The summons this time was not quiet.
The horn sounded across Nightfang territory at midday, echoing through forest and stone alike. Wolves emerged from dens, training grounds, and patrol routes, all drawn toward the central clearing.
Public assembly.
Elowen heard it from the eastern ridge.
Even at that distance, the sound stirred something uneasy in her chest. Assemblies were rare. Necessary only when decisions affected the entire pack.
Or when authority needed to be displayed.
She knew, instinctively, this had something to do with her.
By the time she reached the edge of Nightfang territory, hidden among the trees, the clearing below was already full. Warriors lined the perimeter. Elders occupied the raised stone platform.
And at the center stood Kael.
Rigid. Controlled. Dangerous.
The Enclave representatives were present too, masked and unmoving.
The Trial preparations had begun.
Elowen remained concealed, unseen, listening.
“By decree of the Enclave,” one Elder announced, voice carrying across the crowd, “the wolf known as Elowen Ashfall will undergo the Proving at the next full moon.”
A murmur spread instantly.
Some voices skeptical.
Some curious.
Some openly hostile.
“She’s rejected,” someone called. “Why should we care if she survives?”
A ripple of uneasy laughter followed.
Elowen’s jaw tightened.
On the platform, Kael’s expression darkened.
Another voice rose. “If she fails, she’s exiled anyway. Saves us trouble.”
The laughter grew louder.
And something in Kael snapped.
“Enough.”
The single word cracked across the clearing like thunder.
Silence fell instantly.
Elowen’s breath caught.
Kael stepped forward, Alpha presence slamming into the crowd with crushing force. Wolves staggered under the weight of it, instinctively lowering their heads.
“You speak of her,” he said, voice low and deadly, “as if she were nothing.”
No one answered.
Kael’s gaze swept the crowd, fury barely restrained.
“Every wolf standing here,” he continued, “knows what she endured. Knows the strength it took to stand again.”
Shock rippled through the assembly.
An Alpha did not defend a rejected mate.
Especially not publicly.
One of the captains shifted uneasily. “Alpha, with respect, she is no longer pack.”
Kael rounded on him.
“And yet,” he snarled, “she shows more courage than half the wolves here hiding behind tradition.”
Gasps spread through the warriors.
Elowen stared, stunned.
This was not controlled authority.
This was personal.
An elder stepped forward sharply. “Alpha Nightfang, your words undermine order.”
Kael laughed bitterly. “Order? You mean comfort.”
The clearing froze.
“You would rather discard strength than admit your rules are outdated,” he continued. “You rejected her. Mocked her. Expected her to fade quietly.”
His voice rose.
“But she didn’t.”
A stunned silence fell.
Kael’s wolf pushed dangerously close to the surface, dominance rolling outward.
“And now,” he finished, voice rough with something dangerously close to emotion, “you fear what she might become.”
The Enclave elders stiffened.
“You forget yourself,” one warned coldly.
But the damage was done.
Warriors stared at one another.
The pack had just watched their Alpha lose composure over the very wolf he had publicly rejected.
Authority wavered.
Whispers erupted.
“He still cares…”
“Why defend her now?”
“Was the rejection a mistake?”
The seeds of doubt spread visibly.
Rovan stepped forward, voice sharp. “Enough. Assembly dismissed.”
The crowd dispersed quickly, tension lingering thick in the air.
On the platform, Kael stood alone, chest rising, control returning too late.
Too public.
Too revealing.
From the treeline, Elowen watched him.
Watched realization settle slowly across his features.
He had just shattered the image he’d built for years.
For her.
She should have felt vindicated.
Instead, something complicated twisted in her chest.
Because his anger hadn’t been about pride.
It had been fear.
And fear made Alphas dangerous.
As the clearing emptied, Kael’s gaze lifted straight toward the trees.
Toward her.
Even at this distance, recognition sparked.
For a heartbeat, neither moved.
Then Elowen turned and slipped back into the forest shadows.
Behind her, Kael exhaled heavily.
He had tried to protect her.
Instead, he had exposed them both.
And now the pack knew.
Their Alpha was no longer untouchable.
And Elowen Ashfall was no longer invisible.
