A FIRE RECOVERY
Liz was inches within hitting a car as she turned into Camilla’s house. Flashing lights blinded her as fire engines, an ambulance, and police cars surrounded the house. Firefighters were hosing down the front part of the house while other firefighters seemed to have gone inside the front door. Was Matthew in trouble? She could barely breathe as her steps led her to Camilla who was arguing with a police officer. “Maam, you can’t go in there. It’s not safe. Let the firefighters do their job.”
“But that’s my brother in there. You have to get him out. He saved us.” She rubbed at her tears and had her arm around a weepy Mariana. They turned to Liz, and instantly, Camilla wrapped her arms around her while Mariana did the same.
