One Month Later
"Mr. Davis, listen. As much as the bills are settled, we shall provide the perfect luxurious materials for your wedding."
When the call ended, I sank back against the swivel chair, and sighed heavily thinking I could finally get a minute to myself when the door opened, and my assistant walked into my mini-office with another pile of files.
"Good morning, ma'am." She gave a deep bow by the door before heading over to drop the files on my desk.
"Morning, Vivian. I believe that's all for today?" I acknowledged her greeting and I inserted my concern afterwards, my body and soul practically weeping as a result of the sleepless nights.
My reality is like a daydream to me. If someone had told me I would be in the position I am today, I would have spat in the person's face for feeding me with such a blatant lie.
Now, here I am. One month, and I can fully say I am proud of myself for where I got and I know he remains proud of me too. Yes, Austin.
If it weren't for him, I wouldn't even be alive today. He took me in despite me being a pauper. He fed and clothed me, without minding my pregnancy was another huge burden on him.
If only I had a cent, I could have said I hypnotized him. With the money he gave to me, this fashion design office came to life and even though I don't have a big name yet, I'm well known in New York City.
I am hoping to expand my business as time goes by, and make Austin feel fulfilled and proud he never wasted his money on me. I must say, it's rare finding someone with such a good heart.
"Yes, ma'am." She replied and I can finally breathe. She left and shut the door behind her while I got back to work.
I barely sleep a wink. I get to work by 7AM and call it a day at exactly 8PM, or longer if an emergency task comes in. I refused to let Austin and I eat takeout each single day simply because of my state, so I have to do the cooking when I get home.
In short, this job is taking a huge toll on me, but I'm never giving up. And yes, I still live with Austin. I have the money to rent my own apartment now, but just couldn't.
I once considered it but couldn't bring myself to. Even though he wouldn't force me to stay back, I felt like a selfish bastard abandoning him.
"No. No, Serina. Get rid of those now." I heard the sound of clicking heels, followed by a couple of yells before my office door was flung open.
I quickly unsheathed my pen, the only weapon I could find, and pointed it her way, "Don't come any closer, Carmine!"
My two-week old new friend. Unlike me, she comes from a wealthy family, and happens to be the last heir to her father's properties.
She owns a lot of exotic accessories and numerous flashy cars, together with her gorgeous face that has both bachelors and married men swooning, compared to me. An average heavily pregnant Serina Stone.
Even if I was a fan of accessories, long years of not owning one has made me so disinterested in them, thus; I only own a few necessary ones.
I can say the only area I had luck was the face aspect. Over the years, I have received many compliments on my looks but none were enough to earn me a boyfriend. Well, who would want someone living as a slave in her father's house?
Now that ought to be the time for me to enjoy all I wasn't privileged to, my mistake of six months ago ruined it all. Moreso, from my experience with Nikolai, the only man I have ever slept with, I don't mind being a single mother, till whenever.
"Stab me, please. The baby might then never have an Aunt but at least, I would have made sure her workaholic mother keeps her alive." She slammed her Versace handbag on my desk for a dramatic effect and stormed toward me.
I rose and etched tightly against my chest the most essentials. My tablets and sketchbook; her targets, desperately trying to protect them and not let them reach her hold, else, she ruins it. Like she did, once.
"Please, Carmine. Just this once." I groaned as she stopped before me, arms crossed below her big breasts. Argh, she's frowning yet looked this cute?
"Same thing you said yesterday, last week, last two weeks too?" She arched her brow high, disbelief running across her unrelenting eyes.
"Just spare me this once. C'mon, you're getting too overprotective." I intentionally challenged, staring away from her to hide my traitorous smile.
"Over you? Hell no. For my baby? Yes, can't be more accurate." Face gleaming with pride, she bent to reach the height of my stomach, then proceeded to plant kisses on it for a straight one minute.
Like a statue, I simply waited for her to finish for the sake of my things that were in stake.
After what felt like a decade, she straightened up and turned to round the desk. Thinking I was finally out of trap for today, I was about to take my seat when a hand came over my shoulder and spun me around.
"Be careful, okay? You wouldn't want her reporting your rebelliousness to me, once more." She said, running her hand down my hair and smoothening it in such a way that made me chuckle.
To her she's sounding a warning and am probably peeing my pants in fear.
"Yes, ma'am." I emitated a husky tone and we both laughed, the next three hours before she left becoming yet again one of my cherished moments.
I have never had a friend before. I met her at a big art audition I went with Austin, and after countless gossips between each other regarding how everything was starting to bore us out as the organizer has refused to show up, we realized we clicked.
It was a surprise someone of her status would want to have anything to do with me. When she learnt of how I came about with my pregnancy, she wasn't judgemental but rather stood as a big support.
Crazy enough, Carmine already decided my baby's gender and would throw all sorts of tantrums if I were to stress myself out.
I clocked out of work immediately it struck eight o'clock. I was about to insert the key in the lock when I realized the door was open. I stumbled in, dumping my heels and handbag somewhere around before slumping on the nearest couch.
Why was the house empty? Above all, why would Austin leave the house without closing the door? That too, with the Tv left on.
Feeling so sleepy, my eyes were starting to close on their own and I meant to sank deeper into the couch for a comfortable sleep when my ears perked up and I immediately sat upright.
I froze, staring hard at the news on the Tv.
Three shocking sights… A news anchor, Nikolai with his hand wrapped around an unknown rich-looking lady, and the paparazzi going crazy as the two smashed their lips together and shared an intense kiss.
