KIERAN’S POV ​I rolled the dice. It was a six. "Beginner's luck," she teased. ​As we played, the room felt less like a prison and more like a home. ​For the first time in years, I felt a kind of peace I hadn't felt in a long time. Perhaps I had felt different ever since she came into my life. All I was thinking about right now was how to beat her. ​"I win!" she suddenly cheered, moving her last piece into the center. She jumped up, her robe swirling around her legs. I looked at the board, then at her. I had lost. Me, the man who never loses. And strangely, I didn't mind. ​"You cheated," I said, though I couldn't keep the hardness in my voice. ​"I did not!" she laughed and showed me a better move. We sat there for an hour, the only sound being the click of the dice and her laugh
