Nicholas's Pov
As the gun tumbled to the floor, my gut felt constricted.
"Kill Eddie." Lucien said.
"Boss, b-but Eddie is my mission partner!"
"Was, your mission partner."
I stopped in place, my gaze unmoved from Lucien's harsh ones. I knew how he could be, but I was prepared to give it a try.
I dropped to my knees and Lucien's gaze softened. It was absolutely reasonable that a subordinate should kneel to the master but I had always been the pompous i***t between Eddie and I.
Eddie was always the one kneeling when I made a dumb move or decision but today, I was the one kneeling.
My ego stung the longer I was on the floor but I was willing to take the sting as long as Eddie could live.
"Please," I pleaded, letting the desperation run into my voice. "Let me convince Eddie, he'll come back I promise you—"
"—I don't want anyone that walked out on my organization cheaply." A desperate gasp escaped my lips as I glanced at Lucien. He was determined.
"Since Eddie walked out on me first, it's only proper you take vengeance for my sake and snuff him out like the fool he is."
"Yes boss," I responded and cautiously picked up the rifle. "Then, I'll go do as you said."
"Sure, go."
I bowed to Lucien before stepping to the door at the exit, opening it, and strolling down the corridor.
'Eddie, you're such an idiot.' I thought as I dipped the revolver in my pocket.
'But there's no way I'm going to let you die.'
I withdrew my phone from my inner suit jacket and contacted Eddie, and as I expected. His phone was shut off.
But I had an idea where he could be, so I took off.
"Coastal Retreat," I instructed the driver as I hopped into the back seat.
It was quite considerable distance but I got there in time.
I halted at the plantation leading to Eddie's estate and rushed through the tall shrubs and trees whilst adequately avoiding the traps. I knew this place by hand. Eddie had taken me here before completing his mansion.
I didn't know how long I spent moving around but when I reached a reasonably free area that consisted just of knee-length grasses, I noticed Eddie in the near distance strolling away.
But he abruptly halted and turned around to me with a smile. "I can't believe you miss me so much you'd come to me without at least liquor and wine. Anyway," he stepped closer to me and flicked off the grasshopper I didn't notice dancing on the front of my suit jacket. "I don't have time for you today, Go. I'm eating supper with my soon-to-be wife."
"You i***t," I hit Eddie in the face out of reflex and he stumbled back, his eyes widening in disbelief.
When he gathered back himself he sighed and drew out a white hanky from his back pocket and wiped the blood that dripped down his nose.
"My, my, you still have such an explosive temper. My training you all these years seems to be no good, unlucky me."
Anger fuelled my veins at Eddie's stupidity and I grabbed him by the neck and roared, "YOU i***t! DON'T YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DEALING WITH? LOOK, JUST COME WITH ME— WE'LL GO BACK TO LUCIEN AND YOU'LL APOLOGIZE AND SAY YOU WERE NOT IN YOUR RIGHT MIND AND—"
"—No, Nicholas." Eddie slapped my hands away from his neck and from his icy demeanor, I could see that he was serious.
"I have promised Isabelle that I would be home for dinner. And Nicholas, you know I trust no one but you, right? So in the future, treat the things that I possess carefully."
"What are you talking about? Eddie, Lucien will murder you, so come back with me?"
Eddie only gave me a blank look so I knew I had no choice but to show him proof. I brought the revolver from out of my pocket and pointed it at Eddie but he offered no reply. It appeared as though he was staring at a point next to me, but just right as I was going to query what was happening, I heard a gunshot, and the next thing I saw was the blood of Eddie splashing upon me as he sank down to the ground, a pool of his blood underneath his head. But that was not from my pistol.
I looked behind only to discover a pickup containing Lucien who had a released A-27 in his palm with two men sitting in the backseat. The driver had a recompense look on his face. No doubt he was a first-timer on the job, which meant he was likely to die later.
My neck wobbled up and down and my lips contracted.
Lucien stepped out of his truck magnificently and clapped his hands lightly. "Aw, Nicholas. You're such a guaranteed dude. Even though it was difficult, as you and Eddie worked together for seven years you were willing to obey my order. Too bad though, I ruined your fun."
I bowed my head at Lucien and at the same time felt ashamed because Eddie was right on the floor and he was looking at me. It was clear now, what coward I was.
Lucien snatched the gun in my hand and patted me on the shoulder. "I give you authority to clear up the case. At least you got the chance to say goodbye to your best companion."
I was unable to say anything to Lucien even though I was shook with wrath. A passionate and expressive man— like Eddie would call me. I was immediately smitten with dishonesty and humility in front of Lucien.
The moment made me realize one thing, I was weak.
So weak I could not stand up for the man who stuck with me closer than a brother. And I felt ashamed of it.
Lucien drove off with his boys in the pickup.
I knelt in front of Eddie, dejected.
Like the coward that I was.
I couldn't even protect my own brother.
