Chapter 4: Court of the Damned

375 Words
The car sped through winding roads that coiled like serpents around the city’s jagged hills. Skyscrapers in the distance glowed against the blood-hued sky, but Elara couldn’t tear her eyes from the man beside her—Lucien Draeven. He hadn’t spoken since they left, his gloved hands resting still on his lap. Yet she felt the weight of his attention—his silence was louder than words. The Hidden City They arrived at a tunnel nestled between two crumbling ruins. As Lucien drove through, the scenery changed. The air grew colder. The lights dimmer. And when they emerged… The Veiled City stretched before her—an entire society hidden beneath the capital. Gas lamps floated above cobbled streets. Cathedrals rose like fangs. And every figure in the shadows watched her like prey. “This is the Court of the Damned,” Lucien said. “The seat of vampire diplomacy and power. You’ll be safe here—relatively.” Elara stepped out slowly. Every instinct in her screamed to run. But there was no going back now. Blood Recognizes Power The court chamber was more a cathedral than a council hall. Rows of blood nobles stood in silence as Lucien led Elara down the aisle. At the front stood Lady Serephine Vaal, the High Mistress of the Night Court. Ageless, veiled, and beautiful in a haunting way. “She bears the Bloodmark,” Lucien declared. Whispers erupted. Serephine stepped down from her throne. “You’re her,” she whispered. “The witch-born… the last bloodpact child.” Elara opened her mouth, but no sound came. The room closed in. Her knees buckled— Lucien caught her. But as she looked up, her eyes met another across the room. The Werewolf in the Court He stood half-hidden in a shadowed alcove—muscular, hooded, and furious. It was Kael, the same werewolf who watched her earlier. He growled under his breath. “You took her.” Lucien stiffened. “You have no place here, beast.” “She’s not yours.” Elara looked between them, her heart pounding. Lucien: cold, dangerous, seductive. Kael: wild, fierce, protective. Two predators. One prey. And something inside her stirred—a pull to both. Equal parts fear and desire.
