Chapter 2: The Mark Beneath the Skin

325 Words
Elara awoke to the scent of ash and lavender. The silk sheets clung to her damp skin as she sat upright in the massive bed of the Ashen Keep, a fortress nestled deep in the Blackpine Mountains. Moonlight spilled through the stained glass windows, casting fractured colors across the stone walls. Her heart raced—another dream, but not just a dream. A memory. One that wasn’t hers. Flashes of fire. Screams. A crimson seal etched in the air. She touched her chest, where the mark had burned into her flesh during the awakening at Elarion. It was no longer visible, but she felt it pulsing beneath her skin—alive. Like something watching. Waiting. “Nightmares again?” a voice came from the shadows. She turned sharply. Lucien. The vampire prince stepped into the pale moonlight, his coat undone, dark curls tousled from the wind. His gaze softened when he saw her. “You cried out.” Elara looked away. “They’re getting worse. I keep seeing a temple in flames... and a child’s voice calling my name.” Lucien approached slowly, taking a seat on the edge of the bed. “Your power is awakening too quickly. It’s no longer just blood magic, Elara. You’ve touched something older—something buried by the Pact.” She hesitated. “Then why does it feel like I’m being hunted by it?” Lucien’s eyes darkened, the glow of his irises flickering briefly. “Because you are. The mark isn’t just a seal—it’s a key. And there are those who would kill to ensure it’s never used.” Before she could ask more, a thunderous knock echoed from the hallway, followed by the urgent voice of Captain Thorn. “Your Highness—Elara. The western watchtower burns. The Witch Queen has sent emissaries. They demand an audience.” Elara’s pulse quickened. “Now?” Lucien rose, tension rippling through his frame. “Now.”
