CHAPTER 13 FRIENDLY BANTER Matthew stood, cross-armed in his sister’s kitchen while he fixated on Liz’s sandwich-making skills. She dabbed butter on the bread shaped in circles then added colourful sprinkles on to the bread. She squashed the two bread slices together, and with long, dainty fingers and bright red, manicured nails, handed it over to Mariana on a small plastic plate. Mariana’s eyes widened. “Oh wow! That’s nice. Thank you, Liz.” Liz put her hands together and beamed. “Anytime, Mariana. Now eat!” She headed over to Matthew. She stood by his side; her eyes focused on his niece. The sweet scent of flowers and spices penetrated his senses. He became aware of the slender curve of her body in the fitted pantsuit she was wearing and the nurturing way she handled his niece.
