ELENA'S POINT OF VIEW
Most werewolves shifted into their animal forms for the very first time between the ages of thirteen and eighteen. Experiencing the initial transformation earlier or later than that window was quite uncommon. Once a person finally underwent their first shift, the community officially recognized them as an active member of the pack. They immediately started training sessions, participated in regular border patrols, and took on real responsibilities. New wolves also earned the right to attend the seasonal gatherings to search for their fated mates. These social events occurred four times every year, and the location shifted from one territory to another each season.
This particular quarter, the big event was taking place right here on our own home territory, which belonged to the Midnight Moon pack. Our group was not the largest territory in the region, and we probably did not even rank in the top five most powerful packs. Even so, we still controlled a fairly massive piece of land and had a population of three hundred to four hundred werewolves. We were quite popular among the other territories because our land sat right in the middle of the geographic map. That central location meant people did not have to travel very far to get here, so almost every surrounding pack always attended.
The specific themes and activities for these big weekend events always changed from year to year. In the past, the hosts had organized casual picnics, competitive sports days, formal dances, outdoor drive in movies, bowling nights, or ice skating trips. There had been a massive variety of entertainment options over the years. This time around, the current pack female leader and her close friend Melissa, who was married to the second in command, decided to do something different. They decided that a highly fantastical formal ball was the perfect theme.
They wanted a night filled with massive ballgowns and expensive suits. They wanted elegant classical music and giant crystal chandeliers hanging from the ceiling. The actual theme they chose was basically princes and princesses. The two women planned to use a very old abandoned mansion that sat on the edge of our land. The structure already looked exactly like a medieval castle. Laborers spent the past month renovating the entire place to get it ready for the big gathering. The pack would not host another gathering for a very long time, so the organizers wanted to make this night memorable.
I had never actually been allowed to attend a single gathering in my entire life. I experienced my very first shift when I was only twelve years old, which was much earlier than normal. When it happened, my own father beat me until I was within an inch of my life. He screamed that a worthless creature like me did not deserve to have a wolf spirit. Because of his anger, my shift was never officially recorded in the pack logs, and every single record of my existence basically vanished into thin air.
I was never allowed to go to the local school with the other kids. Melissa always claimed that the other children would bully me, so she said she was saving me from that pain. The reality was that I basically did not exist to anyone within the pack boundaries anymore. The adults never allowed me to leave the house, and they strictly ordered me to never shift into my wolf form. I did not even know how to use the pack mind link. That mental connection is something that usually comes naturally to every werewolf the moment they shift.
Things were going to be very different for this specific event. My younger sister Maddie had finally shifted earlier this year, so this would be her very first official gathering. I still had no idea how my name got thrown into the mix, but the pack leaders ordered me to go. The authority figures required Ty, Maddie, and me to attend the formal ball. I was not looking forward to the social interaction at all, but I was excited about the food. The simple thought of eating a full meal without getting kicked out of the room sounded heavenly. Usually, my family threw me out because they said my presence ruined the taste of their food.
Finding a lifelong fated mate was definitely not my top priority for the night. If anything, I just wanted to get the inevitable rejection over with as quickly as possible. My entire body was covered in deep scars that never fully healed over the years. I was also completely blind in one eye, and my name was not even registered on the official pack roster. No werewolf in their right mind would ever want a broken partner like me. The rejection was going to happen, and I knew it would hurt badly, so I just wanted the pain to pass. I was leaving the territory the very next morning anyway.
My father and Melissa had decided when I was only eight years old that I was old enough to start working. They sent me to a manual labor factory that operated just outside of the official pack boundaries. The managers of that factory used very shady hiring practices, which fit perfectly with my parents' plan to use me for money. Every day, my parents would drive me right up to the border line and drop me off on the dirt road. From that spot, I would walk the rest of the way to the factory doors by myself.
The factory operated on a strict schedule of three months of constant work followed by four months of total shutdown. That long break was probably the only reason I managed to survive the intense physical a***e my parents put me through. At the very least, the time away from the house kept my wolf spirit, Kai, relatively calm.
