Chapter 3: The Blood Moon Festival

1749 Words
The Blood Moon hung low and heavy in the night sky, a swollen crimson eye bleeding a violent red glow over the Crescent Moon territory. Down in the main clearing, the festival was already descending into a chaotic, feral frenzy. The suffocating heat of roaring bonfires clashed with the cool autumn wind, sending thick plumes of grey smoke up into the canopy of the pines. The air was a toxic, overpowering cocktail: the greasy smell of roasting venison, the sharp sting of cheap, spilled bourbon, and the heavy, suffocating musk of three hundred wolves shedding their human inhibitions. I stood at the very edge of the tree line, a ghost wrapped in a faded, oversized black hoodie. The shadows swallowed me whole, exactly where I wanted to be. From my hidden vantage point, I watched the pack. Gammas stripped off their shirts, their bodies slick with sweat as they wrestled in the dirt, their eyes flashing yellow as their wolves scratched at the surface. Lower-ranking Omegas scurried nervously between the fires, carrying massive wooden platters of raw and cooked meat, their heads bowed in constant, fearful submission. It was a raw display of hierarchy, a brutal food chain that I had been at the absolute bottom of for a decade. Not for much longer, I thought, letting the cool wind kiss the angry red mark still fading on my cheek from Selena’s slap yesterday. My gaze drifted past the drunken brawls and the howling teenagers, locking onto the massive, flat-topped granite boulder at the center of the clearing—the Alpha’s Rock. Kael stood at the edge of the stone, soaking in the worship of his people. He had stripped down to a tight black tank top, his heavily muscled arms flexing every time he raised his horn of ale to the crowd. Under the crimson light of the Blood Moon, his storm-gray eyes were dark, dilated, and buzzing with power. Tonight was his night. The night his father formally stepped down, handing the Alpha command entirely over to him. And clinging to him, exactly as she had been in the hallway, was Selena. She wore a custom-made crimson dress that left absolutely nothing to the imagination. The silk clung to her curves like a wet second skin, the high slit exposing her entire thigh every time she shifted her weight. She was putting on a masterclass in performative submission. As I watched, her hands slid up Kael’s chest, her perfectly manicured nails tracing the hard lines of his abdomen before slipping daringly under the hem of his shirt. She pressed her breasts against his arm, tilting her neck back to expose her throat—and the jagged, purple claim marks Kael had left there. It was a deeply suggestive, highly public display of ownership. Kael responded on pure instinct. His large hand clamped down on her bare hip, his fingers digging possessively into her flesh, pulling her flush against his groin. Selena let out a breathy, theatrical moan that was entirely audible over the crackling fires. But it wasn’t their cheap display of lust that made my blood run cold. It was what rested in the deep plunge of Selena’s dress, gleaming against her skin. My mother’s silver moonstone. Under the light of the Blood Moon, the ancient pendant seemed to hum. It emitted a faint, pearlescent glow, casting a soft, purifying aura over Selena. I could hear the whispers of the pack members gathered near the rock. "Look at her... the Goddess truly blessed her." "I felt my bruised ribs heal just walking past her earlier. She’s a true Holy Maiden." "An Alpha and a divine healer. Our pack is going to be unstoppable." I sneered in the darkness. Idiots. The whole lot of them were blind, gullible idiots. They were practically worshiping a thief who was leaking off the residual power of a murdered Silver Moon Queen. If the pendant hadn’t been dormant, masking its true Lycan frequency, the sheer pressure of it would have snapped Selena’s fragile neck hours ago. Suddenly, a sharp, jagged pain violently pierced my chest. I sucked in a harsh breath, my hand flying up to grip the fabric of my hoodie over my heart. The mate bond. It didn't feel like the golden, warm thread of destiny the pack elders always preached about. Because Kael had actively suppressed and rejected it for two years, our bond had festered. It felt like a rusted, barbed-wire chain hooked directly into my sternum. And right now, with Kael deeply intoxicated by power and lust, his wolf was agitated, pulling mindlessly on that rusted chain. The biological demand of the bond was disgusting. It whispered in the back of my mind, urging me to step out of the shadows, to march up to the Alpha Rock, to tear Selena away from him, and bare my neck to my true mate. Submit, a weak, pathetic voice echoed in my head. He is yours. You are his. "Shut up," I whispered out loud, my voice vicious and completely devoid of warmth. I closed my eyes and dug my fingernails into my palms until crescent-shaped moons bled into my skin. I used the physical pain to drown