KIERAN’S POV
I rolled the dice. It was a six.
"Beginner's luck," she teased.
As we played, the room felt less like a prison and more like a home.
For the first time in years, I felt a kind of peace I hadn't felt in a long time. Perhaps I had felt different ever since she came into my life. All I was thinking about right now was how to beat her.
"I win!" she suddenly cheered, moving her last piece into the center. She jumped up, her robe swirling around her legs.
I looked at the board, then at her. I had lost. Me, the man who never loses. And strangely, I didn't mind.
"You cheated," I said, though I couldn't keep the hardness in my voice.
"I did not!" she laughed and showed me a better move.
We sat there for an hour, the only sound being the click of the dice and her laugh