Every single penny of the money I earned at the factory went directly into my parents' hands. Over the years, however, I had secretly built up a completely separate life for myself outside of the pack territory. I had actually stopped working at that miserable factory a long time ago. My parents still believed I walked to that building every day because I always brought home a matching paycheck. They never asked questions about the job, and they never cared enough to check on me. My hard work completely funded the lavish lifestyle that Melissa enjoyed every day.
She absolutely refused to get a single speck of dirt under her fingernails because she was terrified of breaking them. Because of that fear, she did not have a real job other than gossiping with the other wealthy women in the pack. The money I brought home made up for everything my father lacked in his own income. That financial reality only made him despise me even more.
Auri?
The soft voice whispered through the wood of my bedroom door.
I blinked my eyes open and realized I must have fallen asleep on top of my blankets.
Yeah?
I heard the lock silently click open, and the door swung wide into the dim room.
Ty climbed up onto the edge of my small bed and handed me a thick sandwich and a cold glass of water.
He sat down next to my feet, his eyes scanning my face in the dark.
Are you okay?
I nodded quickly, taking a large bite of the food he brought me.
You will not be okay if father catches you in here right now.
He scoffed loudly at the warning.
At the very most, he would just give me a stern talking to.
He paused for a moment, his eyes filled with worry.
Are you absolutely sure that you are okay?
I am completely fine, Ty, I really am.
I chewed slowly, thinking about why our parents were suddenly forcing me to go to the party.
I think they just want to make sure that I look presentable for the gathering tomorrow night.
Kai pushed her mental energy onto my vision, allowing me to see through the darkness clearly.
I could see Ty staring anxiously at the closed bedroom door.
Are you worried about what will happen tomorrow?
He shook his head sideways and looked back down at my face.
If I find my fated mate tomorrow, I am going to leave this house immediately.
He looked down at his hands.
But who is going to sneak you food or make sure you have clean bandages when I am gone?
He sighed heavily.
Maddie is far too loud to ever do something like this.
I laughed quietly at his accurate description of our sister.
It was completely true.
She acted like a wild bull in a tiny shop and had absolutely no sense of stealth or quiet movement.
Well, I head out to the factory tomorrow morning anyway.
I reminded him gently.
So there is at least three months where I will not even be living in this house.
Then, after that time runs out, I guess I will just try my best to survive day by day.
You could always become a rogue wolf.
He said the words so softly that they were barely a breath.
I know for a fact that you have people on the outside who can help you escape.
He spoke so quietly that even with my close proximity, I barely caught the words.
If I did not possess sensitive werewolf hearing, I might have missed his suggestion entirely.
I could do that.
I admitted openly.
I have honestly thought about taking that path many times.
Ty turned his face toward me instantly, absolute shock written across his features.
Please do not look at me like that.
I pleaded softly.
Do you honestly not think I have considered the idea of actually being free from this place?
I have weighed all of my options over the years.
An escape has always been a real possibility in my mind.
I just really do not want to leave the two of you behind with them.
I worry that their anger will turn directly toward you and Maddie if I run away.
I am still your older sister, and it is my job to protect you.
He nodded slowly, a sad grimace crossing his face as I finished the last bite of the food.
I handed the empty glass of water back to him.
If you ever need help with anything at all, you know I am here.
I smiled warmly at his words.
I know you are, Ty, I really do know that.
Thank you for the food.
Again.
I gave him a small, cheerful chuckle to lighten the heavy mood.
Once he slipped back out of the room, I closed my eyes tightly and tried to go back to sleep.
Maybe we will finally find our own knight in furry armor at the ball tomorrow.
Kai mused happily inside my mind.
And then he will carry us far away from all of this misery.
I laughed mentally at her words.
You are being far too optimistic about our reality.
He is going to reject us on the spot, and then we can finally get on with our lives in peace.
You do not know that for sure, Elena.
Kai argued back, her voice filled with hope.
He might actually love us even more because of what we have been through.
We are completely one of a kind.
This time, I physically rolled my eyes in the darkness of my room.
We are definitely one of a kind.
We are the specific kind of wolf that absolutely nobody wants.
Now please go to sleep, Kai.
Otherwise, we are going to look like the living dead when the sun comes up in the morning.
She grumbled unhappily in the back of my mind.
Okay, I will stop talking.
But I am still going to hold out hope for a miracle tomorrow.