out the biological pull. I visualized a heavy iron door slamming shut over the bond, locking it away. Slowly, the pathetic urge faded, replaced by the familiar, terrifying heat of the sealed entity beneath my blood. It thrummed in response to the Blood Moon, a silver-hot fire licking at my veins, eager to be let out, eager to rip this entire pack to shreds. I took a deep, steadying breath, forcing the heat back down. I couldn't afford to lose control now. The plan had to be executed perfectly. I glanced over my shoulder, into the pitch-black expanse of the woods behind me. About a mile out, buried at the base of a hollowed-out oak tree, was a black duffel bag. It held a change of clothes, a hunting knife, all the cash I had managed to steal from Kael’s study over the past year, and a map of the neutral territories. The border patrols were thin tonight. Half the guards were drunk on the Alpha’s dime. It was the perfect night to disappear forever. But I couldn't just leave. Not yet. If a wolf ran away without officially severing the mate bond, the Alpha could use the tether to track them down anywhere on the continent. Worse, the lingering, unrequited pull could eventually drive a lone wolf insane, causing their organs to shut down from the stress of separation. I needed Kael to break it. I needed him to formally, verbally sever the tie using Alpha command. Only then would the rusted chain be completely shattered, leaving no trace for him to follow. And tonight, I knew he would do it. His ego demanded an audience. He wouldn't just quietly reject me in an office; he wanted to put a crown on Selena’s head and publicly execute my dignity to solidify his absolute rule. He thought he was handing me a death sentence. He didn't know he was handing me the keys to my cage. BOOM. The heavy, rhythmic pounding of the ceremonial war drums suddenly echoed through the clearing, instantly cutting through the noise of the crowd. The drunken laughter died. The wrestling Gammas froze, scrambling to their feet and brushing the dirt off their knees. The Omegas quickly backed away, melting into the shadows. Within seconds, a suffocating silence fell over the Crescent Moon Pack, save for the crackling of the massive bonfires. The festival had reached its peak. The ascension was over. It was time for the Alpha’s first official decree. On the granite rock, Kael stepped forward. He gently pushed Selena slightly behind him—a subtle, protective gesture that made my stomach turn—and looked out over his kneeling pack. The Alpha aura rolled off him in suffocating, heavy waves. It was a tangible pressure, forcing the wolves in the clearing to lower their heads even further. It hit me a second later, a heavy invisible hand trying to force my spine to bend. I locked my knees. I kept my chin perfectly level. I was the only person in the entire territory not bowing. "My pack," Kael’s voice boomed, amplified by his wolf, echoing against the trees. "Tonight, the Blood Moon witnesses a new era for the Crescent Moon. An era of absolute strength. An era where we no longer carry dead weight!" A vicious murmur of agreement rippled through the crowd. "An Alpha is only as strong as his Luna," Kael continued, his voice dripping with venomous intent. "And the Moon Goddess, in her infinite wisdom, has blessed us with a Holy Maiden. A wolf of unparalleled power and grace." He reached back, grabbing Selena’s hand and pulling her forward to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with him. The pack erupted into frantic cheers and howls. Kael raised a single hand. The silence returned instantly, razor-sharp and pregnant with anticipation. "But before I can officially crown my Luna," Kael said, his voice dropping an octave, turning dark and deadly cold. "There is a rotting disease in this pack that must be cut out." He didn't look at the crowd. He didn't scan the faces of his warriors. Instead, Kael’s storm-gray eyes snapped directly across the clearing, slicing through the smoke and the firelight, and locked flawlessly onto the patch of deep shadow where I was standing. He had known exactly where I was the entire time. The rusted chain connected us. His eyes were merciless, completely stripped of any lingering empathy or hesitation. He was looking at me like I was an insect waiting to be crushed under his boot. "Elara." My name left his lips not as a call, but as an Alpha Command. The sheer force of the order hit the crowd, forcing the sea of bodies to instantly part down the middle, creating a wide, dirt path that led directly from my hiding spot in the shadows to the base of the Alpha Rock. Every single head turned. Three hundred pairs of glowing, predatory eyes locked onto me. The trap was sprung. The stage was set. I didn't tremble. I didn't cry. I pulled the hood of my oversized sweater back, letting the crimson light of the Blood Moon hit my face. I stepped out of the shadows, a cold, razor-sharp smile cutting across my lips. Let's get this over with.
