Isabelle's Pov
"Are you sure you'll be able to stay alone here in this house?" The investigator questioned after accompanying me back to my mansion.
"Yes," I said. "Thank you for hearing me out."
"No worries. By tomorrow, I'll formally seek an autopsy report on the deceased."
I could feel the emotions welling up inside of me like a curve ball but I forced it back down and exhaled before offering the detective a courteous smile.
"Thank you for everything, detective."
"You're welcome," he handed me a card from his wallet. "Call me later."
I collected the card and he started to walk away.
That night, I headed to the dining table to have a look at the cookouts I had ordered in anticipation for supper with Eddie. I even planned for him to spend the night so I could be near him. How much I missed the naughtiness and pleasantry of his voice.
I didn't know how long I sat at the empty dining table, simply staring.
The next day, I called Detective Victor at 10am and he answered.
"Ma'am Isabelle? Been expecting your call."
"Hello Detective, pleasant morning?"
"Yes really, I was approved to apply for an autopsy report. I'll find out if the cause of the deceased's death is definitely due to a fall."
At the same moment, I heard the front door of my house being tampered with, and before I understood what was going on, the door sprang open and a group of bold police officers stepped in, along with a handsome man in a dark suit.
Through the phone still on my left ear, I heard someone speak to the detective.
"Just who gave you an authorized permission to be here?"
At the same moment, the man in a dark suit walked my way, religiously and rhythmically which sent shivers down my spine.
"Everyone search the house!" Just like that, the police officers were dispatched throughout my residence.
"Detective Victor," I murmured to the phone, "I'll talk to you later."
I stopped the conversation and took a step closer to the dark haired man with green eyes. His exterior was wild and charismatic opposed to Eddie's quiet and serene serenity.
As I thought that, I felt a sinking in my heart like I had just deceived Eddie.
"Who the hell are you?!" I exclaimed, and got a bit of joy when I noticed that the man in the suit was taken aback by my posture.
"No, the inquiry should be, how did you sneak into my house? Don't you know what you're doing is breaking and trespassing? All I have to do is call the police and you along with all those fakes disguised in police uniform will be arrested and sent behind prison precisely where you deserve!"
I gazed at the steadfast glare in the man's face and scoffed. Just what gave him the confidence to look at me that way.
"Hey," I yelled loudly. "Don't stare at me like that just because I'm a girl. I… can kill you." I said with gritted teeth even though deep inside, my heart wavered.
What girl wouldn't be afraid, after all, my house had just been broken into by a group of men, and I had no idea who they were or what they were wanted.
"Sir!" A police officer cascaded down the stairs holding a clear nylon containing a sort of white powder I had no idea of.
"Sir," as the police officer went over, he threw me a filthy look and diverted his attention to the man in the black suit.
"You were right, we found cocaine in her room—"
"—And even her kitchen," another police officer cut in from the back.
"W-what are you talking about?"
"That suggests she was under the effects of cocaine when she stated she saw a gunshot in her fiance's body.
"What are all of you saying?"
"We're from team B In the New York South Branch of the police. We located a drug vendor and while tracing him we found out you were one of the purchasers of this narcotic called cocaine,"
"That's nonsense—"
"—Were you emotionally abusive to your fiance before he died?"
"No," I bursted into tears at the last question even though I didn't want to. "I would never do that to Eddie, I loved him!"
"Nonsense. It indicates here on his will that this mansion will be given to his partner in business, Sir Nicholas, so what are you doing here in this house? Did you steal it?"
"No!" Tears were uncontrollably rolling down my cheeks at this moment.
All these accusations— I had no idea what was going on and where they got them from but they were utterly rubbish.
"I wonder why such a fine man would choose to marry someone like you, no wonder he died—"
"—That's enough," The man in the suit remarked to the officer and he stepped back regretfully.
I stared at all the critical eyes of the police and that was when I made up my mind. "You guys are merely speaking out of assumptions right? I have no idea how cocaine got into my house or what reason you have against me," I gazed squarely into the eyes of the green eyed-man before saying.
"Fine! I'll do a test to confirm I'm clean. Then we will sort out the accusation you have regarding me stealing this house. Just know, I have all the legal steps to establish that I'm the rightful owner of this house!"
"Okay."
"What?" I was scared by his response.
"Take a test at the clinic, lf you're neat I'll remove all charges against you. I'll even apologize."
I scoffed. "if you're wrong, I'll sue you for slandering as well as violation of private property."
"Deal."
I went to a designated hospital Mr Nicholas himself had picked for this cause and I willingly conducted the tests asked of me.
An hour later, the nurse came to us with the results.
I was so convinced that I was clean.
But as the nurse brought me the results and I read It myself, I felt my sight fade and before suddenly losing control of my body and passing out.