And that hopeful spirit is exactly what I love about you, Kai.
Deep sleep came to me soon after that conversation.
I slept completely dreamlessly for the rest of the night, which was a very rare occurrence for me.
Usually, my mind was filled with terrifying nightmares about my father.
I did not wake up again until a loud, aggressive banging started echoing against my wooden door.
The sudden noise caused me to bolt upright in my bed, my heart hammering against my ribs.
The morning sun was streaming through the cracks in my window, lighting up the dust motes in the air.
Get out of bed right now, you lazy creature.
Melissa screamed through the door.
We have an immense amount of work to do before the guests arrive at the territory line.
I slid my feet out of bed and stood up on the cold floor boards.
My muscles ached from the previous day of chores, but I knew better than to keep her waiting.
If I took too long to open the door, my father would surely come up the stairs next.
I quickly smoothed down my wrinkled clothing and unlocked the heavy latch.
Melissa stood in the hallway, her hands resting flat on her hips.
She looked me up and down with an expression of pure disgust on her face.
You look like an absolute mess.
She snapped, turning her back to walk down the narrow hallway.
Go straight down to the basement and bring up the heavy boxes of decorations.
Do not touch anything else in the kitchen, and do not let the guests see you in that state.
I followed her down the stairs, keeping my eyes fixed firmly on the floor.
The main living room was already buzzing with frantic energy as pack members hurried inside and out.
Giant boxes of gold trim and silk ribbons sat stacked against the walls.
The entire pack house smelled of rich food and expensive floral perfume.
I navigated through the crowd of busy people, trying my best to remain completely invisible to everyone.
Two young warriors brushed past me, nearly knocking me off my balance without even glancing back.
To them, I was just a shadow moving through the house.
I reached the heavy wooden door that led down into the dark basement structure.
The air down there was cold and damp, smelling heavily of old earth and stored stones.
I lifted the first massive box of decorations, my muscles straining against the immense weight.
As I carried the load back up the stairs, I heard the loud sound of laughter coming from the front yard.
Maddie was standing outside, surrounded by a group of young wolves who were praising her recent shift.
She looked absolutely radiant, her hair shining in the bright morning sunlight.
Ty stood a few feet away from her, watching the crowd with a careful expression.
He caught my eye through the open window and gave me a very subtle nod of encouragement.
I quickly looked away before anyone else noticed the brief silent interaction between us.
I carried the box into the main dining room and set it down softly on the long table.
Melissa was busy ordering three other women around, pointing at the high corners of the ceiling.
Put the silver ribbons over there.
She commanded loudly.
It needs to look absolutely perfect for the visiting Alphas.
I turned around to head back down to the basement for the remaining boxes.
Before I could reach the door, a heavy hand gripped my shoulder with crushing force.
The pain shot straight down my spine, causing my breath to catch in my throat.
You better not ruin this night for your sister.
My father hissed directly into my ear, his breath smelling of stale tobacco.
If you make a single mistake or embarrass this family in front of the neighboring packs, you will pay.
Do you understand me, girl?
I nodded quickly, my eyes watering from the intense pressure of his fingers on my collarbone.
Yes, father, I understand completely.
He shoved me away roughly, sending me stumbling against the door frame.
Get back to work and stay out of my sight until it is time to leave for the castle mansion.
I slipped down into the quiet darkness of the basement, trembling slightly from the brief encounter.
Kai stirred unhappily within my mind, her digital anger pulsing against my thoughts.
We should just run away right now.
She whispered darkly.
We do not owe these terrible people anything at all.
We cannot leave Ty and Maddie behind to face his anger.
I reminded her silently, gripping the edges of another heavy box.
We just have to survive this one night, and then we can leave for the factory ground tomorrow.
I spent the next several hours carrying heavy supplies back and forth across the territory.
The physical labor kept my mind occupied, preventing me from panicking about the upcoming ball.
As the afternoon sun began to dip below the horizon, the entire atmosphere shifted.
The casual work clothes were replaced by beautiful formal wear as people prepared for the event.
I walked back up to my tiny room to see what my parents had provided for me to wear.
A simple, faded black dress hung on the back of my door.
It was clearly an old discarded garment from one of the wealthier families in the pack.
