Chapter 6 ~ Xavier Knight

986 Words
JULIA It has almost been a week since I transmigrated into this world. I have spent most of my time alone in my room, reading whatever books I could find, surfing the net, and scrolling through news articles to gather information about the place I now live in. At first glance, this world seemed like a replica of the one I came from, with the same technological level, similar economic and social policies, and inhabitants that look exactly like humans. But the deeper I dug, the clearer it became that this world is nothing like the one I belong to. It may look normal on the surface, but it is home to those fantasy creatures that existed only in folklore back in my hometown. Here, beings like werewolves, vampires, and witches walk among humans, disguised in plain sight. Werewolves can shift between their human and wolf forms, vampires are immortal, forever frozen in the peak of their youth and ethereal beauty, and witches can cast all kinds of spells. Though they are apparently different and should have every reason to clash, they have strangely been cooperating for years to protect their secret from humans. The werewolves live in packs ruled by an Alpha, divided into several large and small communities spread all over the world. Despite the distance, they are united by their devotion to their mates and to the Moon Goddess who created them in pairs. They usually choose secluded places, far from human reach- dense forests, dangerous mountains, and all those places humans avoid and label as “cursed” or “unsafe.” They are the children of the Moon Goddess, blessed with the ability to shift between human and beast at the age of 12, a gift that grants them incredible speed, enhanced senses, and deadly agility. Unlike humans, among whom only a few are fortunate enough to meet someone who truly understands and connects with them at a spiritual level (their soulmate), wolves are very lucky in this matter. They are destined to meet their fated mates at the age of 18, when they officially come of age. For werewolves, the concept of soulmates is sacred. They consider it their utmost duty and responsibility to love, protect, and care for their mates with everything they have. A wolf whose mate dies experiences a pain comparable to having their soul ripped to pieces. Most of them simply follow their mates into death, while the ones who survive are left to live a life that feels far worse than dying. The more I read about how important a mate is to a werewolf, the more I wonder what the author was thinking when she made one of her male leads mateless.Born as the Alpha heir and the only child of the strongest and largest pack in the entire werewolf community , the Dark Knights , Xavier Knight carried the heavy weight of expectations from both his parents and his people. He did not disappoint them. While other children transformed into their beast form at the age of 12, he was strong enough to do the same at just 8. His wolf form was a rare silver-white wolf with forest-green eyes, named Emir, who later became his closest friend and constant companion. As he grew up, Xavier turned into a tall, handsome man with the strength of a battalion commander and the calm, composed mind of a scholar. He was gentle and polite, though not exactly humble, and he worked relentlessly. Because of his talent and effort, he succeeded his father and became Alpha at the young age of 16. Everything seemed to be going well for Xavier, but fate dealt him a cruel blow when he still had not found his mate even at the age of 28. In werewolf terms, that usually means one’s mate is dead. Everyone around him believed that too. Some even suggested that he should move on and choose someone else. But Xavier always refused, repeating the same words over and over again: “No, she isn’t dead. I can see her… often… in my dreams.” He clung to that belief desperately, as if saying it aloud could somehow ease the agony and longing that constantly gnawed at his heart. Xavier kept waiting for his non-existent mate for years , in loneliness, in pain, in silent, suffocating sorrow. Over time, people started calling him delusional and mad.The benevolent, kind Alpha slowly faded, replaced by a broken man who flinched at the mere mention of “destiny.” He would lash out at anyone who dared to mock mates or the bond blessed by the Moon Goddess. His people began to fear him, and even he could no longer recognize the person he had become. After everything Xavier went through, the author suddenly stopped focusing on his story and turned the spotlight toward the love lives of the other male leads instead. As the story progressed, it became more and more infuriating to watch the other three male leads find happiness with their respective destined mates, while Xavier was left to struggle alone. Every full moon, the pain in his chest reached its peak, and he would lose control, becoming nothing but a beast howling in unbearable agony for his missing mate. The part that truly shattered him and broke me as a reader , was when Emir, his lifelong friend and wolf companion, finally passed away after he could no longer bear the shared pain of their bond. It was a devastating blow to Xavier. He never recovered from the grief of losing Emir. Years of longing and heartache had already hollowed his body and soul from the inside, and soon after, he followed his wolf into the underworld. After reading that part of the novel, I simply could not continue. I closed the book, dropped the story, and to this day I still do not know what happened next.
