"What are you doing here?" Gwen barked and my head sank in shame.
Even if I wanted to change my mind, it was too late. I already signed the divorce paper so there was no going back for me now. Moving out of the Romano's mansion was my biggest mistake.
It was evident from how Nikolai agreed to the divorce without hesitation that I was nothing but unwanted. I allowed my pride to take control. And so, for the past three hours, I wandered around the streets with nowhere to go.
When I reached the end of the road, hell; my father's house became my only option.
"I have nowhere else to go, Gwen. Just let me in." I pursed my lips unhappily and said.
She's standing by the doorway currently towering over me. She rarely showed any mercy. Her presence alone was enough to stir fear in me and counter any chance I could have had to get in.
Gwen threw her head back and laughed. "Sorry but that's impossible."
Her condescending eyes told me all I needed to know. The exact moment Evelyn brought her to life was when I lost my position as a daughter in this house. I was the obstacle that left only to return again.
Unfortunately, I'm back. I don't care what stunt she pulls, my feets are wobbling and I need somewhere to lay my head before I collapse.
"You realize this is my father's house too?" I asked, feeling the need to refresh her memory. I don't even want to be here. If things hadn't fallen apart, I know how immensely my life would have changed.
"It was. Until you got yourself pregnant and became a disgrace to his name. How dare you show your face?" She looked at me with her brows arched high and then scanned me from head to toe. The gritting of her teeth asserting her annoyance.
"Oh, seriously? You knew I was pregnant yet you asked me for father's hospital bill, Gwendolyn. The source of that same money was none of your business. And now when it landed me into trouble, I won't even have a roof under my head?" My voice was filled with frustration.
My heart sank as I watched her become even more merciless. I had imagined stealing such big amount of money would earn me her leniency. However, I never expected her to indirectly accuse me of a******y.
How much did she forgot? I don't mind standing out here in cold, reminding her I had made enough sacrifice to award every of the steps I take into my father's house worthy.
"Oops, I was wondering where my lowly classless sister got the money from. Such a pity!" She sighed like it was a normal occurrence. Then she proceeded to slam the door on my face, and I could have let her if a certain voice hadn't triggered me.
I shoved my worn-out shoe in between the door before it could jam close. Gwen's face flared red with anger as she realized I was now with the upper hand. I beared the pain and sucked in a silent breath, anything to discern whose voice that was.
"C'mon, a pregnancy can't stop one from a******y. Little wonder she ran away from home."
I showed no reaction as I overheard my step mother's harsh and fierce voice from inside the house.
"I have Gwen. She's more than enough." And there it goes, my father's harsh comment.
Their condemnation didn't go lost on me, but I couldn't care less about that. I was used to it. Except a few hours was all it took for a surgery to occur and heal, I find no reason why my father should be home right now.
My heart bled. Fat tears escaped my eyes, but I didn't let out a single sob. I calmly slipped my aching leg from the door where it was hooked. A step was all it took to climb the threshold and match Gwen's height.
Our eyes locked. Hers unremorseful while mine mirrored the ocean, streaming down my face and hindering my sight.
"It was the money I lost my sincerity for. Kindly refund it or else, you—" I stammered, my voice hardly leaving my throat. I rushed towards her and gripped her arm only for her to shake off my grasp. I didn't dare register the disgusting look on her face.
"It's too late." She let out a slight scoff, her eyes twinkling with delight.
My eyebrows knotted together, taken aback those words were actually coming out of her mouth. To say that I was stunned was an understatement.
"What did you just say?" I chuckled, unable to help it. Gwen has the funniest humor. Apparantly, the one thing she's good at was telling the biggest lie with a straight face and who knows, this could be one of it.
"Trust me, it was fun gambling it away. Though I ran out of luck and lost to those petty opponents, the adrenaline was worth it." She chirped, closing her eyes as if to relieve the moment.
I could feel bile rising from my gut. Although, I was enraged, I restricted myself from raising a finger on her. I stormed straight into the streets and went lost in my head.
There was nothing left of me. There was nothing more I could do.
Nikolai was right. I thought that was inhumane of him to say but he was right to offer me such a priceless advice. I dare harbor a baby in my stomach when I can't even cater for myself.
Hours passed. The sky became darker, and night approached. I didn't take a look at my surrounding nor do I care about where my legs are leading me.
Only when my legs gave up on me was I aware I had reached the end of the tunnel.
My thighs wobbled and I collapsed on the cold ground. I saw the headlights of an incoming vehicle and ripped my eyes closed. Aware of what was coming, I smiled painfully in anticipation.
A shadow fell upon my body screaming for help though the figure's voice sounded muffled.
Besides, my prayers were answered when I finally succumbed to the darkness that surrounded me.