The fabric was worn thin, but at least it was clean and free of obvious holes.
I changed into the dress quickly, watching my reflection in the small cracked mirror on the wall.
The scars on my arms were fully visible, but there was nothing I could do to hide them now.
A soft knock sounded on my door, much gentler than the aggressive banging from this morning.
Elena, it is time to go.
Ty called out softly.
The cars are waiting out front.
I opened the door and found him standing there in a neat black suit that fit him perfectly.
You look nice, Ty.
I said sincerely.
He smiled softly, though the worry never truly left his young eyes.
You look beautiful, Elena.
Do not let anyone tell you otherwise tonight.
We walked down the stairs together and joined the rest of the family outside the house.
Maddie was wearing a stunning emerald green gown that flowed gracefully around her ankles.
Our parents looked at her with immense pride, completely ignoring my presence as I climbed into the back.
The drive to the renovated mansion was short, but the tension inside the vehicle was incredibly thick.
As we approached the property, the sheer scale of the event became fully apparent.
Bright lights illuminated the stone walls of the old castle, making it look like something from a fairy tale.
Hundreds of beautifully dressed werewolves were already walking up the grand stone steps.
The sound of classical violin music floated through the crisp evening air.
We parked the car and joined the long procession of guests heading toward the main entrance doors. My father kept a firm grip on Maddie's arm, presenting her proudly to the passing wolves.
I walked several paces behind them, trying to blend into the shadows of the large stone pillars.
As we stepped through the massive double doors, the true grandeur of the room took my breath away.
Giant crystal chandeliers hung from the high ceiling, casting a warm golden glow over the crowd.
Hundreds of wolves from dozens of different packs were laughing and talking throughout the space.
The scent of various territories mixed together in the air, creating a confusing wall of aromas.
I felt completely overwhelmed by the intense sensory input, my wolf tracking everything around us.
Let us go find the food tables immediately.
Kai suggested, trying to distract me from my growing anxiety.
That is the only reason we agreed to come to this place anyway.
I nodded slightly and began navigating my way toward the back of the massive ballroom space.
Long tables were stacked high with every kind of delicious food imaginable.
There were roasted meats, fresh fruits, rich cheeses, and massive trays of sweet pastries.
I pulled a small plate toward myself and began selecting a few items to eat quietly.
A group of high ranking wolves from a neighboring territory gathered near the table, talking loudly.
I moved a few steps away to avoid drawing any unwanted attention to my scarred arms.
As I chewed on a piece of sweet bread, a sudden shift occurred in the air around me.
The normal chatter of the ballroom seemed to fade into a strange, distant hum.
A powerful, intoxicating scent suddenly cut through the heavy wall of perfumes and food aromas.
It smelled of fresh pine trees after a heavy rain and dark, rich winter earth.
The sheer intensity of the smell made my knees feel incredibly weak.
Kai suddenly roared to life inside my chest, her mental voice screaming with absolute certainty.
Mate!
She cried out, her energy pushing hard against my own vision.
He is here in this room right now!
My heart began to race violently as I looked around the crowded ballroom floor.
I tried to follow the powerful scent, my eyes scanning through the sea of suits and dresses.
The smell was getting stronger by the second, indicating that the person was moving closer to my position.
I took a step backward, an overwhelming sense of panic mixing with the strange bond connection.
What if he looks at my scars and rejects me in front of this entire crowd of people?
The terrifying thought echoed through my mind as I backed up against a stone pillar.
The heavy scent of pine and rich earth was completely overpowering my senses now.
I turned my head toward the grand staircase that led down into the main ballroom floor.
A tall, muscular man was walking down the steps, surrounded by a group of powerful looking warriors.
He possessed dark hair and striking, intense eyes that scanned the crowd with absolute authority.
The air around him practically vibrated with pure Alpha power and dominance.
The moment his eyes swept across the room, they locked directly onto my frozen form.
A look of intense realization flashed across his handsome features as he stopped on the stairs.
He began moving through the crowded room straight toward me, parting the sea of guests with ease.
My breath completely caught in my throat as the powerful alpha wolf closed the distance between us.
Would this beautiful, powerful alpha leader actually accept a broken and scarred wolf like me?
