dare you say that to my face? I have always balanced my role as a father between the both of you."
Grey walked out of the room in anger. Brandon signaled for me to follow him.
"Are you also in on this madness?" Grey asked, looking at me.
"Your father is the Alpha, and only he has the final say. I believe you need to calm down and let your brother have his way. He is the next Alpha, and I would want you to calm yourself down." I said, gently placing my hand on him.
"Calm down? Did you just tell me to calm down when the woman I love is going to get married to my brother?"
I couldn't say anything, and I watched him walk away from me. Little did I know Grey had his intention.

PRESENT DAY
Annie listened intently as Elder Thomas recounted the events of the past. She yearned for more, but Elder Thomas was distracted when a maid ran over to him. "Beta Grey, he..he... he."
"He is what? Can you just say whatever it is you are dying to tell me?" He shouted at her. "He is unconscious." She prepared to say something while holding her breath. Elder Thomas and Annie walked towards the infirmary to have a look at him. Helena saw Annie walking towards them, and she threw a tantrum, telling Elder Thomas she was not welcome.
"I think you need to calm yourself, woman. Make way!." Thomas shouted in anger. He knew what was going on already. He was not ready to make the same mistake twice and, at the same time, was trying to make sure he protected the future of the kingdom.
"Grey! Grey!!." Annie shouted by his side. He looked at the deep cut in his stomach. "Is this from the fight?" She asked, looking at Elder Thomas's face.
"I guess." He replied
"Why is he not healing?" Annie asked in confusion.
